The Catholic Normal School of the Holy Family, in St. Francis, Wisconsin, was the first Catholic normal school in the United States! Founded in 1871 by Rev. Dr. Josef Salzmann of Münzbach, Austria, the normal school was the result of a donation from King Ludwig I of Bavaria and served to educate Catholic parochial school teachers. The Catholic Normal School offered a three year curriculum for common schools and a five year curriculum for advanced higher schools. In 1872, Pio Nono College, named for Pope Pius IX, was founded as a business college and shared a building with the Catholic Normal School. Both schools featured a core set of classes in languages, mathematics, history, and religion. In 1873, Johann Baptist Singenberger of St. Gall, Switzerland, arrived in order to serve as the head of the music program. Because school teachers often served as the organist or choirmaster, music became the focus of the school. On average, the schools enrolled 90 students. In 1876, the Catholic Deaf and Dumb Asylum was founded, with students taking classes on a the second floor of the Pio Nono gymnasium. In 1879, the asylum moved to a separate building and in 1889 it was renamed St. John’s Institute for Deaf Mutes and became coeducational. In 1895, the institute separated from Pio Nono college and became independent. In 1923, Catholic Normal School of the Holy Family and Pio Nono College closed. The facility was turned into a Catholic high school which continued to operate under the name of Pio Nono College. Salzmann Hall was built in 1931 to house the boarding students. In 1941 the high school was closed and the building became the home of St. Francis Minor Seminary, which consisted of four years of high school and two years of college. The minor seminary closed when St. Francis de Sales Prepatory Seminary was opened in 1963. In 1965, Rev. Edmund Olley reopened Pio Nono as a high school and its first freshman class of 100 were enrolled, graduating in 1969. Pope Pius IX truly did amazing things for our Church. During his papacy, he defined the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception, called Vatican Council I, proclaimed St. Joseph Patron of the Universal Church and consecrated the Church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. ⁠ ⁠ He also supported and guided Don Bosco as he formed the Salesian Congregation (and suggested calling it a Society). Indeed, when Don Bosco and Pope Pius IX first met, they each felt they had encountered a Saint. St. Hilary was born in the early 4th century and elected bishop of Potiers, France around the year 353 AD, and became the leading and most respected Latin theologian of his age. Seeking to immunize the church against the infection of the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ, he wrote an extensive treatise "On the Trinity" which is perhaps his most famous work. For his trouble, he was exiled by the Emperor, an Arian sympathizer. St. Hilary died in 367 and was proclaimed a "Doctor of the Church" fifteen centuries later by Pope Pius IX. (vaticansite.com 1/13/17) Like most of the Early Church Fathers, St. Hilary had a great devotion and theological understanding to the Blessed Virgin Mary. For Hilary, the reason he saw Mary as the great Mother of Our Lord and the most dominant religious figure in the early Church was because of her glorious virginity. He believed that Mary’s role in Salvation History was unique to her, but always subordinate to the role of Jesus Christ. However, for Hilary, Mary’s role is supremely important for she appears with Christ in the prophesies that speak of the coming of the Messiah in the Old Testament scriptures. In 1854, however, after centuries of theological theories and debates, Pope Pius IX issued the bull Ineffabilis Deus which definitively sanctioned the "Immaculate Conception" of Mary. With this official communication it was therefore established that the Mother of Jesus was not only born absolutely pure, but was conceived in the womb without original sin ( and therefore "Immaculate", without stains). From a man who was little known except for those in a few communities he founded, within a few decades of his death various stories of Paul the Apostle became known to many in the second century in some ways that made him out to be almost larger than life. That’s how he looks as he stands outside the Vatican as a 18-foot-tall Paul. Pope Pius IX (1848) replaced a smaller statue of Paul with this gigantic Paul. While he reads a book, he also holds a sword in his right hand. Why the sword? It’s because tradition has it that he was beheaded. Supposedly he was a citizen and that meant he couldn’t be crucified as was Peter. We cannot prove either died that way, but it’s part of the tradition of the church. #onthisdayinhistory The Capture of Rome (La presa di Roma) September 20, 1870 By the mid-19th century, Italy was a patchwork of states, some of which were under foreign control. Among the most significant of these was the Papal States, which included the city of Rome. The Papal States were directly governed by the Pope, and they presented a significant obstacle to the dream of a united Italy. French troops stationed in Rome were protecting the Papal States. However, the eruption of the Franco-Prussian War in July 1870 shifted France's priorities. Napoleon III needed to recall his troops to defend France against the advancing Prussian army. By August, the last of the French troops had left Rome, leaving the Papal States vulnerable. The Italian government, led by King Victor Emmanuel II, saw the withdrawal of French troops as an opportune moment to annex Rome. On September 11, 1870, Italian troops positioned themselves near Rome. Their objective was to enter the city with minimal bloodshed. On September 20, after some initial bombardment and skirmishes, the Italian army breached the Aurelian Walls at Porta Pia. The breach was led by Bersaglieri troops, and they encountered only token resistance from the papal defenders. Pope Pius IX ordered the defenders to stand down to avoid unnecessary bloodshed. The papal army surrendered, and the Italian army entered the city. The papal army was disbanded, with only the Swiss guard allowed to remain. On October 2, a plebiscite was held to determine the will of the Roman people, overwhelmingly in favor of the annexation to Italy. Rome was declared the capital of the Kingdom of Italy on July 1, 1871, although the transfer of the government from Florence took a bit longer. While the military action on September 20, 1870, was relatively swift and resulted in minimal casualties, the political and religious repercussions of the annexation were significant and long-lasting. This was the final step in the “Risorgimento,” the unification of Italy begun in 1861. Continued in comments...

These 10 Soldi (50 Centesimi) from the Papal States were only minted in 1866-1868 during the reign of Pius IX. All were minted in Rome out of 83.5% pure silver. Pius IX is on the obverse surrounded by the abridged Latin "PIVS·IX·PON· MAX" meaning"Pius IX, Great Bishop" plus the word "a" and the Roman numeral referring to the year of his papacy. (There's another variation minted in 1868 and 1869 with slightly different wording.) The reverse has the denomination and year within a wreath and a small R for the Rome mint mark at the bottom. Above are the words "Papal States" and has a 50 and a Cm at the bottom split on both sides also for the denomination. The first one is from 1866 with the Roman numeral XXI on the obverse referring to the 21st year of his papacy with 291,916 minted. The next two are from 1867 with the first also having the Roman numeral XXI with and the last having XXII with what I believe 4,402,082 minted of between both variations. The Column of the Immaculate Conception is a nineteenth-century monument depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is located in what in Piazza Mignanelli. Designed by architect Luigi Poletti, and commissioned by Ferdinand II, King of the Two Sicilies. The column was dedicated in December 1857, celebrating the recently adopted dogma of the Immaculate Conception of 1854 by #PopePiusIX. The actual structure is a square marble base with statues of biblical figures at the corners that uphold a column of Cipollino marble of 11.8 meters. These 1/2 Soldo (or 2 1/2 Centesimi) from the Papal States were minted in 1866 and 1867. The obverse has Pope Pius IX with the words "Pius IX, Great Bishop" plus the word "ann" and a Roman numeral referring to the year of his papacy. The reverse has the denomination in numerical form and a small R mint mark within a circle. Above is the words for "Papal States" and the denomination is written out at the bottom. Only minted in Rome, this one is from 1866 with the Roman numeral XXI on the obverse (1867 had XXI and XXII). There were two variations of the 1865 20 Baiocchi from the Papal States during the papacy of Pius IX, and look virtually identical except for two differences. Their obverse has Pius IX surrounded by the words "Pius IX, Greatest Bishop" followed by an "a" or "an" plus a Roman numeral referring to the year of his papacy. The reverse has the denomination and date within a wreath, with the R mint mark for Rome or B for Bologna underneath. The first variation was minted from 1858-1865, and the second was minted in 1865 and 1866 (and only in Rome) . The way to identify what variation it is by measuring the diameter, the first one is 24 millimeters, and the second is 24.5 millimeters. If the diameter is 24 millimeters, it's made of 80% silver, but if it's 24.5 it is made of 24.5% silver. In 1858, there were three variations of the 20 Baiocchi from the Papal States. All three have an image of Pope Pius IX with the words surrounding him translating as 'Pius IX, Greatest Bishop" plus an "a" or "an" plus a Roman numeral for the year of his papacy. And the reverse all have the denomination and year within a wreath. The first variation has dots between the words on the obverse and an open wreath with the mint mark below, which is not the type of this one. The other two variations look identical without dots between the words on the obverse, and with the mint mark within a closed wreath on the reverse. The only difference is whether it's made of 80% or 90% silver, and both appear to be minted in Rome (R) and Bologna (B), so I'm not sure what one it is. There were two variations from both mints in 1850 and 1851 with a different Roman numeral, either IV or V for the fourth or fifth year of Pius IX's papacy. This one is from 1850 from Rome with V as the Roman numeral. The important paintings by Podesti owned by the museum, including the beautiful portrait in this post, show the quality of the painter, who looks good in comparison with important contemporary masters such as Hayez or Molteni, among the most important portrait and historical scenes painters in Italy in the XIX century. Podesti was awarded important commissions by the royal court in Turin and the aristocracy and the papal court in Rome, where he died in 1895, 95 years old, a survivor of a disappeared art age. . . . Gabriele Ferretti, coming from a noble family from Ancona, had a lightning career during the papacies of Leo XII and Gregory XVI, as a diplomat and as a bishop and was created Cardinal when he was 43. . . . He was appointed Secretary of State by a Pius IX, a distant relative, but few months later he was demoted and spent the rest of his life in lesser Curial positions. . . . The dogma of the Immaculate Conception, defined by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854, states that: “The Most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first instant of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race,  preserved exempt from all stain of original sin” (Ineffabilis Deus). For us as members of the Catholic faith, the Immaculate Conception is not just significant, it is essential. Because of the grace of God, Mary was preserved from sin. Because Mary was preserved from sin, she was prepared to become the sinless Mother of Jesus, who by his life, death and resurrection, has ransomed us from sin. Because of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, because of her “yes” to God, we have been redeemed, and given the promise of eternal life through the merits of Mary’s Son, Jesus.
