Her gaze says to me, ‘I am powerful, beautiful, and strong…do not mess with me.’ I incorporated flowers from a dress she was wearing in another photo (she made the dress as she had a dress-making business in Jamaica, Queens). Making this painting changed the inner dialogue I have about my mother; Pearl was a woman who had a life, she met a guy, fell in love, had three kids and then got sick and died at 47-years-old. I think of how hard that must have been for her. I want to celebrate and honor her for bringing me into this life.” - June Kosloff @jkosart RECIPES FOR LIFE: THE LUCKY BUBBY COOKBOOK By June Kosloff (Queens, NY) OPENING: 5-9pm, Sat, May 4, 2024 + FREE WORKSHOP: 4:30pm, Sat, May 4, 2024 Through May 25 Gallery Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #multimediaartist #streetart #artworkshop #art #installationart #painting #mixedmediaart #artexhibition #tulsa #oklahoma #positivespacetulsa

Despite being a happy kid in many ways, my young life was also filled with hardship that I could not avoid, as my mother died in 1978…she slowly died over a period of about five years. My family lived with a dark cloud and, yet, I felt love in my home (my parents were genuinely happy, loved each other and all of us kids). In this painting I wanted to look at the JOY I had in my childhood; it includes images of things that brought me joy: a basketball, a tennis ball, a skateboard, my dog Charlie who saved my life once, trees that I climbed, my Uncle’s 1960’s VW camper van, the duplex buildings I lived in, and my favorite Pumas.” - June Kosloff @jkosart Image 1: “Feel the Love #1” (detail) Acrylic on canvas RECIPES FOR LIFE: THE LUCKY BUBBY COOKBOOK By June Kosloff (Queens, NY) OPENING: 5-9pm, Sat, May 4, 2024 + FREE WORKSHOP: 4:30pm, Sat, May 4, 2024 Through May 25 Gallery Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #multimediaartist #streetart #artworkshop #art #installationart #painting #mixedmediaart #artexhibition #tulsa #oklahoma #positivespacetulsa

She works with methods of image manipulation, using typographic and calligraphic elements to create colorful, abstract paintings. May graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2008. While there, she interned for Dolphin Press & Print, the school's print workshop, where she assisted in printing editions for Jon Rappleye, Jane Kent and Faith Ringgold. Continuing her interest in collaborative printmaking, May attended the Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Albuquerque, NM and earned her Professional Printer’s Certificate. SOLITARY SIGNALS by May Yang. THIS WEEK: TH 6-8 + FR 5-9 + SAT 12-5. Following a long hiatus from creating personal work, May fell in love with painting murals and found it to be a gateway to developing a creative practice again. Last August, May created a mural for Illuminate Arts Festival: “Really happy with how this one came out. First time I’ve ever traced a mural with carbon paper (quicker than expected) and it went very smoothly, despite the prep taking forever. I have a hard time picking out colors of the same hue in latex paints and ended up having to run home for a different orange to make the overlapping areas feel like they worked. I think it was worth it though!” - May Yang @electrofervor Find these orange hues, too, in one of May’s paintings, “Dip Your Toe In,” part of her new body of work on view. SOLITARY SIGNALS by May Yang. OPEN TODAY: SAT 12-5. “I previously studied as a designer, a profession purported to effectively and efficiently convey information. I utilize this to call the viewer’s attention to the visual hierarchy of each piece–the constructed nature of all our communication, visual or otherwise. Color and compositional choices come from an intuitive place but are carefully scrutinized before paint is applied to panel. Viewers are invited into the world of each piece–a snapshot of human connection, embraced in its untidiness.” - May Yang @electrofervor Image 1: “Someone Something” 2024 (detail) Acrylic on panel 20 in x 20 in $925, Available for purchase SOLITARY SIGNALS by May Yang Through April 27 Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Positive Space Tulsa 1324 East 3rd Street Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #art #contemporaryart #visualart #painting #abstractart #fineart #art #artexhibition #tulsaartist #oklahomaartist #tulsa #oklahoma #positivespacetulsa #mayyang

SOLITARY SIGNALS by May Yang. THIS WEEK: TH 6-8 + FR 5-9 + SAT 12-5. “I dismantle the conversations I experience in my life into the base components of language – words to letters, to characters, magnified to the bowl of an ‘a,’ or the stem of a serif. These pieces are translated into something new and beautiful, making peace with the imprecision of language and the imperfect ways we communicate, instead of being stuck in the exactitude of properly written characters, perfect pronunciation, or syllabic emphasis.” - May Yang @electrofervor Image 1: “Back to Life” 2024 (detail) Acrylic on panel 20 in x 24 in $1115, Available for purchase SOLITARY SIGNALS by May Yang Through April 27 Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Positive Space Tulsa 1324 East 3rd Street Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #art #contemporaryart #visualart #painting #abstractart #fineart #art #artexhibition #tulsaartist #oklahomaartist #tulsa #oklahoma #positivespacetulsa #mayyang

Positive Space Tulsa is excited to announce the 2024 Artist in Residence, June Kosloff (Queens, NY), and exhibition, “Recipes for Life: The Lucky Bubby Cookbook.” During the pandemic, artist June Kosloff shifted her studio painting practice to the streets. UNTOUCHED//UNPLOWED by Rachel Rector continues THIS WEEK: TH 6-8 / FR 5-9 / SAT 12-5! Thank you Artist Rachel Rector and all who joined us on Saturday for the Sun Print and Camera Obscura Workshop! Many beautiful prints were made, along with viewing the wondrous camera obscura demonstration! “Sun prints or cyanotypes use the sun or UV light as our source. The cyanotype is one of the first photographic printing processes that produces blue prints using coated paper and light. The sun essentially ‘paints' your image. A camera obscura is a darkened room with a small hole or lens at one side through which an image is projected onto a wall inside. The camera obscura is the fundamental principle on which all photography is based and is the precursor concept of cameras.” - Rachel Rector @thereisnothere This project is supported by the Artists Creative Fund. @artistscreativefund UNTOUCHED//UNPLOWED by Rachel Rector Through March 30 Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Positive Space Tulsa 1324 East 3rd Street Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #visualart #photography #experimentalart #installationart #experientialart #workshop #art #artexhibition #tulsa #oklahoma #tallgrassprairie #positivespacetulsa

UPCOMING EXHIBITION! SOLITARY SIGNALS, by May Yang. Opening, 5-9PM, THUR, APRIL 4 through APRIL 27. “‘Solitary Signals’ is a body of work that navigates the post-pandemic paradigm shift by exploring the parallels between the solitude borne of Covid and my feelings of isolation as an only child, growing up in-between cultures. Using a visual language built on calligraphic marks and vivid colors, I see these paintings as letters in bottles–broadcast to whomever wants to engage with them.” - May Yang About the Artist: May Yang is a Tulsa-based artist, printer, designer, and business owner. May graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2008. She has participated in several juried and invitational group shows, including IPCNY New Prints, OVAC’s 24 Works on Paper, Momentum Tulsa Spotlight, and was a 2022 OVAC Fellowship Award recipient. May owns Flash Flood Print Studios, Tulsa’s artist-led, community driven print shop. UNTOUCHED//UNPLOWED, by Rachel Rector, OPENING: 5-9pm, Thursday, March 7, with musical performance by Matt Magerkurth (cello/tapes/electronics). @thereisnothere @mattmagerkurth Thank you, Tim Landes + Tulsa People for the beautiful and thoughtful interview featuring artist Rachel Rector and her exhibit UNTOUCHED//UNPLOWED! @timlandesjr @tulsapeople Link in bio! “I’m a visual artist, but the photography is my roots. Even the show coming up, half of it is using materials from the land or plant matter, not my actual photography, which is odd. So like, say the tree cyanotype, or I'm printing black and white darkroom images on stone, say limestone and sandstone, which is what still protects our prairie and why we have it here in Pawhuska. So that was why I call this 'Untouched//Unplowed' is because that's the big factor of why we can enjoy it. People who are from here, or maybe not, they know they feel that specialness when they're out there.” - Rachel Rector This project is supported by the Artists Creative Fund. @artistscreativefund UNTOUCHED//UNPLOWED by Rachel Rector OPENING: 5-9pm, Thursday, March 7 Through March 30 Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Positive Space Tulsa 1324 East 3rd Street Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #visualart #photography #experimentalart #installationart #experientialart #workshop #art #artexhibition #tulsa #oklahoma #tallgrassprairie #positivespacetulsa

UNTOUCHED//UNPLOWED, by Rachel Rector, OPENING: 5-9pm, Thursday, March 7, with musical performance by Matt Magerkurth (cello/tapes/electronics). @thereisnothere @mattmagerkurth ABOUT THE EXHIBIT: Originally the ocean, the treasured tallgrass prairie retains wave-like topographical reliefs and rocky, mineral-covered ground - primarily made of limestone and sandstone. These minerals have helped to support its own preservation by saving it from agricultural use and development. However, even despite the inability to farm this land, only 11,000 acres of the original 170,000,000 acres of grassland prairie remain. The beauty and softness of Rector’s work illustrate the diverse ecosystem and call for a sense of urgency to protect what we are so fortunate to live amongst. UPCOMING EXHIBITION! OPENING IN TWO WEEKS! 5-9pm, Thursday, March 7, UNTOUCHED//UNPLOWED, by Rachel Rector, with musical performance by Matt Magerkurth (cello/tapes/electronics). @thereisnothere @mattmagerkurth Rachel Rector’s UNTOUCHED//UNPLOWED transports viewers to the sacred hills of the prairie in Pawhuska, OK and implores them to experience and address the relationship between the land and civilization. The viewer is guided gently into a new relationship with the prairie, all the senses engaged, through a story ending with the present: what can we do to sustain these spaces? Using the sun to create large scale cyanotypes and lumen prints on textile and found objects, such as darkroom emulsion rock sculptures, mud prints, photo tapestries, to-scale cyanotypes, along with 16mm video installations, the ethereal nature of her pieces allows for the captured flora and landscape to envelop the viewer. This project is supported by the Artists Creative Fund. @artistscreativefund About the Artist: Rachel Rector is a fine art film photographer whose work utilizes experimental film, camera-less photography, and historical printmaking. Rector has spent over a decade documenting the rare section of the tallgrass prairie that stretches across Oklahoma and Kansas. With a strong belief that we are defined by our landscape, she has created artwork inspired by and physically using parts of this resilient swath of land. LAST WEEK to view “What is Spurious is Also Precious,” by Malinda Blank + Sara Smallhouse! OPEN TH 6-8 / FR 5-9 / SAT 12-5! Thank you, Root Tulsa, for the review and inclusion in your email newsletter! @blankcanvascraft @sarasmallhouse “The largest work in the exhibition (and the one that gives its name to the show) is a photo collage seen at the back of the space. It’s a monumental gathering of photographs, a mix of family photos and found images tightly arranged into a large wall piece. The piece recalls the work one engages in when remembering or misremembering family events, members, or stories. In experiencing this work, I found myself looking for relationships, searching for children that have aged, grandparents in their youth, and trying to identify the strangers or outliers among them. Memory is at once automatic and created—and, like this work and others in the exhibition, a piece or performance that we can decide to participate in.” - Cassidy Petrazzi, Root Tulsa @cassidypetrazzi @roottulsa “What is Spurious is Also Precious,” by Malinda Blank + Sara Smallhouse Through February 24 Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Positive Space Tulsa 1324 East 3rd Street Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #archivist #collaborativeart #museumstudies #arthistory #arteducation #curator #socialpractice #workshop #artiststalk #art #artexhibition #positivespacetulsa

OPEN FR 5-9 + SAT 12-5! Experience “flipping the usual relationship between artist and curator,” in “What is Spurious is Also Precious,” by Malinda Blank + Sara Smallhouse! @blankcanvascraft @sarasmallhouse “The label for ‘Will You Still Love Us?’ (2023) reads as follows: ‘Stepping into this draped textile confronts its materiality. Not performing as a rug, blanket, or garment, the yarn occupies open-air space at eye level…. One is invited to walk inside this organic structure.’ Blank envisioned this set of instructions as an open network of netted and draped pieces of yarn, which she stitched together and unified with a crimson rope. The work, hung from above, rests at eye level and invites the viewer into the spatial arrangement, with the words ‘Will you still love us when we are broken’ knitted into a wall hanging on one side.” - Cassidy Petrazzi @cassidypetrazzi @independentreviewcrew Full article: Link in bio “What is Spurious is Also Precious,” by Malinda Blank + Sara Smallhouse Through February 24 Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Positive Space Tulsa 1324 East 3rd Street Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #archivist #collaborativeart #museumstudies #arthistory #arteducation #curator #socialpractice #workshop #artiststalk #art #artexhibition #positivespacetulsa

Check out the full article (LINK IN BIO) and come through this week: TH 6-8 / FR 5-9 / SAT 12-5! @roottulsa @independentreviewcrew “Ultimately, the position Blank and Smallhouse put the viewer in is that of a spurious interloper. Challenging the traditional roles of artist, curator, and viewer, they invite us to touch, make, and become part of their work. What might be considered spurious or inauthentic art-making because of its co-authored nature is instead seen as precious, valuable, welcomed.” - Cassidy Petrazzi @cassidypetrazzi “What is Spurious is Also Precious,” by Malinda Blank + Sara Smallhouse @blankcanvascraft @sarasmallhouse Through February 24 Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Positive Space Tulsa 1324 East 3rd Street Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #archivist #collaborativeart #museumstudies #arthistory #arteducation #curator #socialpractice #workshop #artiststalk #art #artexhibition #positivespacetulsa

Last week to view “Invisible Voices,” by Amy Sanders de Melo! Open TH 6-8pm, FR 5-9pm + SAT 12-5pm. Enjoy Part 2 of this beautiful series of artist Amy Sanders de Melo by the very talented photographer @streetjuicefilm. “One of my long held dreams had been to handwrite long passages of Braille on really large vessels. Writing Braille on clay requires patience, clear eyes, and a fresh, steady hand. Sometimes when I’m done writing on the raw clay, it doesn’t look quite right so I wipe it all away and start over. I then go back over all the Braille with gold several days or weeks later, rewriting and reciting the words as I go. It’s a ritual I clearly enjoy, otherwise I would not do it, but my hands and eyes tire after long stretches of doing this. “This particular collection would not have been possible without hiring an assistant. Joseph Clayton, an 18-year-old Native potter at my community studio, worked off sketches I drew and threw the larger vessels. I had never had assistance before, so I was nervous about this move, but my hands were taking longer and longer to recover from overuse last fall. For Invisible Voices, this collaboration allowed me to spend long, uninterrupted time with each writers’ words. to give my hands and eyes time to rest and recover between writing sessions, and to dedicate more time to the surface design and glazing of each piece. Watching each pot evolve from beginning to end, with its own unique set of qualities, was super special. “If you’d like to support a young potter with a lot of heart for clay, you can follow Joseph’s work on @pantherpotsby_joseph . There is a long held tradition in the art world that assistants and apprentices are usually not credited for their work, which seems strange to me. In the case of “Invisible Voices,” it would not be what it is without others’ contributions. And thanks to funding from @artistscreativefund , all creatives involved were compensated and credited as they wished.” - @amysandersdemelo Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley #womxnartists #interdisciplinaryartist #ceramicart #installationart #art #artexhibition #tulsa #oklahoma #positivespacetulsa #artistscreativefund

Thank you, Alicia Chesser of Root Tulsa and Independent Review Crew, for the thoughtful review of our current exhibition, “Invisible Voices,” by Amy Sanders de Melo. You captured your experience of viewing Amy’s work so perfectly and beautifully. Links in bio for full review. @roottulsa @independentreviewcrew “A voice is, by its nature, invisible. In these vessels — ranging from cups you can hold between your fingers to pieces you could barely wrap your arms around — voices become tangible as the artist renders experiences that are too seldom heard into objects with weight, volume, and physical presence. Each one is unique, just like the stories that inspire them (and like the viewers whose faces, each bearing their own story, bent over them on opening night). Far from producing an experience of sameness, the repetition of similar forms throughout the show allows the fine differences in each piece to ring out.” - Alicia Chesser @alunadances Come through this week to experience Amy’s work for yourself. We are open this evening, Thursday, 6-8pm; Friday, 5-9pm; and Saturday, 12-5pm. “Invisible Voices,” by Amy Sanders de Melo @amysandersdemelo Through January 27 This project is supported by the Artists Creative Fund. @artistscreativefund Hours: THURS 6-8pm FRI 5-9pm SAT 12-5pm + BY APPT Positive Space Tulsa 1324 East 3rd Street Contact: Nicole Finley @nic_finley [email protected] #womxnartists #interdisciplinaryartist #ceramicart #installationart #art #artexhibition #tulsa #oklahoma #positivespacetulsa #artistscreativefund

We at Four Mothers Collective invite you to check out "SURVIVED BY________" at @positivespace_tul before it closes on November 4th! Hi there. This is Ida with Four Mothers Collective. There are not enough words to express our gratitude for Positive Space Tulsa and Nicole Finley. Without their support, this dream would not have come to fruition. We applaud and appreciate their support of indigenous art. Carly Treece (@tvlse_studios) and Jessie Haase (@pablo.jess.cobar) put all their hearts (and lots of sweat) into this and it SHOWS! They conceived the idea for "SURVIVED BY________" a little over a year ago. So many beautiful and touching pieces from so many talented artists. They worked long and hard to curate the show and bring their vision to life. To say we are proud of them is an UNDERSTATEMENT! PLEASE continue to share the video made by the wonderful @miaknightphotography so we can find justice for Emily Morgan and Totinika Elix. You can find the video on Facebook. Many thanks to @therealclairecollins for hosting our Spoken Word + Open Mic night. The laughter, tears, and community were a much-needed release after a difficult October. We are pleased to announce that we will be presenting another collective show November 2024 at Positive Space Tulsa! If you or anyone you know would be interested in co-curating, please email your artist CV (and/or any questions) to [email protected].
