I’ve procrastinated posting this as I found it difficult getting images that showed off the eye and the detail of the piece at the same time. Anyway, here we are. This piece is modeled on a Korimako/Bellbird and is made from one of my favorite and more difficult stones to work. The pounamu is reef stone which is prone to being schostose. This means you have to be very gentle carving it as too much vibration can cause delamination. At first, I was tempted to hide it...but then I realized that this flaw tells a story. It's a reminder that we don't have to be perfect to be beautiful. I gave this hei tiki the name "Whakairia," a Māori word meaning "to be adorned or ornamented." The flaw becomes a unique detail, a mark of its journey. Just like our own flaws make us who we are.
