MACHINES, MUSIC, MIRRORS I used to work as a gym manager and PT many years back, I have spent many hours training myself and others within gyms. The other day I found a gym in London to while a way a couple of child free hours. I now train mainly outside, so going back into a gym environment was quite surreal. Thankfully gyms have slightly progressed. They used to be jam packed with resistance machines (many useless) with a teeny ‘stretching’ area. Now there is lots more space dedicated to moving more like an actual human, rather than a robot. Still lots of mirrors, random loud music and motivational quotes on walls. And guy’s dribbling at the size of each other’s muscles. The gym culture will never really change. I’m not against gyms. They are a great place to train. But should not be your only space of practice. It’s a space with machines, mats, music and mirrors. However much you adapt it. It’s still a space with machines, mats, music and mirrors. So it will always have its typical motivations but it also continues to have its many limitations. But, much better to be moving in them, than not moving at all. I still prefer training in my garden and on the beach. But that’s me. I’m older. And my body is wiser. Just keep moving.
