Our final staff profile for the year is Elaine, PSC’s program manager. Elaine oversees the PSC offices and keeps things rolling administratively so that the team can do its important work. Q: What’s your favorite thing about working for PSC? A: I love meeting people with different life experiences and seeing how our program helps them meet their goals. Last year, PSC served learners who spoke 36 different first languages. How incredible is that? I also love it when I get to personally tutor a learner, which I’m doing right now. Q: What did you do before you worked at PSC? A :I worked as a middle school English teacher, a nonprofit program director, and a higher ed administrator. My first “real” job ever was as a Blockbuster Video clerk - a fun way to view the latest movies as a teen. Q: What’s your favorite CCCL resource that people may not know about? A: Libby is a popular resource, but I think that it should even be more popular! The Library has expanded its collection of e-books and audiobooks significantly over the past few years. While I still have a soft spot for printed books, I appreciate the easy access to books and user-friendly experience that Libby offers. Q: What are you looking forward to in 2024? A: Professionally, PSC’s year of 40th anniversary celebrations. Our next featured staff member is Leslie, our passionate East County tutor-learner coordinator! Leslie has been serving pairs in Antioch and Brentwood for over five years. Q: What’s your favorite thing about working for PSC? A: Making connections between people, especially when volunteers and adult learners are hitting it off and learning from one another. When I witness or learn about this, I feel gratitude and excitement to be doing what I am doing! Q: What’s one PSC story that stands out to you? A: We had a learner who could not pass a job promotion test for a big-box retail store because of his struggles with writing. With the help of tutors, he got a better job more aligned with his interests, and his employer paid his fees and sent him to DVC! Q: What’s your favorite holiday tradition? A: Each Christmas season, my husband and I watch "The Family Man," a movie about a single, wealthy Wall Street businessman (Nicolas Cage), who wakes up on Christmas morning a completely different person (a suburban dad, married to Tea Leoni). My husband and I order the same kind of pizza and recite all of the funny lines -- most of them supplied by Don Cheadle! Q: What’s your favorite book or story? A: For 2023, I am on track to reading 27 books! Right now, I am reading "Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival and Hope in an American City." It is a really tough subject, but I can't put it down. When we rescue dogs off the streets of Puerto Rico, from high kill shelters, or take in dogs in dire need of medical treatments, we invest extensive time, resources, and funds to get each dog ready and healthy for adoption.
