Meet Izzy! Izzy was born and raised in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. She grew up with an immense passion for wildlife and exploring the outdoors, which led to her pursuing a B.S. in Environmental Science with a minor in Film from Allegheny College. After she graduated in 2022, she found herself in South Carolina working as an Environmental Educator. Between jobs, she traveled to the Glacier National Park for the first time, where she discovered nature at its finest. Izzy is so excited to have joined the Glacier Institute team to discover further what Glacier offers and allow people to connect to the outdoors on a deeper level. Took these two lads rock climbing in the Peak District today. Absolutely AMAZING. Following an introductory session bouldering I threw them straight on a 22m Severe, followed by the adjacent VS4c, and before the day was out they even cruised up a 5a slab. Rock pool time Took the kids to some rock pools to get some ideas for my personal study project. As expected we found loads of Common Limpets (Patella vulgata) and Periwinkle's (Littorina sp.). Beautiful day, fab company and a great track - perfect school holiday entertainment ð Lookout Track | Maukatere (Mt Grey) | 8km rtn | 500m elev Loved this route up to the summit of Maukatere - more kid-friendly than the main track and more interesting (I thought anyway) ð Starting out at Lake Janet, the track winds its way up through forest and scrub before popping out at the old fire lookout. Here youâre treated to views right across the Canterbury plains and foothills and we had fun trying to pick out the other foothill mountains of Oxford, Thomas and Richardson. After parking along the side of the road, there is a short walk down a marked path. There was a rocky descent but it was nothing our little ones couldnât handle! The fourth cultural shiftððœððœððœ Increased academic pressure. These four things combined have created a pressure cooker for our kids. ð° (Share this with another mom!) Small children have developmentally inappropriate expectations to sit still and be quiet for long periods of time. Theyâre expected to learn things quickly, often before theyâre brains are ready. ð§ And then they donât have the safety net of processing these stressors through independent and risky play, and time outdoors. ð³ Weâre not serving our children here. Weâre serving them up. On a platter. ðœïž As a society, I think itâs time we changed how we view childhood. Itâs not a crash course into adulthood. Because while kids are tiny humans, they are not tiny adults. So what can we do? We can prioritize time outside. At the playground, on the trails, in the snow, at the basketball court. On the weekends and after school if theyâre gone most of the day. ð We can support independent play. We can let them take risks while we watch, ready if needed, but not hovering with fear. We can provide spaces and time where that kind of activity is protected. ð» We can give them time to decompress after school instead of asking them 20 questions. We can advocate for reasonable loads. And we can stop participating in the insane rat race of preschool prep. ðŽïž And if you want lots of tips for doing all those things in a way that is simple, and actually takes the pressure OFF YOU TOO, follow along because I have lots! I know I donât have the capacity to set the tone for cultural expectations. But I set the tone for my house. And in my house, we protect childhood just as fiercely as we protect their physical lives. âïž If youâre worried about the epidemic of mental health issues, I want to encourage you. With the weather starting to warm up weâre starting our summer prep series!!!!! So hereâs a post you can save on bug spray! This one certainly took a little bit of elbow grease to put together ð ... insect repellents are regulated like pesticides (not cosmetic products) which means that only active ingredients need to be disclosed. Some companies are willingly transparent if you contact them asking for an ingredient breakdown, and others not so much. â â â â â â â â â But much to my surprise the OFF brand was one of the only ones that transparently discloses all ingredients in their products online. And they have a fantastic products that make the top of my list. But please note I am *only* recommending the specific product image you see in these graphics. I do not stand behind all variations from each of these brands. The OFF aerosols all contain butane / isobutane / propane propellants. So make sure you choose the manual spray pumps. â â â â â â â â â I also want to stress there is no one âbestâ bug spray. Itâs highly dependent on the risk in your area, how long youâre going to be outside, the % of active ingredient you need etc. Checkout the information on the CDC and EPA websites to learn more.
