WHITNEY BIENNIAL 2024: EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING “Society is at an inflection point . . . in part brought on by artificial intelligence challenging what we consider to be real, as well as critical discussions about identity,” said the curators in a joint statement. “Many of the artists presenting works—including via robust performance and film programs—explore the fluidity of identity and form, historical and current land stewardship, and concepts of embodiment, among other urgent throughlines, and we are inspired by the work they are creating and sharing.” The 2024 Whitney Biennial is organized by Chrissie Iles, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator and Meg Onli, Curator at Large, with Min Sun Jeon and Beatriz Cifuentes. The performance program is organized by Iles and Onli, with guest curator Taja Cheek. Congratulations P STAFF part of Whitney Biennal 2024 with : “Afferent Nerves” and “A Travers Le Mal”, 2023 The 2024 Whitney Biennial is organized by Chrissie Iles, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator and Meg Onli, Curator at Large, with Min Sun Jeon and Beatriz Cifuentes. Early in their career as an artist, P. Staff worked as a choreographer. A sense of live encounter remains important in the work on view, as does the idea of experiencing a work of art with the whole body. Their installation’s title, Afferent Nerves, refers to the nerve fibers that channel sensory information from the outside world into the brain, bringing touch, temperature, and pain to the central nervous system— an idea that reimagines the gallery as a kind of body, permeated here by a sense of danger. Staff bathes the installation in an acidic yellow light. A live electrical net hangs above the gallery, out of reach but audibly buzzing, suggesting the possibility of a physical shock. A photographic self- portrait of the artist on the far wall shows their hands covering their face in a gesture suggestive of suffering or retreat. Staff has described the aesthetic of their work as relating to “a particular trans mode of being that exists in the tension between dissociation and hypervigilance.” #whitneybiennal #Pstaff #whitneymuseumofart

🩶 The group exhibition Bliss, bliss, bliss is guided by the theme of such bizarre laughter. Against the backdrop of an increase in apocalyptic scenarios, the persistence of wars and terror as well as an unimpeded climate crisis that is only escalating further, the show examines conscious and unconscious coping mechanisms of the mind. Congratulations P STAFF selected for the Whitney Biennial 2024. « Even better than the real thing » After finalizing the list of artists last summer, we have built a thematic Biennial that focuses on the ideas of “the real.” Society is at an inflection point around this notion, in part brought on by artificial intelligence challenging what we consider to be real, as well as critical discussions about identity. Many of the artists presenting works—including via robust performance and film programs—explore the fluidity of identity and form, historical and current land stewardship, and concepts of embodiment, among other urgent throughlines, and we are inspired by the work they are creating and sharing.  Organized by Chrissie Iles, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator and Meg Onli, Curator at Large, with Min Sun Jeon and Beatriz Cifuentes. P. Staff - Impact Play, 2023 (Courtesy of the artist and Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona. A visual artist, performer and poet, P. Staff use violence, identity, and contradiction as catalysts for creating work from a place of power. In their work, Staff trains a critical lens on the ways gender and identity are constructed and depicted in society. ‘For me it always comes back to this feeling that the body is a flashpoint, a crisis point,’ they say. ‘It’s a nexus of politics, the law, intimacy, and sensation’. In Impact Play, P. Staff establishes a parallel between some of the visual resources of the structural cinema - an experimental movement from the 1960s and 1970s that rejected the narrativity and illusionism of conventional filmmaking to focus on the material substratum of the medium per se - and clinical techniques for visualising the body – magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, X-rays. Flashes of colour, words, hand-painted frames and brief shots of asses being spanked set the beat for Impact Play. Burns and stains of colour associated with film as a physical medium therefore appear overlaid on human skin to underscore the permeability of bodies. These visual effects are interrupted by representations of strange physiognomies that spectators can only guess at. Completing all of this is a broken poem naming various parts of the body and forms of bodily contact that speeds up until becoming impossible to read.) #art #artdaily #artlover #contemporaryart #pstaff #britishartist #installationart #videoart #gender #body #lights #cinema #sitespecific #identity #conceptualart #ultrasound #xray #flash #impact #play #skin #visualeffects #fundaciojoanmiro #barcelona #archive #arensbergarchive @p___staff

A Place on Earth Where All Places Are P. Staff exposes at Kunsthalle Basel the true, violent face of the heteronormative| matrix by juxtaposing it with the terrible and sublime encounter with a horror beyond human understanding. Text by Ewa Borysiewicz Exiting the rooms of a "In Ekstase", P. Staff's solo show in Kunsthalle Basel, resembles waking up from a very eerie, but a very specific kind of dream, similar to the one conjured by "Bloodborne's" (2015)¹ – an action role-playing game developed by Hidekata Miyazaki and FromSoftware – main protagonist, the Hunter. "Farewell, good Hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world." With these words, the Doll–the enigmatic NPC aiding the player to advance the, bids goodbye to the character exiting the "Hunter’s Dream", one of the few safe locations in the game. The Hunter, leaving the safe haven hosted by the Doll, aims to progress in the terrifying "waking world", the cursed and desolated city of Yharnam, heavily inspired by both Gothic architecture and the eldritch horror of H. P. Lovecraft's prose. […] Link in bio 🟨 @ewa_borysiewicz @p___staff @kunsthallebasel #pwmagazine #pwmag #pstaff #kunsthallebasel #ewaborysiewicz

Now online: Matthew Lax on P. Staff at Kunsthalle Basel Each room of P. Staff’s exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel showcases new work that unsettles and often physically engages with its visitors – albeit in different ways. One encounters a video installation amplified by means of stroboscopic light; motorized fans, whose rotating blades generate strong airflows whilst producing holographic video-poems; appropriated medical sterilization records; small objects made of congealed blood; as well as a ceiling-mounted structure of electrified cords, typically used to contain livestock. Heterogeneous as this exhibition might seem, “In Ekstase” exposes, as Matthew Lax writes, an underlying theme: these diverse disciplinary structures are a means through which living beings – and especially marginalized communities – are controlled, and which also, in a kind of edgeplay, interrogate residual power, transness, and personal agency. 👉 Link in bio! 📸 “P. Now is your last chance to (re)visit and (re)experience @p___staff ’s electrifying exhibition „In Ekstase“ at Kunsthalle Basel, before it closes its gates this Sunday, September 10. As you progress through the exhibition rooms, you understand that the atmosphere of menace persists, conceptually and intellectually, if not actually. But, make no mistake, the mood of P. Staff’s exhibition is also rapturous – after all, the show’s title announces an ecstatic state – even as it is a cleaving open of pervasive notions of gender, state-sanctioned violence, and the (mortal) body. 📷 Exhibition views by @philipp_haenger Video made by @nefeliavgeris Color grading @taro.tornado #kunsthallebasel #pstaff #lovebasel #museenbasel

@P___Staff for Issue 188, The Eternal Flame Issue! ‘La Nuit Américaine’ is a film essential to P.Staff’s latest exhibition ‘In Ekstase’ that envelops viewers in an aggressive, strobing environment, intensifying the sensory experience and prompting contemplation on discomfort and awareness. Borrowing its title from the French term for simulating the midnight hours with a complex set of lenses and filters, it shows a world enrobed in an endless twilight. On their work, Staff says, “The first patient that gets experimented on is always myself. It’s a feeling that I pull from nightclubs or roller coasters. A moment where you’re kind of like, ‘Oh, shit, we’re all in this’ when you start to become more aware of the other people in the room… that we are all navigating this space together.” Read the full feature on flaunt.com! Featured: P. @P___Staff for Issue 188, The Eternal Flame Issue! On view through September 10, contemporary visual and performance artist P. Staff's ‘In Ekstase’ at @KunsthalleBasel, delves into the connection between physical sensations, emotions, and institutional structures. Through electrified installations, the exhibition explores the thin line between pleasure and pain, life and death. “It’s incredible to think about what is really happening when we’re trying to describe pain, or saying that we’re in pain, or to describe pain to another person,” says Staff. “That pain on one hand can be a set of nerves responding to a stimulus, but can move into the realm of the deeply symbolic or emotional. In the context of the exhibition, that net, which has been named after the afferent neuron, is itself alive and the nervous system is heightened and buzzing.” Read the full feature on flaunt.com! Featured: P. P. Staff draws from a wide-ranging assortment of influences, including necropolitics, affect theory, and transpoetics, as well as their own studies in modern dance, astrology, and end of life care. In Staff’s interdisciplinary practice, these varying threads serve to emphasise the processes by which bodies – especially those of people who are queer, trans, or disabled – are interpreted, regulated, and disciplined in a rigorously controlled society. © P. @p___staff ’s holographic image-poem in the fourth room of their exhibition is equal parts lyrical, sculptural, and filmic. In its spectral presence, the work flirts with a long film tradition: it has the material, flickering quality of early cinema or Structuralist films of the 1960s and ‘70s or even of magic lanterns and optical illusions, while being a decidedly contemporary phantasmagoria. The blades of the holographic fans propel, Staff would tell you, an interrogation of what it is to be living, sensing, delirious, ecstatic, and suffering—in a world on fire. The poem ends with the repeated, halting assertion: “I AM ALIVE” / “YOU ARE DEAD.” Yet the speaker of the statements remains ambiguous: is it the artist addressing themself, the artist addressing the viewer, or the machine addressing the human? 📷 Exhibition views by @philipp_haenger #kunsthallebasel #pstaff #lovebasel #museenbasel

IN EKSTASE by P. STAFF @p___staff at KUNSTHALLE BASEL @kunsthallebasel [from 20230609 to 20230910] A favorable review might call an exhibition “electric.” And this one is. Literally. It pulses with a galvanic charge: an electrical system and network of cords loom above visitors’ heads in the first room, just out of reach. But what if you nevertheless managed to jump up and touch it? The flexible structure’s electrical elements are often deployed to contain live-stock; it is intended to prevent the crossing of a boundary, whether motivated by the will to intrude or flee. To be in contact with the limit it circumscribes is to receive a punishing shock. Applying such a system to the upper perimeter of an institutional exhibition space may be a metaphoric gesture, but the danger is real. As you progress through the exhibition rooms, you understand that the atmosphere of menace persists, conceptually and intellectually, if not actually. But, make no mistake, the mood of P. Staff’s exhibition is also rapturous—after all, the show’s title announces an ecstatic state—even as it is a cleaving open of pervasive notions of gender, state-sanctioned violence, and the (mortal) body. […] It was the Austrian poet and author Ingeborg Bachmann who once wrote: “I am writing with my burnt hand about the nature of fire.” Staff, too, has taken this task to heart. The fires that Staff encounters are the red-hot embers of social and structural violence and ecological disasters that have become our new normal. Staff’s hand may be burnt as they write, film, and build worlds through their art, and yet, unrelentingly, their exhibition invites visitors to step closer to the fire: it burns images on the retina much like those that result from staring too long at the blazing ball of fire and gas that is the sun—gorgeous, but it hurts. “In Ekstase, by British artist P. Staff (*1987), incorporates all new works in video, sculpture, and installation. It draws on persistent concerns of the artist, such as the myriad processes by which the living—especially marginalized communities—are disciplined in a society defined by capitalism and its brutality. Through a weaving of trans poetics, mysticism, and necropolitics, Staff constructs an exhibition at once atmospheric and haunting. To visit it will be to enter a universe. To leave it will be to be transformed by the artist’s urgent reflection on that essential question: how can we define what it is to live, truly live, in a world on fire?” #pstaff @p___staff #inekstase @kunsthallebasel #kunsthallebasel #thepublicbody #lifeinthecolourfield #seenunseen #letthearchitecturespeak #notoneversion #onwhatlieswithin #thresholds #forwardthroughtherearview

‘HHS-687’ - consent form for forced sterilisation etched with acid onto steel as part of @p___staff ‘s electric show ‘In Ekstase’ @kunsthallebasel The consent form reads: I UNDERSTAND THAT THE STERILIZATION MUST BE CONSIDERED PERMAMENT AND NOT REVERSIBLE. I HAVE DECIDED THAT I DO NOT WANT TO BECOME PREGNANT, BEAR CHILDREN OR FATHER CHILDREN. This seemingly mundane paperwork is demonstrable of the biopolitical violence perpetrated against trans people. Many countries, including Greece and Switzerland, require trans people to waive their reproductive rights in order to gain their gender status and receive treatments such as hormone therapy. As the exhibition text explains: [Looking into the mirrored plate] is to encounter the image of yourself reflected on a surface that reprints a standard consent form for human sterilization. Government-mandated or otherwise coerced surgery to remove irreversibly a person's capacity to reproduce is invariably woven into a history of borders, war, disability, and eugenics. The practice stems from so-called "hygiene laws," shockingly still in place as late as 1970 in many countries, including Switzerland. It extends to the more recent and widespread requirement for the sterilization of transgender people as a condition for their obtainment of legal gender recognition. Quietly and devastatingly, the etchings insinuate the ways in which the body's agency and autonomy are officially appropriated and controlled. #pstaff #kunsthallebasel #transrights #reproductiverights #reproductivefreedoms #repronomics
