Today's Artist Spotlight goes to Lisa Mahar and her acrylic on board work entitled "Armadillo Rodeo" inspired by Jan Brett's book of the same name. Lisa said about this work, "I chose Armadillo Rodeo as my inspiration, because of my fascination with the Armadillo’s unique and one of a kind body structure . I loved the story about the little adventurous Bo, who was naive, but also very brave . A delightful tale for all ages." How's this for a big bone? It's Artifact Tuesday! This week we are sharing this incredibly large leg bone that came from either a mammoth or a mastodon. What's the difference? Well mastodons were shorter and stockier, and mammoths had longer trunks. Both animals were incredibly large as seen in the size of just one of their bones that we have here at the Putnam museum. #quadcities #artifact #museum #putnammuseum

Continuing to get to know our hometown and learn more about how we can support local organizations has been my favorite part of putting down roots here in the #quadcities. Over the weekend we joined the @putnammuseum for their yearly gala event and we had such a lovely time. We even got to see the unveiling of an incredibly special piece of art the museum recently discovered in its archives. A magic mirror! Amazing. Dr. King challenged the world to become a place of freedom and justice through nonviolent civil rights activism, and today we honor that memory. In April of 1965, the Davenport Catholic Interracial Council chose Dr. King to receive the Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award. Dr. King came to Davenport to accept the award (pictured here) and made a memorable speech to a crowd of over 800 people, calling for their participation in social action to end racial segregation. This Thursday at our monthly History on Tap lecture, you can hear more about Quad City Civil Rights as Ryan Saddler of St. Ambrose University and Friends of MLK gives a lecture on the history of social justice in the QC! Mother oversees, often exhausted but always lovingly with her watchful eyes....A century after its publication, Bambi strikes me as a very important book for mature readers." Our featured exhibit Tails from Tales: Storybook Beasts features nineteen local artists and their work. Todays Artist Spotlight is Shae Stamler and her work Love is Gold inspired by the book "I'll Love You Forever" by Owen Hart. Shae shared about this work, "I love painting predators, portraying their power and beauty normally. This was a fun opportunity to do the opposite here and convey a softness and warmth that isn't usually shown in polar bears. It's why I also chose to portray the forest scene. I wanted to embrace the colorful world it created and convey the warmth of family." Jason said about this piece, "Mr. Toad and his antics steal the show in Grahame's book. It was something that I vividly remember reading when I was young, and what always comes to mind when I think of it. Capturing Mr. Toad's excitement - and maybe a little danger - was the direction I was going in this piece." Our new featured exhibit Tails from Tales: Storybook Beasts features nineteen artworks done by local artists that are all inspired by storybooks. During the exhibits run, we will be highlighting all of the beautiful works of art that are featured in the exhibit. Our first artist is Abigail Kongkousonh who created this work inspired by Margery Williams Bianco's classic The Velveteen Rabbit. Abigail said about the work, "The Velveteen Rabbit is quite an emotionally complex book for children. At first glace, it is about fluffy toys and love, but there are also strong themes of sickness, mortality and transportation." It's Artifact Tuesday! This week we are highlighting something that is currently on display in Common Ground: Our Voice, Our Stories. These are carved stone Kinnikinnik (tobacco) pipes. Native Americans grew native tobacco to use for ceremonial occasions. Some pipes, like these, were decorated with animal carvings. This likely represented personal or clan totems (spiritual friends). All four of these beautiful pipes can currently be seen on exhibit in the museum! #quadcities #artifact #exhibit #museum #putnammuseum #nativeamerican

This is a special Halloween Edition of Artifact Tuesday! Have you heard of Apple-head dolls? These are dolls that were popular in colonial America. People would make toys out of everyday objects that they had lying around, such as apples. The apple would be peeled and carved to make the head of the doll. But, what happens as time goes on and the apple starts to rot? Well it shrinks and turns black making for a very creepy doll. Mummies! No Halloween season would be complete without at least one mummy. Fortunately for us, Davenport’s Putnam Museum has two. One is still wrapped in original bindings, the other is not. The intact mummy is a male who was specifically purchased for the museum’s collections by Charles E. Ficke, in 1896. He has a lovely coffin, but alas, it is not really his. How did that happen? Ficke’s memoirs related that “the mummies and mummy-cases, when found, are stored in separate rooms at the museum.” When a wealthy purchaser came to call, the staff brought bodies in until they found one that fit the coffin and called it good. The other mummy and her coffin came into hands of B. J. Palmer, after going through a couple private owners. Since Palmer had visited Tut’s tomb, he somehow got the idea that this might be Tut’s sister, Princess Meritaten. But her coffin said otherwise: writing on it alluded to Isis-Neferit, temple chantress. Both mummies went to get CT scans in 2007. Ficke’s mummy is a 45 to 55 years old male, and about 5 foot 5 inches tall. He is not an Egyptian priest, as some had speculated. Palmer’s acquisition is a female, but she is neither Tut’s sister nor Isis Neferit. Younger by several hundred years than her coffin, she was likely a victim of the “if the coffin fits,” approach to mummy sales. Bummer! It would be easy to say that we will never know who the two Putnam mummies are, but never is a long time. As science advances, more and more facts have emerged about each one. Their exhibit and story are very much worth a trip to the Putnam though, no matter how they got there. While you are at it, enjoy the many other fun things they have to offer! #Mummies #PutnamMuseum #Putnam #Museum #oddities #odditiesandcuriosities #traveliowa #iowatravel #roadtrip #roadside #roadsideattraction #iowahistory #visitiowa #travelblogger #getoutside #roadtrip #roadtripusa #roadtripiowa

Calling all August birthdays! Here are 5 fun facts about your birthstone Peridot that you may not have known! 1. The word Peridot comes from the Arabic word "faridot" which translates to gem. 2. Peridot only comes in one color (unlike most precious gems) and can only be in various shades of green. 3. It has been found in meteorite crash sites which means that the gemstone exists in space. 4. In Hawaiian folklore, Peridot was believed to be the tears of Pele, the goddess of the volcano. 5. Peridot is formed in the earth's mantle rather than the crust like most gemstones. Comment 💎 below if this is your birthstone! Pictured are two Peridots that are a part of the Putnam Shorey Gems collection. #artifact #museum #putnammuseum #collection #gem #gemstone #crystal

Some 🏳️‍🌈 joy from this last weekend. I love candid photos of myself and I wish I had more. I get so caught up in my head when taking pictures of myself. I always want to make sure I look "right." So when my friend sent me this picture of myself I was ESTATIC. I look happy. I look GOOD. I'm not focused on how my face is still swollen from my wisdom teeth being removed or the extra fat I picked up working a job where I was essentially sitting most of the day. I was just too estatic for the hands on suctiony wind tunnel thing at the museum. We had such a good time this weekend. It was so nice to get to just be for once. We will be doing a FREE documentary showing THIS SATURDAY (May 20) on the GIANT Screen followed by an exhibit walkthrough and Q&A with Dr. Eriksen. This screening will be included in the general admission price this day ONLY! Come join us and don't miss out on this amazing opportunity to meet a real life adventurer. #documentary #films #documentaryfilm #museum #putnammuseum #ocean #junkraft In 2008, two sailors drifted across the N. Pacific to Hawaii on a raft made from 15,000 plastic bottles tied in old fishing nets stuffed under a Cessna 310 Aircraft. They called it JUNK, and the purpose of the 88 day, 2600 mile voyage was to build awareness and help build a movement to save our seas from plastic pollution. A global grassroots movement has now emerged and is demanding the same things: corporate responsibility for the endgame of what they make. Communities around the world are awash in trash, and are tired of being blamed for it, or expected to pay for cleanup. Zero waste communities are growing around the world, leading the way for a sustainable future. But there's a great divide between how industry sees the future and what the movement demands. This film is not only a story of adventure, but a vision of how we bridge that divide. It's a story about how we save our seas, and ourselves.
