He is lovingly taking care of these trees, mulching and trimming them as needed so we as a community can enjoy the beautiful flowers in the spring and the fruit all summer long. Garden set up! After a few years of experimenting, we just about have the way of raising our most important crops figured out. The timing is still off. A big shout out to Growing with Love for all the great tips and advice as well as 10-07 Farms. Never had more and stronger tomatoes, peppers and melons. The peas and beans are coming up and the lettuce, kale, swiss chard, onions and herbs are off to a great start. Never quit learning! One of the new things we've learned this winter was how to make yogurt ourselves. Some is needed for in our soap and our little dairy had to take a break in making it. Ah! 😱 But the integrity of our product, what now?! Well, turns out the instant pot was able to make it just as good and our yogurt strainer lets us decide if we want iti thicker or thinner. Plus whey! This protein rich byproduct is not our favorite but the dogs and chickens go NUTS over it! Win-win situation just the way we love it. Nothing wasted. Collection time! As every year, we go out about now to collect the goodness that ends up making our products. This is heavenly smelling pine sap. One can make what's called tar salve in Germany which is known to draw out infection and even splinters. It's supposed to help with rheumatism and gout. The essential oils can relieve cough, sore throat, and stuffed noses. Tinctures are used to treat sore throat as well as infections in mouth and esophagus. Smudge sticks are burned to disinfect and sooth cold symptoms. While sap has been chewed by natives and lumber jacks to help with gum diseases and to freshen breath, I wouldn't recommend that. It's unbelievably strong and the essential oils burn badly as concentrated as they are. Experience. 🆕New adventure!🆕 Since we go to two markets that don't sell eggs (yet) we're getting ready to add chickens. 🐥🥚 We decided to go non-gmo and as organic (the #joelsalatin way) as possible. "As possible" because we're new at this and will make mistakes and have losses. The only place that has the feed we want (since the one in Wamego closed) is @perrymillingfeedandsupply in Perry up by Topeka. If you're trying to find a supplier, they have competitive prices, great service and the cutest office aids far and wide. We decided to make it a shampoo bar which is nicer on the skin and can be used on the hair, a one stop shop kinda deal. Then we added propolis since (depending on the season) one can get chewed up by jiggers, mosquitoes, ticks, even wild bees.
