Hospital clinic throws them in the bin 🗑️ Breas Medical (the manufacturers) provide no system for recycling. 🔥 So. It’s down to us. The consumer, as usual. • Can’t refuse or reduce - I’ll die (awks) • Can’t repair - tried tape over split tube and it leaked! • Can’t reuse and regift - (bit gross) So it’s REPURPOSE! The tubes could be used for gardening but my PA is going to see if her school teacher niece can use it in classroom water play. #repurposeideas ... Repurpose cut out material ... Cut out cloth is brand new cloth that is left out after cutting the dress, usually discarded as rag. That could be small strips or bigger pieces. Instead of discarding as rags they could be repurposed into many things! Cotton material is washable, durable, breathable, convenient in all seasons and degrades easily into soil. But, it is a thirsty crop, it grows in warmer climates, needs a lot of water for cultivation, and has a tendency to turn the soil barren. So, wasting even a piece of cotton is unsustainable right?. . At home Mom wears pure cotton gowns. Due to old age her body is shrinking including her height. And so we have to reduce the length of the newly bought gowns to fit her. I used that beautifully printed pure cotton cut out material to stitch tote bags, with good lining and sturdy handles. I love them and carry them everywhere. #repurposeideas ... I repurpose old cotton clothing in place of paper kitchen towels and also for cleaning purposes, especially tshirts and night pyjamas, which can be washed and reused. Is this gyan a new thing? Nope, we all know this hack don't we? The question is not how many know? The question is how many practice? Our mothers did, our grandmothers did. But, we dismissed it by calling it "the Indian middle class"! It is not time consuming at all, everyone has enough time to tear an old robe, or as a whole to use it as a kitchen towel in the place of paper right? At the end of the day just wash it and dry. I tried hard to make the kitchen towels look photoworthy. Hehe, it takes less time to practice zerowaste lifestyle than photographing and documenting the tips and ideas 😁, don't you agree?. . Our decisions are the future of our planet!! Every piece of paper costs the planet trees and precious water. Trees and forests are very important in carbon sequestration. Everything we do in our everyday life has an impact on the environment, starting from the food we eat, the energy/fuel we use and much more. Well, that doesn't mean we always walk or ride a bike, eat raw and grow everything we eat! It just means to use the resources mindfully and minimize the waste. Small changes like reducing use of paper and plastic, turning off electric appliances when not in use instead of putting on standby, fixing leaking taps and toilet flush right away, use alternatives for plastics and papers, minimize the use of single use or disposables so the impact of our living has minimum damage on the environment. Even though we talk so much about reusables, #sustainability, there are times we cannot avoid disposables. They will remain. The best way is to minimize them, only for emergencies. Actually, 'Single use' is a mindset. Most of the plastic items which come home as single-use/disposable/use-and-throw are not of single use quality. They can be reused many times or endlessly in much better ways and that can delay their entry into landfill. This applies to most of the plastic disposables we use in our daily life other than medical waste. I started with, reusing the takeaway food containers. . I am not a big fan of restaurant food. I order from or go to a restaurant when there is no other feasible alternative. A few years ago, my wrist bones were shattered into pieces on Chader trek in Ladakh. When I came back to Bangalore I had to order food to survive for a few days. Then, a couple of years ago, I fell off the bike and broke my knee cap. And so I had to order food because I couldn't cook with the heavy plaster on my limb. A year ago I underwent surgery and I had to order food. Food came in white plastic containers. And I saved those containers which are good for reuse in the kitchen 😀. 🍀 To store leftover salad vegetables in the fridge. 🍀To store dry snacks and also to buy bulk snacks like bhujia sev, masala peanuts, papdi etc from local shops. 🍀To store ingredients like dusting flour for rotis or semi prepared dry masala ingredients. 🍀Sometimes when guests are leaving, I may want to pack some sweets or breakfast or lunch for their travel, and I know my steel dabba will not come back so soon.. 🍀When the containers get too old I am planning to use them to grow microgreens. 🍀I don't use these containers to store leftover food like curry or anything wet/acidic because I worry about leaching chemicals. . Most of them lasted for long, and few are still serving! There could be an endless number of uses. Recycling is the last resort. . Inspired? Share it on your stories to spread the word. Yes, we have to buy some personal hygiene products for my Mother every month in bulk. They come in big packets packaged in double layered sturdy brown paper. Instead of throwing it away I upcycle the paper for many useful items. One of them is an envelope for sending physical documents. Our apartment collects all the dry waste for recycling, but I want to repurpose whatever possible before sending it to recycle. Not burning crackers or burning only green crackers, lighting oil lamps to save electricity, gifting homemade sweets and wrapping gifts sustainably. . Well, the glittery wrapping paper is synthetic and not sustainable at all. And the use of that paper is only short, like from the time of packing to tearing it open by the gift receiver, and then discarded. It lies around the environment for years. Instead we can gift wrap using newspapers or cloth. We know furoshiki right? But, not only Japanese, it is thousands of year old practice in India too. People bundled up their belongings in cloth during travels. The food or lunchbox was carried in cloth makeshift bags. It is still in practice in the villages. . I had this age old dupatta lying deep under in a suitcase for decades I think. Who will wear this type of clothes nowadays huh? I cut a few squares of different sizes to wrap gifts for family and friends this Deepavali. This cloth can be reused as many times as possible. I believe reuse is better than recycling. Early days of home ownership of Maggie left us with a quick need to address a big safety issue with her exposed chimney stacks. Most mortar had completely deteriorated, leaving the bricks to fall off the roof with every swift breeze. 💨 😱 Removing and rebuilding was going to be insanely expensive, so we made the tough call to remove the exposed brick stacks from the roofline and tucked the bricks away to save for a reimagined new second beginning. We’ve tossed around ideas for them like a garden path, fire pit, 🔥 landscape edging 🌺 , or even a water feature or bird bath 🦢! These are our wax melt tins, they're great for so many different things once you've used your melts! In this instance we're using them as cotton bud & reusable face pad holders... The cardboard packaging for the bamboo cotton buds are obviously sooo much better for the environment than the plastic tubs that others come in, but they don't last two minutes do they 😂 so here's a more durable storage option for them. Making a conscious effort to ditch single use plastic and find reusable/sustainable alternatives, it's not as hard as you might think but we've found that a little bit of inspiration goes a long way... So here's a really easy repurposing idea for the cardboard cylinders we package our candles in... Instead of popping them into the recycling they would make rather smart looking desk tidys / pen or paintbrush holders / stationary organisers. The labels can be removed super easily too for the neat freaks among us (myself included), and because they're cardboard they can be painted any colour you like or even just re-painted black to freshen them up! One idea is to keep your reusable face pads in them. I personally keep my clean ones in one bag and have a second one to keep the dirty ones in.
