From trash to treasure. There's a resourcefulness that comes from living in the country that I love - like turning old microwaves into mailboxes (I'm not 100% sure on the fridge, but let's just imagine it's a way to keep parcels safe + dry) Living in Cambodia not only taught me to Macgyver like a boss but also to appreciate where everything comes from and where it goes. If your microwave broke, you'd have to drive 5+ hours to the city to buy a new one and then find somewhere to put the old one. We learned to fix, make do, and go back to basics. To get creative, come up with out-of-the-box ideas, and give our minds a workout. No stupid ideas - alright, we had lots of stupid ideas, but they became hours of entertainment. These days, it's all too easy to rely on cheap + easy fixes. Convenience over creativity. It's the same with our minds and our stories. Every day, we create + curate more stories in our minds and carry them all around with us, letting them colour every experience, even when they're long past the point of serving us - like a broken microwave. It's all so subconscious and ingrained that we don't even stop to ask ourselves if they're true anymore - or if they were even true to begin with. Stories like: - our younger years will be our happiest (scientifically not true) - more stuff or a new car will finally make us happy (also not true - beyond getting our basic needs met) - getting good grades in school = more success in life - we need to know where we're going before we can take the first step That last one keeps a lot of us stuck in our comfort zones longer than it should. It stops us from dreaming big + taking action on our dreams; from reclaiming our lives. Truth is, the only thing that will actually help us be happy, successful, or get where we want to go is by examining those stories, letting go of all the outdated ones + rewriting them into something better. The philosopher's stone for turning trash into treasure is creativity + curiosity. An open mind and an open heart 💜 Step 1: open a journal/notes app + think about a question you're pondering Step 2: Write it down. Speak it aloud Step 3: Breathe deep Step 4: Let the magic in 💫

• WORLD LEATHER DAY It’s #worldleatherday and along with many other leatherworkers, I’m posting about this sustainable, robust and long lasting resource. As a non-meat eating maker, I have researched and sourced information from the leather industry to better understand the farming methods and environmental impact of this byproduct of the food industry, vs man made plant based materials. Grateful to @leather_uk and @sustainableleatherfoundation and even the @leather_museum for this information and support. I started working with leather over 15 years ago for an upholstery project. I successfully began marbling heritage craft patterns on leather over a decade ago. I use virgin veg-tanned leather hides for marbling, turning them into journals, cases, belts, bags, pet accessories and soft furnishings. The leather is sourced for its environmental impact and provenance. Repurposed leather, received from furniture and shoe manufacturers, is used in my community and school leather projects. As part of a textiles art project through B2B sustainable charity @blue_patch and @royaloperahouse I also repurpose theatrical textiles, donating part of my sales to charity each year. I’m just making a new batch of key fobs and cable tidies in time for @craftworks.show 15-17 May (you can book free entry tickets via my bio) The thick leather from the base of the ballet slippers is first thinned, cleaned and prepped, then marbled and made into small accessories and jewellery. I’m working on designs to incorporate the synthetic and cotton layers of each slipper too. It’s slow deconstructing and repurposing, but love that each slipper is saved from landfill. Leather can last a life time if cared for. Mönstret är variant av ”Esme” från boken ”Everyday Style” av Lotta Jansdotter. 🔸 Kjolen under tunikan är ett secondhand fynd och strumpbyxorna är från @snagtights och halskedjan med en fjäril är inköpt på en marknad i Budapest. 🦋 Sometimes I remember to take a picture and show ”Outfit of the day” when I use my self-made garments, yay 🙌 This was for Easter’s family dinner 🐣 🔸 The dress/tunic is made from a dear old pearl embroidered skirt that has become too small, baby corduroy for the upper body and an Indian block-printed cloth for the sleeves.
