Przestrzeni bezpiecznej i przyjaznej, broniącej i bronionej. - „… życie jest ciągłym przekraczaniem miary”. #mójgiovanni #jamesbaldwin #giovannisroom #tłumaczenie #andrzejselerowicz #wydawnictwokarakter #ksiazkimagazyndoczytania #elizabethcostello #siedem #wykładów #i #pięć #bajek #z #morałem #nowyteatr #książka #książki #czytam #czytaj #my #czytaniepobudzawyoraźnie #czytanieposzerzahoryzonty #czytaniezmuszadomyślenia #fotografia #book #books #bookstagram #bookphotography #booklove

I read my first James Baldwin book last year and was blown away. How had I loved this long without reading this profoundly affecting and honest body of work? So now I’m doing a @tandemcollectiveglobal read along (thanks for my free copy!) of Nobody Knows My Name. My expectations: I’m not really sure. I was so impacted on various emotional levels by The Fire Next Time that I’m hopeful that this will be more of the same. Baldwin’s life experience and world view are expanding my own as disparate from my own, but even more as communicated through his vividly human and powerful prose. I’m hoping for more of the same with Nobody Knows My Name. Stay tuned for further impressions as I dig in 😜 ❓QOTD: Have you read anything by James Baldwin? Ahoj! Mam prawo do swoich przyjemności, kropka. I basically rate books based on how they made me feel and my level of enjoyment while reading it but sadly, Giovanni’s Room only gave me a 3⭐️ feeling. No doubt it is a very beautifully written book but it’s a bit too melodramatic for my liking. The characters seem toxic and just constantly mistreat each other and that just didn’t sit well with me. Also not a fan of how women were portrayed in the book 👎🏻 What I did enjoy about Giovanni’s Room other than the prose is the atmosphere of Paris that James Baldwin painted: I love that he didn’t shy away from the grimy character of the city and didn’t attempt to over-romanticise the City of Love. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 . . . #bookstagram #books #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #igreads #bruneireads #reading #instabook #readersofig #bookcommunity #booksofig #igbooks #bruneianreaders #booktok #booklover #bookreview #2024reads #sgbookstagrammers #sgbookstagram #giovannisroom #jamesbaldwin

Go Tell It on the Mountain is James Baldwin’s semi-autobiographical first novel about a day in the 14 year-old life of John Grimes. John struggles living with his volatile preacher stepfather while contemplating his role as a first-generation Northerner in Harlem, where sin seems to steam off the pavement. The structure of the book greatly impressed me. All spanning in the course of a single day, we not only get John’s POV, but enter his aunt, stepfather, and mother’s prayers while they attend evening service. This structure emphasized the aloneness one can feel within a community. While John’s sections are firmly rooted in the present, each family member’s prayers jolt us through their memories. This distinguished how his family coming from the Jim Crow south, still carry their fear and shame in their bones; it suffocates them. John, however, is able to choose whether he’ll continue to be suffocated or if he’ll pave a new way. Starting and ending the novel with John’s perspective and even bouncing around the other characters in the present was particularly brilliant and cinematic. The complexities and nuances of religion and race is propulsive and intense, almost reading like a sermon at times. Everyone’s thoughts are riddled with a fear and anxiety over the sins they’ve committed and the powerlessness they feel walking in their skin. Such powerlessness leads them to constant thoughts of hate and violence towards others and themselves. This sometimes made the reading experience challenging and exhausting, which I believe is the point, but did sometimes prevent me from picking it up as often. This experience was unlike any other I’ve read. Looking forward to reading The Fire Next Time soon.

Had the privilege of seeing the Garrick Theatre’s production of For Black Boys Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy by the talented Ryan Calais Cameron. A masterclass in acting to movements to lighting to the sound, a truly incredible show that showcases the importance of theatre and storytelling as a whole. I understand I’m not bringing anything new around the conversation regarding this great show I must say to leave a theatre that’s in tears not because of sadness but because of hope is a experience I shall never forget. After that I ate (I understand I look hella ill in that picture) and got stuff. As always I spent too much on DVD’s- only I would get ID’d on a Derek Jarman film. Meeting the Man: James Baldwin in Paris (1970)

5/2/2024, 10:45:34 PM

The following reflections are from an essay, originally published in/for Mademoiselle Magazine, in which JB is on assignment, reporting on student activism in Tallahasse, Florida -- this is after the Greensboro (North Carolina) sit-in, the protest that launched and framed political activism on college campuses in the 1960s 👇🏾 "I wonder for the first time what it can be like to be making, in the adolescent dark, such decisions as this generation of students has made. They are in battle with more things than can be named. Not only must they summon up the force to face the law and the lawless—who are not, right now in Tallahassee, easily distinguishable—or the prospect of jail or the possibility of being maimed or killed; they are also dealing with problems yet more real, more dangerous and more personal than these: who they are, what they want, how they are to achieve what they want and how they are to reconcile their responsibilities to their parents with their responsibilities to themselves. Add to this exams: the peculiar difficulty of studying at all in so electric a situation: the curious demoralization that can occur in a youngster who is unable to respect his college president: and the enormous questions that, however dealt with or suppressed, must live in the mind of a student..." + James Baldwin in "They Can't Turn Back", 1960 . + Photo: James Baldwin, 1969 [ Photo Credit: Allan Warren ] . . . #blackculture #fortheculture #imrootingforeverybodyblack #blacklove #jamesbaldwin #jimmybaldwin #thefirenexttime #prophet #iamnotyournegro #jamesbaldwintaughtme #baldwinite #jamesbaldwinspeaks #wwjbd

The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin Late in April I read this little book. 89 pages of some incredibly powerful writing. Two essays in the form of letters The first is a short one called My Dungeon Shook: Letter to My Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Emancipation. ' You were born into a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways as possible, that you were a worthless human being. You were not expected to aspire to excellence: you were expected to make peace with mediocrity. ' It's a passionate piece about racial acceptance and integration. The second piece taking up the majority of the book is called Down at the Cross: Letter from a Region in My Mind. This essay takes a look at Baldwin's early life in Harlem. It may have been a 'free city' compared to the segregation that still existed in the south but it's an intense indictment of the racial prejudice of the time, the legacy of slavery, the rise of the civil rights movement and the role of religion. It's a plea to the nation to end the disparity between black and white. 'Colour is not a human or a personal reality; it is a political reality.' First published in 1963 and all these years later humans still have so far to go to realise their potential and create a better, fair world. Highly recommended. ✨✨✨✨✨5 stars Thank you @marcuharri for the gift of this book. It's my first time reading anything by James Baldwin. POV — a reminder for when you doubt your own goodness: no one is just good. we make mistakes. we learn from them. we do better. that’s how goodness works. it’s not about purity. it’s about growth. in world that praises the idea of perfection instead of imperfect goodness, in a world that has lost the ability to embrace nuance and complexity — we shy away from showing who we truly are. being seen can be scary and daunting, because it means breaking the image of perfection we hold for the world to see. The image of perfection the world demands to see in order to deem us worthy. but to be human is by definition to be complex. to have layers to our being. to make mistakes we can learn and grow from. to be collections of paradoxes. to constantly evolve and reshape who we are. to be worthy of being redeemed, to be shown grace, and still be loved and accepted for exactly who we are, for all the intricacies that make us who we’ve been, are and will be. • • • • • • • #selflove #beyourself #believeinyourself #acceptance #honoryourself #joy #jamesbaldwin #youareworthy #youareloved #trustyourself #quoteoftheday #quote #baldwin #bewhoyouare

You read something which you thought only happened to you, and you discover that it happened 100 years ago to Dostoyevsky. This is a very great liberation for the suffering, struggling person, who always thinks that he is alone. This is why art is important. Art would not be important if life were not important, and life is important. #JamesBaldwin

Healthy relationships of any type (romantic, friend, family, professional…) involve “mirroring and magnifying each other’s light”—there’s really no better way to put that! Have thoughts on this? Respectfully share them below and let’s learn from each other. 🫶 Text: “The longer I live, the more deeply I learn that love, whether we call it friendship or family or romance, is the work of mirroring and magnifying each other’s life.” - James Baldwin

Egyébként 2018-ban film is készült belőle.

Then the idea of becoming an artist as distinguished from a celebrity was real. I never wanted to become a celebrity. Being a maverick saved my life. What club could I have joined? I had to make peace with a great many things, not the least of which was my intelligence. You don’t realize that you’re intelligent until it gets you into trouble.” + James Baldwin in conversation with Julius Lester, 1984 (published as Reflections of a Maverick) . + Photo: James Baldwin, 1983 [ University of Massachusetts Amherst photo collection ] . . #blackculture #fortheculture #imrootingforeverybodyblack #blacklove #jamesbaldwin #jimmybaldwin #thefirenexttime #prophet #iamnotyournegro #jamesbaldwintaughtme #baldwinite #jamesbaldwinspeaks #wwjbd

Nothing more perfect than an embroidery of James Baldwin with a city skyline backdrop. Kit created by the amazing and talented @createtheculture_embroidery “You have to go the way your blood beats. The world is increasingly becoming a dark place where we cannot agree on what humanity should be behave like. We are in conflict with each other over human rights. I do not understand this. We are an organization that supports people who have been oppressed. There are women in this organization who have been brutally abused in so many different ways. Their freedoms had been taken away from them and yet today they are free and they are with us. However, there are many among us that are still oppressed, in cages by someone who they believed they could trust at one point in their life. We fight for freedom for all people and we have been doing so for over 12 years. I firmly believe that none of us are free until we are all free. I want to encourage you to read to understand the other side of the conflict. I mean, open your heart, read, and not just from one source, but from many. remember that history has always been written by the ones who remain in power. take a look around and see who is suffering and send them your love and shine your light. That is what we can do a survivors. See people and to hear people so that we can bear witness to their experiences. And remember that just because there is peace, it does not mean that all of us liberated. Rebel Thriver stands for the liberation of all. 🌀✊🏼💙🕊️ Ella #rebelthriver #ellahickscoaching #ellahicks #freepalestine #ceasefirenow #liberation #peace #freedom #jamesbaldwin #humanity #empathy #compassion #solidarity #survivor #cycleofviolence #advocate #abuse #oppression

Ah, #JamesBaldwin. What can I say? If you don't know, you're missing out. Like most things, I'm very picky & particular about what I read. I've been eating this book like candy. Will be sad when I'm done and at square 1 scratching my head & ass simultaneously as I figure out what to get next. It's always hard for me to find books that captivate every part of my mind and feed me. #JamesBaldwin is doing it for me in totality! #Books #Reading #JamesBaldwin #AmericanAutgor #Activist #PickyAboutMyBooks #Fiction #NonFiction #GreatRead

My April reading wrap up! I feel like I started off slow but thanks to already being more than halfway through a book and a couple of short reads I managed to finish nine books. “Hail Mary” has definitely been my most pleasant surprise this year. I’m not a sci-fi girly and even though I anticipated that I’d maybe like this book, I was not expecting to love it. And as always, my ratings and reviews are based off of my subjective experiences.. in which you can find more thorough reviews on their respective posts (“Miss Major Speaks” coming soon). Alsoooo… I dunno what it was with the “5.0” that it didn’t want to change the font style but I wasn’t going to waste anymore time trying to figure it out. Also, also! I got the idea to add some of my StoryGraph charts on here from @readingineden ! What were y’all’s favorite read of April? #readingwrapup #aprilreads #dystopianbooks #womenintranslation #jamesbaldwin #whatireadthismonth #filipinoreaders #litfic #classicbooks #literaryfiction #booksaboutfamily #favoritebooks
