Ten years ago, the Palestine Film Foundation created ‘The World is With Us’: Global Film and Poster art from the Palestinian Revolution, 1968-1980’, a series of cinema and gallery events which took place in London. The project took place in two venues and in two distinct formats. It opened with a screen programme at the Barbican Cinema (@barbicancentre), where some of the most striking films from the era were accompanied by daily screen talks with directors, composers, and more between May 16 and 18, 2014. This was followed by a gallery show at the Rich Mix (@richmixlondon)venue between May 19 and June 14, 2014, where further film was displayed along with a collection of posters from the revolutionary era. A series of public events including a symposium, a music performance, panel talks, and special screenings ran alongside the exhibition One of these venues has continued its work centering Palestinian film, arts, culture, & life, as the exhibition ‘Cuts’ by Palestinian artist Malak Mattar @malakmattarart shows her responsive sketches to the violence in Gaza, on view at @richmixlondon as part of @awanfestival. While the other venue - @barbicancentre - is unraveling thanks to a censorship controversy that has seen collectors and a growing number of artists remove their work from a current exhibition. What does it mean to be a "good listener" and stay present in situations? Do you have the opportunity to liberate your practice through play, storytelling, and tactility? "On The Record" leverages the power of oral histories and active listening to empower, educate, and fuel your creativity. Participants are encouraged to prepare stories of resistance and/or celebration, and their workshop partner will interpret and convey them into a visual dialogue through sketching and sewing onto fabric. Drawing from spiritual roots of colors and shapes to convey an aspirational visual language, ESEA Unseen guides participants through the second half of the exercise. By calling on practitioners from over a century ago, their application of forms and colors is still as contemporary as how artists and designers evoke emotion and connection today. Meet our Creative Lab facilitators for Workshop 6: Sound Stitching - Textiles Sketching & Acts of Listening, happening on Sunday, 10th March, from 2 to 4:30 pm at The Studio, @richmixlondon. 🎤Laura Khan Mitchison, co-founder of the London-based co-op "On the Record" @on_the_record_stories in 2012 with Rosa Schling, is one of our facilitators. Oral history, a shared process of recording and archiving people's lived experiences, is at the core of their work. Before anything else, they listen, asking questions like "What was it like to be a stay-at-home dad then?" and "What is it like to be a hospital cleaner now?" Each person’s account is uniquely transformed into sound walks, sculptures, radio, events, films, and books, in collaboration with the communities that share their memories. 🏆 On the Record has won national and international awards, including the Women’s History Network Community Prize (2020) and the first prize for the international sound arts award, Sound Walk September, in 2020 & 2022. Laura and her colleagues are frequently invited to contribute to education, policy, and national and international networks. 🌏 ESEA Unseen consists of Kim Chin @_kim.chin and Sue Man @suecraycray, who met through London’s creative-art-music-social circles during the early 2000s. They built their careers in visual arts, fashion, and textiles in different parts of the globe, knowing that one day they would collaborate on a project combining their unique perspectives and unexplored narratives. Through community organizing related to social justice and climate degradation, they participated in many events, deciding to reconnect and use textiles and conversations as a vehicle for healing. Meet our Creative Lab Facilitators for Workshop 4: Puppetry & Augmented Reality Sunday, 18th Feb, 2-4:30 pm (The Studio) @richmixlondon 🎨 @donshi is a London-based artist who uses architectural elements in his screenprinting, drawing, and etching work. He has incorporated augmented reality to create hybrid third spaces and has been commissioned for two AR tours in London's Chinatown, exploring identity, cultural symbolism, and mythology. He recently completed a residency at ESEA Contemporary in Manchester and served as the lead 3D designer and one of the Co-conceivers of Home X, a live dance performance that combines theatre, music, gaming, and VR technology. 🎭 @mikayla.design is a puppet designer and maker from the Philippines, currently based in London who has worked with puppets for film, theatre, and TV. Included in her puppet credits are RSC's "My Neighbour Totoro," Wholehog Theatre's "Garden of Words," BBC's "Doctor Who," and Disney's "The Lion King." She is passionate about telling East and Southeast Asian stories through puppetry and is developing her practice as a puppet theatre maker. Additionally, she has a company called "Puppet Theater Manila" that aims to introduce puppetry to the Philippines by telling Filipino stories, using Filipino materials, and training Filipino puppeteers. An associate artist at Jacksons Lane, Upswing Aerial Theatre, and Cambridge Junction, she performs both indoors and outdoors, showcasing her own developed works. In addition to her performances, Maisy teaches at Redbridge Drama Centre and serves as a workshop leader/facilitator for various arts organisations. A lifelong learner, she has completed BSL level 2 with intentions to progress further. Her overarching goal is to champion inclusivity and accessibility for people of all backgrounds through collaboration and community engagement. 💃 Co-founder of SAY, @yukiko.masui is an internationally renowned dancer and choreographer. Her collaborations span global contemporary dance companies, including Agudo Dance, Art of Spectra (SE), and TRIBE. With commercial credits from Nike to Marvel, she brings a unique flair to her choreography.
