The Abbey of San’Antimo is a former Benedictine monastery built in 1118 (12th Century) in the Romanesque style. Situated in the commune of Montalcino, it is now surrounded by olive groves, wheat fields, vineyards and isolated farmhouses. This post of Bernini’s Hidden Spiral Staircase is from one of our photos taken while travelling in Rome. Students of architecture study this staircase as it a first of its kind. The 17th Century staircase was designed by Italian sculptor and architect, Lorenzo Bernini, at the residential apartment of Pope Paul V attached to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The origins of this Cervara Di Roma hilltop village date back to the Benedictine monks in the 8th Century. Inhabited by less than 500 residents, it is perched high on the slopes of the Simbruini Mountains. The name originated from the fact the area was once densely populated by deer. This is my second view of the Castel Sant’ Angelo, which is a towering rotunda in Rome, Italy. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in 135 AD as a mausoleum for himself and his family.
