🍊 FOOD TASTING FUN! 🍋 In class this week we have had lots of fun learning the ‘y’ sound and singing all about eating yoghurt and bananas! Why not follow up our new sound with some food tasting fun at home, deciding which foods your little one thinks are y-y-yummy and which ones are y-y-yucky! It could be the perfect opportunity for them to try some new tastes and flavours, or you could just choose foods that they already know they like or dislike! Print off two funny faces😋😝 to lay on paper plates (or draw them on yourself!) and then let the food sorting fun begin! You could use 🍎Toy food 🥕Real food OR ✂️Cut out pictures of food from magazines (perfect for developing fine motor skills!) Our little ones learn so much from nursery rhymes. There is a wealth of vocabulary they can learn and because they’re taught through song, they’re much more likely to remember the words and to use them. A great way of engaging and extending their learning is through arts and crafts. This activity can be adapted to make it more simple/more complex depending on the age of the children. 1. If your little one is old enough get them involved in making some playdough. It’s a very cheap and simple activity (many playdough recipes on google). 2. If old enough, get little ones to help you cut up some pipe cleaners. Count them together to see how many you have. 3. Discuss the colours of the pipe cleaners and how many you have/need. 4. Get little ones to roll their playdough into a ball. 5. Little ones to stick the pipe cleaner into the playdough (great for building fine motor skills). 6. Now use the spiders to sing together. #robotregromford

They also provide a fun and engaging way for little ones to learn and explore the world. A great game that we play in our preschool class is ‘Kim’s game’. It’s great for developing memory skills and concentration and can be used to develop vocabulary too. Start with a tray of familiar items that the child can easily recognise (we use objects beginning with our sound of the week). Ask your child to look carefully at the objects on the tray and then cover them up. Can they name all the hidden objects? Or take one away and ask them which one is missing. Give your child instructions using sounds about where to put their toy e.g. Put your ‘bear’ on your ch-ee-k. Choose body parts/places that have two or three sounds such as h-ea-d, ch-i-n, b-e-d... Fishing games are great for supporting speech and language development. Children find them really fun and engaging. If you do not have a shop-bought fishing game, you can easily make your own. How to make your own fishing game… You will need: * String * A wooden dowel or wooden spoon * A small magnet * Metal paper clips For the fishing rod, first measure out and cut a length of string - the longer the string, the harder the fishing will be. Attach one end to the wooden dowel or spoon, and the other end to the small magnet. The metal paper clips can be placed on any printed visuals that you are planning to use. Language development: You could use picture of food, pretending you are going on a picnic. L is for... Have fun with this lovely little game to support listening out for the sound l. Grab a collection of objects from around the house - make sure to include some objects starting with the sound l (Lego, lemon, lolly, lipstick...) Ask your child to choose an object and say what it is. Repeat back the object and emphasise the initial sound e.g sssscissors, llllllemon. If the object starts with the sound l ask them to give you a thumbs up 👍🏼 if it’s the wrong sound then it’s thumbs down 👎🏼 Sort the objects into two piles. Recap each object that starts with the l sound. Challenge your little one to think of some more objects that start with l. Over the last couple of weeks we have been learning the sounds ‘o’ and ‘u’. Here is a fun game to help consolidate your little ones learning. Simply gather a few objects from around your home and grab a blanket or tea towel and the sound cards from class. If you say/show the ‘o’ sound your child will place an object on the blanket. If it’s ‘u’ they will pop it under the blanket. You could extend this by making some small cards with the o and u sounds. 🐤🐶🐷 🐮 🦆 Minis 🦆 🐮 🐷🐶🐤 Matching Animals to their Noises 🎶 Children in our mini classes are just beginning their phonic journey but before they learn letter sounds they need to be able to hear lots of different sounds. A simple game to try at home - all you need is a box and either a picture or toy animal. Put the picture/toy in the box and make the animal noise, see if they can guess what’s in the box. After you’ve played it a few times let them choose an animal to put in the box and see if they can make the noise. “I spy………something unique”👀🔎 Our classes offer something quite unique and special. A key focus of our preschool sessions is playing lots of games to encourage the crucial early skills of oral blending and oral segmenting. These are such important skills in the very early stages of phonics but they do not always come naturally, so children will need tuning into these along with plenty of practise at using them. Therefore, weekly games with Robot Reg encourage and demonstrate using these skills, whilst playing fun games and activities to reinforce them. Hopefully, there are some that you can follow up with at home too! D is for drum. This is one of the sounds we covered this term in our classes, we have had lots of fun learning all about the sound ‘d.’ The children really enjoyed doing a drumroll on their laps each time an object beginning with ‘d’ came out of the bag. Why not have a go at making your own drum at home and practice that ‘d’ sound. You could go on a hunt around the house looking for ‘d’ objects and play your drum when you find something! All you need is a tin can (careful of any sharp edges!), a balloon, an elastic band and some chopsticks (or similar) to play it. We used some flour in a tray and made footprints in it, and used a pastey brush to practise writing the d sound too.
