One that compliments not jeopardises your sport I attribute this more so than anything else to staying relatively injury free over the years. Where I have sustained an injury being pro active with physio and recovery. Have all helped me stay on the mats. Doing a bit of reading, thinking, contemplating whilst Iâm away this week. This quote jumped out at me from the page. âYou can be knowledgable with other menâs knowledge. But you canât be wise from other menâs wisdom.â I mean come on, wow. That says to me, you have to experience something over time to gain wisdom. Generally speaking I would say wisdom comes from failing ALOT. Experimenting. Understanding what works and what doesnât. You can be shown the lessons or the play book but wisdom comes from doing and learning the lessons. Something Iâve learned over the last 4 and a bit years running the club. The whole thing is a bit trial and error, people can tell you what they did and you can try to replicate, yet it never quite works out like that. I think we are starting to get things right. If you're a bit OCD when it comes to structure and timing. Then this week is perfect for you if you are wanting to start our beginners classes. I use that word hesitantly. Why? Well obviously they are the perfect place to start if you are a beginner. Monday 6-7pm Wednesday 7-8pm With the added bonus of this week being WEEK 1 in the syllabus so the curriculum has started back around for another 16 weeks. I think a better word is Fundamentals, as you will come back to these techniques time and time again. All the other classes build upon this foundation. As a blackbelt of almost 1 year the biggest insight I've had is how much of the fundamentals I am still understanding. New levels new devils. I had a lightbulb moment last week when we were working in mount, in how to control the position. So many nuances in positions and bodyweight. Don't neglect the fundamentals. Tuesday we had the pleasure of hosting a seminar with Pete âthe greekâ Letsos I hope everyoneâs wrists are ok as he showed us some of his devastating locks from various positions. Most common phrase used - âyep yepâ đ€Ł What was really surreal..... I picked him up from Manchester airport. So we are driving along and I say âyouâve trained a long time with Jeff Glover havenât you?â He goes âyeah Glover is one of my best friendsâ Pete starts messing on his phone, next thing; âhey yo glover, this guys a fan of yours.â Jeff Glover appears on Instagram live from San Diego. âyou know what the worst thing about the Irish is?â Pete corrects him, âNo dawg, this dudes from Liverpoolâ (Iâm not from liverpool, but this doesnt seem like the time to make the distinction between st. helens and liverpool đ€Ł) âoh my bad, you know what the worst thing about scousers is?â Jeff continues; âthey say lad after everythingâ Jeff then attempts to put on a fake Scouse accent and interrupts Pete with. âhey ladâ ânow then ladâ âyes ladâ Get to the hotel and Pete hangs up on him mid flow. Very random and surreal. The people iâve had the privilege to meet through this sport is crazy. My point being, Jiu Jitsu is this amazing community where it doesnât matter where you are the fact you practice jiu jitsu immediately connects you to a wider network of people all with a shared interest. believe it or not im actualy quite an introverted person. If it wasnât for the gym and training I probably wouldnât see many people to be honest. So for me the social aspect of BJJ is a massive benefit.
