TAHA (written and performed by Amer Hlehel) is Hlehel's love poem to Palestine. Initially performed at @youngvictheatre in 2017, the play loses none of its poignancy and relevance. It chronicles the life of an actual Palestinian poet Taha Muhammad Ali who had to flee his homeland for Lebanon at age 17, due to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. This is no didactic preaching about loss and displacement though. At its heart, TAHA is a simple story about basic survival and a man's humble dream to be a poet. If there is pain to be detected, this is because pain has been forcibly engraved into the Palestinians' DNA through the ongoing years of turmoil. Hlehel's vital strength is to peer beyond this inherited/ongoing anguish and deliver a poetic message of hope - that one day, humanity's decency and resilience would triumph. In the post-show talk, when asked why a suitcase was featured on the otherwise barren stage, the answer was a pithy quote adapted from the words of another Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, that "My homeland is a suitcase." We concluded the 10th Anniversary Celebrations of Roses of Peace and the Launch of the Harmony Champions Programme with a panel discussion titled, “Harmony in Diversity: The Singapore Blueprint”. Singapore has a remarkable history of building bridges between people of different backgrounds and social status, resulting in a unique multicultural and multireligious society that has stood the test of time. However, with the world becoming increasingly polarized, we need to renew our policies, mindsets and people to protect our peace and harmony. The Harmony Champions Programme aims to invest in the next generation of harmony champions and peace advocates in Institutes of Higher Learnings (IHLs) in Singapore. 👩🏻🎓👨🏻🎓 Why is this programme aimed at youths from Uni, Poly & ITE - you may wonder… Racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia are a global reality today. Recent studies have shown that, increasingly youths between the age of 18 to 35 exhibit a higher level of awareness of racist and xenophobic behaviours. Moreover, social media further amplifies racist incidents, making them more prominent to us. This is why the Harmony Champions Programme is important to we equip our youths, with the necessary skillsets to navigate sensitive settings involving race and religion. This initiative curated specially for youths hopes to create a positive ripple effect in IHLs by becoming a safe space for students to have respectful and nuanced conversations on topics surrounding race, religion, peace and harmony. It is an honour and a privilege to announce that we have secured the support of two strong and reputable advisors to our newly elected Management Committee (MC) of Singapore Indian Association (SIA). As we plan to lay a strong foundation in SIA's future, it is necessary for us to gain valuable advice and expert guidance to drive our transformational efforts forward. This is my 3rd year getting involved in this event. But this year is much more significant because this year is bigger and I am in the organising committee. In total 500 needy families benefitted, regardless of race, language or religion all over Singapore, involving 7 organisations and schools. A lot of planning, time and effort have been put to ensure this is a success. I was tasked to be the Emcee, doing up the LED screen display and other creatives, coordinating the flow of event with OT staff, agents , Harley Davidson bikers Street Coyotes Motorcycle Club who led the flag off ( they were so cool!!!! 😘) etc. I must say the teamwork was superb!.Everyone was so forthcoming with the common goal to give back to the community. A big shout out to OT management, who have been so supportive, OT staff with their unselfish assistance, ALL agent volunteers with their big hearts, AAG bonding dept (Rayne Adzharen) …everyone involved. As part of our inaugural Majulah Dialogue Series, Roses of Peace is excited to be holding a two-part dialogue series themed "Cancelling Cancel Culture?" with a particular attention to online discussions about race and religion. Today, we concluded the first part of the dialogue series, with over 100 super engaged participants. The discussion focused on the landscape surrounding topics including "cancel/callout culture", "wokeism" and "gaslighting" within Singapore's digital space with the aim of deep-diving into the current climate surrounding "cancel culture" and discussions on race amongst youths in Singapore and beyond. Roses of Peace organised the UAE-SG Women's Empowerment Forum 2021, in collaboration with the Embassy of United Arab Emirates in Singapore on 13 June 2021. Our distinguished panel of speakers included Professor Lim Sun Sun and Ms Huda Hamid from Singapore as well as Dr Wafa Zoghbor and Dr Balqees Naser Ahmed from the UAE. The forum saw many insightful and energetic sharing which included discussions on the issues affecting woman and innovative ways to achieve gender equality through empowerment and providing access to opportunities. On 17 April, three SSA youths attended the "Regardless of Race Dialogue VI" event organised by OnePeople.sg, Roses of Peace and Mothership. Hosted by Dr Janil Puthucheary, Chairman of OnePeople.sg with Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Education & Second Minister for Finance as the Guest of Honour, the event saw participants soaking in the insightful sharing from various distinguished panelists on the theme "Reflections and Aspirations". . Into its sixth and final run, the "Regardless of Race Dialogue" series started in 2019 as a platform to bring together diverse communities to exchange views and experiences on race relations and social cohesion with the objective to nurture a culture of trust and understanding in the community.
