On Saturday our friends at @oda_cle celebrated their 3rd annual clambake fundraiser and it was their biggest success yet! This past summer CRF and Open Doors Academy partnered up with @flatsplatform to create an unforgettable experience for ODA Scholars to get engaged with rowing and platform tennis. Over the course of four weeks we had the pleasure of teaching and sharing the sport of rowing with over 100 middle school scholars from ODA. CRF is looking forward to having an even larger impact in years to come. No matter what it is in life that brings you joy whether you can still do it yourself or not, I implore you to share it with others. This is the highest form of love you can give: your full attention and time to teach someone else how to do the thing that you love in a way that resonates with them. In my case, it’s the one thing I know how to do really well. I’m not sure how I feel about the sport of rowing right now. Even though I’m the executive director of a rowing foundation, It’s been a huge and challenging transition away from competitive rowing because of the way I had to leave. I think it will be quite some time before I stop grieving this loss. I’ve been struggling to enjoy being around the sport at all, but I’ll be darned if I don’t give my all in teaching someone how to do this sport to the best of my ability. To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift. So, regardless of what happens with my own relationship with rowing, if I’m teaching someone else how to do it and be about it— it’s going to be all I have. Working with these Middle Schoolers is a joy. We are excited to announce a new initiative by our RowCleveland program. It is part of CRF’s mission to make rowing more accessible to the people of Cleveland. One way we are doing this is by offering free indoor rowing classes all winter long. If you’ve ever been curious about rowing but weren’t sure where to start, we invite you to come to CRF on Mondays from 6-7 pm where you will learn how to master the technique on the @concept2inc rowing machine while getting a fantastic full body workout, and maybe make a few new friends too. Classes will be led by CRF’s new Executive Director, Jen Forbes, who has recently transitioned away from Olympic rowing pursuits; and, is excited to share her 17 years of experience with people of all ages, ability levels, and backgrounds.
