The Florida Rowing Center is offering a ✨FREE✨ Learn to Row Day 🚣 this Saturday, May 4, from 9 AM to 11 AM. Sessions will be available for ages 12-17 and adults. The free learn to row day will introduce each person to the concept of rowing, using both land and limited water demonstrations, along with participation. Participants must be able to swim, and should dress in a non-baggy attire, and wear socks and shoes. Hair should be pulled back away from the rower's face. A hat 🧢 or visor, sunglasses 🕶️, and sunscreen ☀️ are also recommended. Toby started off the new 2024-25 season with a bang by breaking Andy Benko’s one-hour world record of 17,314 meters (1:43.9) for the 50-54 year age group. Toby set off with the aim of beating David Gillard’s British record of 17,248 meters (1:44.3) but at halfway was still feeling really strong. He worked hard to stay within touching distance of the world record (1:43.9), knowing that even if he fell short, he would still be good for the British record. In a final push over the last 3 minutes, Toby managed to squeeze the average split down enough to beat the old world record by just 8 meters. The new world record is 17,322 meters. Toby is six weeks into a new 12-week volume program, so he wasn’t expecting this achievement. 🥉 Bronze at JIRR 🥉 Well done to the Cantabs junior girls for some impressive performances across various crews representing the Eastern Region at the Junior Inter Regional Regatta (JIRR). Racing in a range of boat types including eights, coxed and coxless fours and quads and a single, the girls enjoyed some great performances. Special congratulations to Eilidh Hutton who won bronze in the J15 1x, as well as the junior girls’ coaching team for a host of great results. Thx to everyone who entered our 47th Annual Open Ocean Regatta including this Coastal quad from @southendrowingclub. If you’re curious to know the days stats, we had 83 boats, 126 competitors, 4 race courses (2 out the Gate, 2 around Angel Island), 4 group starts, 8 safety boats and 37 volunteers! We had an amazing turnout from the outrigger canoeing community with three OC-6s from @tamalpaisocc and @kaiwainb on the courses. The rowing turnout was likewise inspiring with 57 shells holding 85 rowers. Three coastal coxed-quads raced out the Gate. Amazing right! BUCS Regatta Entry Update. Non-events The Open Intermediate Lwt 4x has not received sufficient entries to justify running the event. Alternative racing opportunities have been offered to entrants. Open Lightweight 1x The Open Championship Lwt 1x and Open Intermediate Lwt 1x will be combined and raced together. Separate medals and Victor Ludorum points will be awarded for each boat class. Changes to Intermediate events A proposal was submitted by a coach and discussed at an open coach/club captain forum at the end of 2023 where it was agreed that semifinals for intermediate events would no longer been offered. This in turn has provided time within the schedule to offer one additional Final (“G” for crews 37-42) in the below events: 0 Int 1x 0 Int 2x W Int 2x W Int 4x W Int 1x WInt 4+ 0 Int 4+ 0 Int 4x Changes to Championship events Based on the entry received a “B” final will be added to the schedule in the below events. Where there is a B final, the progression will be as per the published draw scheme with the top 2 from each repechage proceeding to the A final, 3rd, 4th, 5th to the B final, remaining crews eliminated. Since his last Team JL Spotlight, Ben has joined the national rowing team and competed in the international Olympic Hopes Regatta. His boat won the prestigious 8+ race "Primatorky" and he earned 3 gold medals at the National Championships. "This year I am hoping to qualify for the national team and therefore able to compete in international competitions and championships. I am also looking forward to the National Championships." Favorite & least favorite training sessions? "The long indoor ergo sessions with dark and cold weather outside are just not my cup of tea. On the other hand, I love the summer outside trainings especially in an eight where the atmosphere is always incredible." Best race prep? "I always do some warm-up including dynamic stretching and running followed by short breathing exercise to prepare the breathing muscles. I also highly recommend practicing visualization, as it allows you to prepare yourself for variety of situations and make you prepared for everything that comes up so you can focus only on the performance." 📸: @hudecbenjamin
