One day after a Texas mom was forced to flee her state to get an abortion to protect her own health, President Joe Biden blasted the Republicans who made the horrifying outcome a reality. “It is simply outrageous,” Biden said. “This should never happen in America, period.” Abortion is banned in virtually all cases in Texas, so 31-year-old Kate Cox tried to obtain court approval for an abortion because her fetus was diagnosed with trisomy 18, a fatal genetic abnormality that usually results in miscarriage, stillbirth, or death soon after birth. Did you know four NC governors have died in office? And one died before taking office? The fourth (and hopefully, last) to die in office passed away this week in 1954. It was Gov. William Umstead, a Bahama native who grew ill after his inauguration and suffered a heart attack two days later. He was confined to his bed for most of his time in office, according to the NC Department of Culture and Natural Resources. Umstead passed away the following November because of his heart. Today Gov. Roy Cooper visited Glenn Elementary School in Durham to announce $1.4 million in federal funding will go to expanding school breakfast programs in the state. School officials say the breakfast program at Glenn Elementary has increased academic performance and reduced the need for discipline. “Food is the most important school supply, and getting kids off to a good start early in the morning with a good breakfast is, I think, the right thing to do,” said Morgan Wittman Gramann, executive director of the North Carolina Alliance for Health. Gov. Roy Cooper’s Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs has four new members from the Charlotte area. Stefanía Arteaga, Lariza Garzón, Federico Rios and Daniel Valdez are among 27 Latino leaders from across the state appointed to serve two-year terms on the board.
