Happy moment share time!! A super exciting thing happened for me!!! I was chosen for the 2024 SCBWI-LA mentorship!! For those that aren’t sure what SCBWI is it’s the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. I was over the moon excited when I saw that Jaime Zollars was going to be the mentor. Her illustrations have a touch of strange to pull you in with LOADS of magic and beauty to keep your eyes wandering around her illustrations. THIS is a quality I strive for. I had been looking for the right mentor for a couple of years now. I felt like I kept hitting walls with my portfolio and the search for agents. Having pivoted a career direction from fashion flats at Patagonia to comics, creatures and children’s books made it very difficult to find colleagues to dive into illustration “shop talk”. I am so grateful for all the amazing online friends who have been supportive and helping me along this journey. This quote by Neil Gaimen really sums up what I set out to do: “Something that worked for me was imagining that where I wanted to be, an author, was a mountain. A distant mountain. My goal. And I knew that as long as I kept walking towards the mountain I would be all right. There is a well known phrase in the Quran “with hardship comes ease.” The phrase that immediately follows is: “so when you are relieved, still toil.” (94:5-8) It reminds me that toil and ease are interconnected. This past weekend I had my first in-person event! Seeing friends, family, and readers (new friends) fill the room gave me so much courage. Their positive energy fueled me. And I can’t believe the books sold out! But before (and after) these good days, there were also bad days. IG is the highlights reel! Hey friends! Here is my piece for the Mary May day 5 prompt. Our Lady Queen of Heaven and Earth. . You know what came to mind while I was painting this? "The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold." Psalm 45.👍🎶 . I chose our Lady of Guadalupe because I love her mantle full of stars. 🥰🌠 My favorite part of creating this piece was making the halo. 😇I hope you like it! . I’m inspired by @elanakarnold, @amyrubinate1, @ericsmithrocks, @henrylienauthor, @knordynordy, @saraschon_, @riekomendezwriter, @erindealey, @uyenloseordraw. And I’ve been thinking about the best kind of writing day - and I thought, for me, it’s also one connected to mature/myself. I felt that when I started working on a story standing at the edge of the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare Ireland 🇮🇪 a few years ago. Inspired to work on that tale today. St. Cecilia is usually depicted with a musical instrument, but I chose to depict her singing because it is said that her heart sang a song of love to God. 🎶😃💖 Isn't that beautiful? . This is my first carousel art post. It was fun creating this piece. I started the sketch on Saturday, colored a bit yesterday and finished the piece today. 🙂 Check out my stories to see the sketch and some process pics. . Fun fact, St. Cecilia is my confirmation saint. Also, yesterday before Mass, My pastor asked me to relay a message to one of the members of the choir. It was my first time up in the choir loft and as I walked up the stairs I was greeted by a stained glass window of St. Cecilia! Of course she would be present in a choir loft but I usually have no reason to go up there, so it was nice how she popped into my life right when I was drawing her. 😁🙌
🎉 Happy Feast Day of St. Elizabeth of the Trinity! 🎉 . Have you heard of this awesome saint? 😊 She's a spiritual sister to St. Therese, having also felt the call to Carmel at a young age. Her name was Elizabeth Catez and was born in 1880 and died in 1906 at the age of 26. She loved to play the piano and was very talented but the call to devote her life to God was even stronger. She suffered of Addison's disease while and Carmel but she felt the suffering was a gift from God and desired nothing more than to be united with Him. Her last words were, "I am going to Light, to Love, to Life!" . ❤This year my family and I were blessed to be enrolled in the brown scapular on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I love learning about the Carmelite saints and the brown scapular helps me to feel a special connection to them. :) . This print is available in my shop.
