a book I just read... The Twyford Code by Janice Hallett. Steve Smith didn't have the greatest of childhoods, but he did have one fantastic teacher. Now, almost 40 years later and recently released from prison, he wants to find out what happened to this teacher. You see, she disappeared right around the time of a field trip which came about after he brought into school a book by children's author Edith Twyford, whose books were purposefully not made available at schools and libraries. JANICE HALLETT IS AN ABSOLUTE F[EXPLETIVE]KING GENIUS. This is such a clever story which took me down a variety of different Internet rabbit holes, including Enid Blyton- I knew she was controversial but I didn't know how far back this went. Thought it was a 21st century thing but no, it started before my MOTHER was born. (Please bear in mind that I am 40 at time of writing this post). I don't want to say too much for fear of slipping something I shouldn't, but I think this is my favourite one of her books to date. Would make an excellent book club pick. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hallett reigns supreme in my eyes for contemporary mystery writing and you will not be able to persuade me otherwise. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐫𝐲 is a dedication to Agatha Christie, one of the author’s favorite mystery writers. So it’s a personal book for him, like he mentioned. Here, the story is about Lana Farrar, an ex-movie star, who invites her closest friends for a weekend getaway on her private Greek island. In 48 hours, one of them will be dead. Should I say that I loved the fact Greece was mentioned once again in his books? For me, it was the perfect setup. Although the story doesn’t bring something new to the table, it’s the classic story of a murder on an island, I liked that the narrator is also a character in the story. I know other readers didn’t appreciate it :D I simply devoured the chapters where his life story is revealed. Overall, I felt the story was slow here and there, and it didn’t completely reflect the author’s style overall. Is this my favorite book from the author? 📖 Review: AND THEN THERE WERE NONE by Agatha Christie 🔦 My immediate thought upon finishing is that I need to reread this so I can see if I can identify the murderer along the way now that I know whodunnit. This was a fun, wild, ride that awed me both in complexity and the realizations of how many other books/movies/stories are based on this book! I was kind of overwhelmed by the number of characters at first, they all blurred together with jumping around POVs and the very BRITISHNESS of it all. There is also some dated/offensive language causally used that I guess was normal at the time but shocked me (antisemitic and colonizer-y). But otherwise, the story stood the test of time and I would recommend it to any mystery lover! Ik had er enorm veel zin in om weer gezellig over boeken te kunnen praten met een koffie of thee. ☕️ Vandaag besproken we Five Survive van Holly Jackson en hier is onze ongezoute mening: Algemene score: 3⭐️ We vonden het leuk om eens een ander boek te lezen dan het vaste genre dat de vorige boeken hadden en hadden er ook wel hoge verwachtingen van. Enkelen van ons hadden wel moeite om door het eerste deel te raken. Er waren zo goed als geen beschrijvingen van de personages en het boek was in 3e persoon geschreven, wat het soms wel ingewikkeld maakte. De personages maakten vaak vreemde keuzes waardoor ik vaak wel een facepalm deed omdat we het zelf wel anders zouden doen. 😅 Desondanks die mindere punten aan het boek kwam er wel een goede plottwist waardoor we wel blij waren dat we het boek hadden uitgelezen. Echter was het wel een open einde en weten we tot nu toe nog niet of er een tweede deel komt. 🙃 We waren het ook wel eens met elkaar dat dit boek een heel goede film zou kunnen zijn. I liked reading for both Maya and Naomi's perspectives. Lauren Ling Brown did a great job of connecting the sisters' lives at Princeton even though they were 10 years apart. I really enjoyed how everything tied together in the end and the book was full of surprise turns. Definitely recommend. 🕸️The Only One Left- Riley Sager Kit has no choice, because of the situation with her last patient, she HAS to take the job… the job caring for the woman who supposedly killed her whole family. It doesn’t take long to realize that everything is just a little off at “Hope’s End”, the house on the cliff, where an entire family died, except one. This was a story with a seemingly endless amount of twists and turns, some were easy to see coming and others not so much. The story is set in a ghostly Hill Tom city where the dark forests and the city hotel have a major role to play. Mark Moon, the leading protagonist, is a techie and is set to receive his biggest reward for his innovation. Unaware of the uncanny situation that lay ahead, he was bogged down in a court case and ended up with Ms Queen- her lawyer. While navigating through the case proceedings, Queen sets some strict rules for Mark until he finds himself questioning her truth and existence. She has her little secrets tucked away from the lights of the city. . Apart from the two leading protagonists, the involvement of other characters seemed quite significant. The story is initiated with a promising plot and gets better with every page and chapter. The actions and scenes were marvelously exhibited. The narrative was appreciative. Although the book was engaging right from the beginning, a thorough proof reading is highly suggested for a better and error free reading experience. The cliffhanger was totally a surprise for me, and I'm looking forward to the sequel. . In conclusion, I was enjoying the whole plot, the climax, the backstory and the character progression.
