If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll remember that I first launched this directory back in 2021. Since then, the directory has helped connect publishers and authors with South Asian reviewers so that we are the first to review books that are by and about us. It’s been a while since I’ve promoted the directory, so I thought I would take some time in the days leading up to & during this #AAPIHeritageMonth to do so—especially as South Asians are often forgotten when it comes to Asian representation (in the literary sphere and beyond). 📖 The goal of the directory is to increase visibility of South Asian authors and bookish creators by allowing South Asian reviewers and authors to highlight each others’ voices and stories. ❤️ The directory allows South Asian reviewers to be the first to comment on books about their own community, and gives publishers/authors easy access to these reviewers. been binge watching Fallout on Prime. Fallout 4 was one of the main inspiration for the series that How We End is an origin series to. It started off as a post-apocalypse set around 1000 years from now, but when my brother read the first few chapters he asked: how did it get like this? And this is how the seed of How We End was planted. My idea was an origion story to a world vastly different from our own, not even recognisable. The only thing “wrong” with Amari and The Night Brothers is that it took me so long to read it! Amari’s brother Quinton has been missing for six months and she is determined to find him. One night she discovers a ticking briefcase in his closet marked for her eyes only. In it she finds a nomination for a summer tryout at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs. Certain this bureau contains the key to locating Quinton, Amari embarks on a journey to become a junior agent in a world full of aliens, supernatural creatures and even black magic. Amari is an incredibly likeable character full of heart and her own Black Girl Magic. She never gives up on trying to find her brother and along the way takes readers on an epic adventure full of mystery, action and some crazy plot twists. The ending left me and my son craving more of this story. We cannot wait to dive into Book 2 and are excited for the release of Book 3 later this summer.

The marvel would be how little the water moved, how the deep seemed to gulp him whole without even opening its mouth.” when a book is so good it makes you want to finally return to bookstagram, just so you can talk about it with people 🙏🏻 i read kaveh akbar’s MARTYR! over the weekend and absolutely adored it. like, listened to my classical music playlist & cried while reading the last 50 or so pages, immediately added it to my ‘favourites’ bookshelf, and kind of want to reread it already—that kind of adored it. it’s a book that somewhat defies description, but i’ll try to give you an idea. it’s about loss & grief, about identity & legacy. it’s about addiction & the difficult path towards recovery, it’s about mental illness. it’s about sacrifice. it’s about wanting to die & also about wanting to want to live. it’s about finding meaning in life (or, at the very least, in death). it’s about how art & writing can be the lifeline you hold onto, when everything else feels lost. it’s, in every single page, about love. i’ve read & loved some of kaveh akbar’s poetry before, which was what initially drew me to MARTYR!, and it’s clear on every page that a poet wrote this novel. it’s stream-of-consciousness-esque, non-linear, fever-dreamy, beautifully descriptive, confessional, & jumping from one pov to the next. it’s a book where you want to underline so many sentences & paragraphs that the idea of underlining almost becomes unnecessary. it has the kind of writing that reminded me why literature is one of my favourite things in the world. i added some of my favourite passages of MARTYR! on the next few slides, but let’s leave this not-really-review with a last quote as well: “Love was a room that appeared when you stepped into it. Cyrus understood that now, and stepped.”

🎧Book Review: James by Percival Everett James is a retelling of Huckleberry Finn told from Jim’s perspective. What I liked: 📚 I remember reading this book in school and being so uncomfortable. It wasn’t just the excessive use of the N-word but the way that the story treated Jim. In “James”, Jim is given a name. He reads. He lives his family. He code-switches and teaches his family how to speak and behave in order to keep White people comfortable and, in turn, stay alive. The book was funny and full of adventure and because Everett wrote the characters as while people, I’d say it was better that the original. What I Didn’t Like: 📚 The twist re: Huck was unnecessary. I was left thinking, “what am I supposed to do with this information?” Overall, it’s a great story and I highly recommend it.
Back to danmei today! Got my copy of The Husky and His White Cat Shizun vol 5 early, and was really excited to read this. The first part of the arc deals with the suspicious love triangle of Nangong Si, Song Qiutong and Ye Wanxi. I honestly didn't expect all the twists and turns in the story! The middle part was actually insane! Don't want to go into spoilers, but damn! I really didn't see most of these twists coming. 😳 The focus goes back to Mo Ran and Chu Wanning in the last third of the book. They have some incredibly tender and sweet scenes 😭❤️ like seriously, the one at the end has become one of my favourites (if you read it, you know 🌙💕) . Now of course, I'm worried about what's to come 😭 because you know in 2ha a happy scene is followed by a ton of angst!
Just finished The Seep by Chana Porter. It's been a long time since I read a sci-fi and I sped through this trans and queer novel, I couldn't put it down! It follows Trina (a 50 year old trans woman) as she deals with the life-changing decision her wife makes, altering both their trajectories. Set against a backdrop of "gentle" alien invasion by the entirety known as the Seep, which dismantles capitalism and wins the human race over with utopian and pacified connections. It ultimately does what any good sci-fi should do (in my opinion) which is explore the human experience and as such, it is a great exploration of grief and relationships. However, I want more from this world and hope that Porter expands this series in some way. There were a lot of unanswered questions I had around the world building and felt the 'short story' at the end was key to contextualising the main narrative. I just adore Anoosha Syed’s illustrations - they’re always so bubbly & cheerful! 🥰 When I first saw the cover for Lost Stick, I had 2 thoughts - I love the colors, but I don’t often gravitate towards books about pets, as ADORABLE as the pup on the cover looks. Well, I’m glad I gave it chance because I read Lost Stick with my littles a few days ago & we all enjoyed it so much! First of all, I love the name Milo, it’s just the cutest name for a pup (and an actor 😂) But really the whole book was adorable from start to finish! One day, Louise takes Milo to his favorite place in the world - the park. They stumbled upon the perfect stick (aptly named Stick) and decided it would be perfect for fetch. When Milo thinks Louise throws Stick too far, Milo goes on a quest to bring back Louise’s favorite stick. Only he doesn’t find Stick right away. So he keeps searching, and searching, and searching. Before he knows it he’s on a journey all alone his own, separated from both Stick and Louise! How far will he journey before he finds them again?! Okay one hilarious detail that I’m not sure how totally missed until the very end of the book was that Louise didn’t actually throw the stick before Milo went on his long journey! Apparently my kids were paying more attention to the illustrations than I was - though to be fair we read this before bedtime 😂 I guess this goes to show that kids are NEVER too tired for a bedtime story & notice everything. 🤷🏻♀️ Also they giggled SO hard at the expressions on the last spread! Did I say adorable & cute enough?! Today is the final day of @disability.book.week and the final day of my ebook sale! Having been paralyzed and forced to depend on a wheelchair, so many people have said my life "must suck." Yet, this chair, titanium frame and knobby wheels, this chair gives me freedom. Not only have I learned to navigate the world with my wheels, I've learned how to enjoy it in a way I never imagined. My chair has opened so many doors and given me a perspective I may have otherwise never gained. I've often said that my accident and injuries are one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Perhaps that's me coping, but maybe it's also a little bit true. I'm proud of who I am, wheels and all. I'm grateful for every push and every adventure. I'm blessed for this second chance, and I'll continue to live each day with this intention. 💜💜💜

This is a very harsh read but very worth it. Cristina and Clement, they have faced the death of their father and their mother is on the brink of it due to a curse. They undergo injustice, lies, family secrets, trauma and extreme circumstances that take them to their limits indulging them into violence, anger and rage. Their family has been separated and have not talked to each other in a long time due to secrets and not being able to meet eye to eye. My Independent Bookstore Day Haul 📚 Yes, I shopped early Saturday morning at my fav indie bookstore @sidetrackbookshop and picked out some new books. And of course, I went back later that evening and bought two more!! James is my favorite read of the year so far and I own the ARC, but I had to get a finished copy!! I had the wonderful opportunity of hosting a writing workshop for the Exploring Worldwide Art Forms event all the way in Waterloo on Thursday April 25 and we had the most amazing time. 📚😁 These aspiring authors sure understood the assignment and they crafted some amazing stories and even drew some illustrations too. Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector You know how much I love magical realism, esp Latin American flavours of it, and most esp when women write them. This one though, was not easy to read. Lispector's Rodrigo - the narrator of this story starts with the art of writing (while he's mostly sickened by it, wants to finish it ASAP) and tells you the story of Macabea - whom he is obsessed with. But he calls her sickly and pitiful and stupid and worthless because she is poor, because she is drawn to little things like words she listens to on the radio and because she isn't deemed worthy by Olympico - the asshole whom she dates for a brief while. I don't know what kind of reverse psychology this Lispector uses but somehow the only real beauty of it is Macabea and her will to love and her commitment to endless curiosity about existence. So it's kind of brilliant how Macabea is named after the Macabre and she especially loves horror movies where women are hung or shot through the heart. And then she goes and makes you fall in love with yourself and all the parts of you that someone might have called weird or stupid or selfish (like Olympico does to Maca). She is curious about the word "mimetism" and tells her boyfriend this. Boyfriend is useless and rude. Then Maca takes one day off from work just to stay alone in the boarding place (where she is left after everyone in her family dies). Maca discovers the pleasure of solitude. Then another day after the useless Olympico dumps her, she decides to throw herself a party. And so she goes and buys herself a red lipstick. That's all. That's the party. And then so many things happen in the story which is mostly boring because Lispector really got the irritation of a man who at once is obsessed and irritated with the woman, too correctly. (And this is where I really dislike the book). I think what I like most about this book, and why I'll return to Lispector is because she does an insidious thing to you. She makes you realise that if you ignore shitheads like Olympico who will only light gas with every word you say - because he doesn't understand you; Contd. In comments.
