1978 Topps Ruppert Jones (All-Star Rookie) On this date in 1976, Jones is selected by the Mariners with the first overall pick in the expansion draft. The draft features the two new MLB franchises (Seattle and the Toronto Blue Jays), who select 30 players apiece from other AL teams. The 21-year-old outfielder was taken from the Royals, where he was a prospect in their farm system. "Our first choice was exactly what we wanted," said Lou Gorman, the Mariners' chief of baseball operations. "He can play." The pick was announced by actor/comedian Danny Kaye who was part-owner of the Mariners. Jones would quickly become a fan favorite in Seattle and became their first ever All-Star in 1977. The Royals originally drafted Jones in the third round of the 1973 MLB draft out of Berkeley High in California. He spent three years in the minors before competing for the Royals right field job in 1976 spring training. He was ultimately assigned to Triple-A before being called up during the second half of the season for 28 games. The Royals were rich in prospects going into the expansion draft and decided to protect outfielder Willie Wilson and shortstop U.L. Washington, thereby leaving Jones exposed. "He was one of our top prospects," said Royals manager Whitey Herzog. "He's a player of great potential." Jones burst on the scene in 1977, hitting 17 homers with 50 RBIs at the All-Star break to be named to the AL All-Star team. His popularity in Seattle soared, starting with the center field fans known as "Roop's Troops." and soon spreading to the entire Kingdome crowd who would chant "Roop, Roop, Roop," every time he came to bat. He finished the year with 24 homers and 76 RBIs and amazed with his defense and range in center. Jones had his 1978 season interrupted by injury, but returned in 1979 to play in all 162 games, hitting .267 with 109 runs, 21 homers, 78 RBIs, and 33 steals before being traded to the Yankees. Jones would make an NL All-Star team with the Padres in 1982 and win a World Series with the Tigers in 1984, but was plagued by injuries throughout most of his career before retiring in 1987. He hit .250 with 147 home runs and 143 steals in 4,415 at bats.

1986 Topps Harold Reynolds rookie card On this date in 1986, Reynolds ties the major league record for assists by a second baseman with 12 in a 4-1 Mariners win over the Orioles at the Kingdome. Playing behind Seattle pitchers Mark Trujillo and Mark Huismann, both sinkerballers, Reynolds had 10 assists on straight grounders, one on a double play, and one that caromed off Huismann's glove. “It was one of those nights” Reynolds said. “I was anticipating stuff. It was easy because Mark and Mike were both hitting their spots. Then you can adjust to where you anticipate they will hit the ball." Two of Reynolds assists came on spectacular plays to rob Orioles left fielder Larry Sheets, ranging far to his right in the fourth inning to make a diving stop and far to his left in the sixth to cradle another one. “He just kind of looked at me after the second one,” said Reynolds of Sheets. “He was laughing and said 'Get out of here. Let’s go.’" Reynolds broke the previous club record of 10 set by Julio Cruz when Eddie Murray grounded to him to start the ninth inning. "I didn't know what everyone was yelling about," said Reynolds. "Usually after two outs they start cheering. There was only one out so I looked up at the scoreboard and saw the record." Reynolds, who was raised in Corvallis, was a Cruz fan “I grew up watching him. He was me of my favorites,” Reynolds said. “It hasn't hit me yet. But it’ll be a night I’ll always look back on." Reynolds was originally drafted by the Mariners with the 2nd overall pick in the 1980 MLB draft and made his major league debut in 1983. He was called up for good in 1986 and played his first 10 seasons with the Mariners. Reynolds was an All-Star in 1987 and 1988 and won three straight Gold Gloves at second base from 1988-1990. He led the league with 60 steals in 1987, 11 triples in 1988, hit .300 with 184 hits in 1989, and scored 100 runs in 1990. Reynolds would lead all AL second baseman in assists five times, double plays five times, and putouts three times. After his retirement in 1994, he would go on to career as a broadcaster with ESPN and the MLB Network.

1992 Topps Jay Buhner On this date in 1993, Buhner becomes the first player in Mariners history to hit for the cycle. The Seattle right fielder achieves the feat in dramatic fashion, hitting a triple in the 14th inning and scoring the winning run in an 8-7 victory over the A's at the Kingdome. "Bone" started the day with a grand slam and became the first player with a slam as part of a cycle since Jimmie Foxx in 1933. He would finish the season with 27 homers and 98 RBIs. Buhner entered the day hitting .298 with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs while A"s pitcher Kelly Downs had a rocky first inning, giving up back-to-back singles to Mike Felder and Rich Amaral and then walking Ken Griffey Jr. and Pete O'Brien to force in a run. Already up 1-0, Buhner greeted him on the first pitch he saw with a rocket into the left-center field bleachers for a grand slam. He came up again in the third and hit an opposite field drive into the gap in right for a double and then hit a line drive single to left in the fifth. The A's rallied to take a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth before a Bill Haselman homer in the bottom of the inning tied things up and eventually led to extra innings. After coming up empty in three straight at bats, Buhner led off the 14th with a fly ball high off the right field wall off reliever Shawn Hillegas. The ball ricocheted past Ruben Sierra in right and Buhner dove safely into third base with a triple and the first ever cycle by a Seattle Mariner. After an intentional walk and a ground out, Buhner scored on a wild pitch for the game-winning run. "I was hoping it would go out," Buhner said of the triple. "But when it hit off the wall and bounced away I put my head down and went as fast as I could. I don't hit many triples so this was extra special to me. But the big thing is that we won the game." Two seasons later, Buhner helped lead Seattle to their first AL West title and hit .383 with 4 homers in the playoffs. He would hit 307 home runs over 14 seasons with the Mariners, including three straight 40-homer seasons from 1995-1997, and won a Gold Glove in 1996. Buhner was just the second player inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame in 2004.

One of my favorite cards since 1990. Ken Griffey Jr was awesome to watch and as a kid I saw him hit several home runs at Fenway Park. In 1994 when the tiles at the Kingdome fell, we went to Fenway for the general admission makeup games. Being some of the first people in the park, we had our choice of where to sit and we chose to sit behind the visitor’s dugout to get as close to The Kid as possible. Griffey blasted a three-run homer in the first inning and then later followed his offensive display with a defensive gem, robbing Texas slugger Juan Gonzalez of a home run. She received a free ticket to any American League Baseball game for the rest of her life. She took me (at 14 years old) to this game :-). How cool is that? 2. Special thanks to Dewey St Germaine from California for finding this ticket for me. This was a ticket of my first MLB baseball game ever attended on my 11th birthday. It was a classic for many reasons. Score was 2-2 in 6th inning and Thurman Munson would hit one of his final Home Runs of his life (tragically perished in plane crash a few months later). It was a 3 run HR to put the Yankees up 5-2. Seattle would go on to score 1 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th to win 6-5. Awesome day at the Kingdome.
