Day 19 - Neptune is Australian We have entered into the 19th day which - as it appears - will be the last day of our Atlantic crossing. We almost made it!!! Winds have slowed down last night and today, giving us a good time window for arrival early Friday rather than in the middle of the night. Neptune was again favourable of us. Along the entire trip, we were blessed with mostly calm winds and comfortable waves and almost no trouble and or squalls. Today, half a day before arrival, Neptune sent us a huge squall, perfect to have a decent boat wash before arrival. Fred tried to shower in it but the rain was not quite made for that amount of washing! We were joking that all it needs now are dolphins and whales - and bang! Dolphins were delivered just a few minutes later. So, what did we do to earn Neptune's blessings? We believe that our "sacrifice" of Vegemite on day 1 did the trick. If you are non-Australian and ever tried it, you would understand why we donated it to the seas. You would also understand why still today, we fear reading about a mysterious mass death of fish and whales around the Canaries happening shortly after our departure. But, as it seems, Neptune indeed is Australian and loves that stuff. So, thank you Australia for the gift of Vegemite to the world! To all skippers around Australia: get this stuff! It is a must-have safety requirement on board (we are confident, it also helps in orca attacks)! We are excited to see land tonight and will share it once we arrive tomorrow. Day 16 - They exist! Today was our squall premiere! After an unpleasant night in which our normal sails were banging most of the time, we pulled up the oxley first thing in the morning. So much better! This also meant, we had to be observant for squalls and today, they actually came! Around midday we were able to avoid the first big one by altering the course but only a few minutes later, the next one hit us. When it was 4 miles away, we quickly took the Oxley down and just 5 minutes later winds increased from 15 knots to 26 knots within seconds! But after a bit of rain (sadly not enough to clean the boat) all was back to normal again. Good for us though to gain some experience with these things. We had a second small one later in the day but now starting into the night, all looks gentle again. We still took the oxley down for the night as the wind forecast (again) expects more wind during the night. Let's see but again, we are rather playing the safe card. Day 15 - The stars The moon is getting less each day and also it only comes up around midnight. Good nights for us to see this abundance of stars all around us. Being so far off civilization, there is practically no light distortion and it really makes the difference. We are enjoying comfortable sailing although wind is expected to pick up during the night. Thus we took down our oxley and give our normal sails another chance. Better safe than sorry. In the absence of fish, we made our first curry today. With all those vegetables that we are still having, it was delicious none the less. We were really worried about the amount of food that we stocked-up. Now that we are getting close, it is safe to say that we have too much food. Luckily, there is a charity on Saint Lucia where we can pass it on to. Day 13 - First of December It feels like we are closing in on our final days towards Saint Lucia. It is getting really hot during the days, making our daily bucket shower a small highlight of the day. Luckily, we also still have a good amount of ice cream that we made of ripe bananas instead of letting them go bad. We are surprised, anyhow, how good many of our vegetables are surviving in this weather. We are still enjoying plenty of fresh produce and did not even think about using any canned or durable food. Healthy sailing! Today also marked 1st December and Lonneke could finally (!!!) open the first Christmas calendar pack. She was soooo excited and happy! Thank you @metznerbosch Sailing these days remains comfortable with calm winds dominating most of our days and nights. We are having 8-10kts of tail wind which our oxley transforms into ~6kts of speed. Every once in a while the wind increases towards 12-13kts which means a speed of 7.5-8kts for us. Amazing how much these small wind differences correlate with our speed! But we are extremely thankful that our choice of a more northern path is giving us these conditions. We are rather sailing a day or two longer in these winds than having to worry about changing sails and stress on our crew and boat. Day 12 - Fishing experiments We started the day with a wonderful rainbow, going fully around to both ends. Perfect motivation to get creative in paperworks with Lonneke. We have a new favorite tool on board: the bucket. Perfect to collect salt water for dish washing, letter paper boats swim and to cool off in a shower! We also had to get creative (or truly desperate) in our fishing gear. We had a tiny bait left after the Blue Marlin bait theft. Apparently, that small thing worked and a large fish bit it today. Too large, the line broke immediately - again. So we are down now to an octopus imitation made of a tube of hand lotion and some metal left overs as weight. Thanks to @sailing_tempus_ for the inspiration! Let's see if we find a semi blind fish going for it. Until then, we have to live with a self-made fish by Lonneke (she asked Mama to make sushi from it). We are still north of the main fleet and winds continue to be more moderate up here. We are not winning any race with our route choice but as it appears, we are having the most relaxed sailing time so far. So for us, this remains to be a good choice. No squalls or seaweed until now. Day 11 - Crew over board!!! We keep experiencing rather light winds on our northern course. While this means that we are not exactly racing towards Saint Lucia, it also means that we are having a relaxed time on board. And while our friends and family back home are experiencing the first snow falls, the air and water here is getting warmer and warmer. Today, this meant: time for a swim!!! We took down all sails and one by one jumped into the Atlantic. What a thrill, knowing that we are as far from land as we could be and have 1000's of meters and wildlife below us! But it was soooo refreshing, bathing in 25°C warm water. We guess, this was not the last dip on this trip! To celebrate yesterday's half time milestone, we started the day with pancakes and the had our next round of steaks for dinner. Cooking works really well on this passage and still, our fresh vegetables are surviving. At this point, the best survivors are apples, pears and lemons, as well as pepper, zucchini, pumpkin and sweet potatoes. The last mangos are planned for the next breakfast, the last bananas were transformed today into ice cream for the days ahead. Day 8 - Steak on Sunday Today we concluded the first week of our crossing and also completed the first 1000 miles. Reasons enough to celebrate this beautiful Sunday with dancing, self-baked bread for breakfast and a perfect medium fried steak for dinner! Celebrating the day with us was a group of dolphins who visited and performed cool stunts for us. And towards this afternoon, trade winds finally picked up. After a few days of slow sailing, we are making some decent speed again! We are now almost on a direct course towards Saint Lucia and we can see the remaining distance dropping on our plotter. Day 6 - Sunny and calm Family day on board of Wolkenschloesschen. While we all enjoyed the calm weather and low winds, Lonneke had lots of fun with her granddad, uncle and great cousins on board. The sailing day was quite uneventful. We made two jibes with the oxley and nothing more. More of these days please! We have passed by Cap Verde and will hopefully soon reach proper trade winds. We are hurrying to use our fresh vegetables as long as they survive. Yummy vegetable and meat soup today. Day 5 - Drone over board!! What a day! What a wonderful day with lots of sunshine and light winds. Perfect to start with a large round of avocado toast with cheese and eggs (Fred's specialty eggs). Also perfect to go fishing again. We first caught a mini Mahi Mahi which we released back to the sea. Nature thanked us with a large catch just 10 minutes later. Lots of work to drag that one in... A large plastic bag! With that many good deeds done, we felt it was time to fly the drone. We made some wonderful shots and then safely hit the drone on the boom and sent it swimming. Drone over board!!! Perfect for us to train our MOB maneuver under oxley. Worked like a charm! Lesson learned though: either get the fishing rod in right (!) away or drive a really large circle... So after securing the drone and its video card (we still hope we can reanimate her some time), Lennart had to go diving to free the prop from 150m dynema fishing line. What a joy, he is the only clean one on board now. He could regain some power though with burgers a la Fred, trying to replicate our grandma's recipe. Yummy! And shortly after sunset: a decent Mahi Magi. Nature is on our side again! Sailing into the night in light winds with our favorite sail. Day 3&4 - Putting a price tag on experience Day 3 started with our third crew member getting sick. With an additional one suffering from sea sickness, our active crew got even smaller. Seems like we picked up Corona shortly before we left Las Palmas. Also, once again, all weather models prove to be wrong. Something we experienced sailing non-stop this season. To some extent, this was luck for us, meaning that we are progressing really well on our direct course. It also meant though that we were quickly cought up in 24kts of wind. With a rope having twisted around our oxley, making it impossible to get it down properly. Thankfully, we have Lennart's dad Andreas on board who is a highly experienced regatta sailor for decades. Together with all our crew - sick or not - and his guidance, we could save the sail and the day. Day 3 was then really choppy and windy and we were dearly missing more sun. We need it for our well-being but since we are mainly solar powered, also to run our equipment. Still, we managed to cook a great pumpkin & vegetable soup to bring everyone back to life. Thankfully on day 4 we are seeing the sun again. The wind is down and we could use that calm period to untangle and hoist the oxley again (yes, we are not giving up that easily). And: all crew members are feeling better again. We are back on track, eating amazing lasagna and enjoying a beautiful sunset. Day 2 - Oxley o'clock Our decision to hoist the Oxley parasail yesterday evening maintained to be a good choice throughout our second day at sea. We had a wonderful sailing day, cruising towards Cape Verde in perfect weather. In these conditions, making real coffee, cooking food and snacks was a delight. If only sailing was always that beautiful!! Given the very light winds at start, we are happy with our first etmal of 143nm. We started noting our daily positions on the Atlantic map 🥳 The field of rally boats is getting a bit more scattered across the area but we still see some of them here and there. We also had a first fish biting but it got free before we could slow down. Next one hopefully tomorrow. We have a lot of ripe mangos and avocados that are waiting to be joined with fish for poke bowls. Am ersten Tag hatten wir starken Oberwind mit Vollgassegeln und 28 Knoten Bootspee auf den #69F. Am zweiten Tag der Americas Cup Challenge auf dem Thunersee gab es eher wenig Wind. Optimal um an den Feinheiten zu arbeiten und Starts und Regatten zu segeln. Denn nur wer bei Leichtwind schnell ist, kann vorne mitfahren. Erstaunlich, wie schnell die Teams zusammengewachsen sind. Bis gestern schien der See noch allein den Wasservögeln und der Linienschifffahrt zu gehören. Zumindest vor Friedrichshafen. Mit dem schönen Wetter kam gestern jedoch alles aufs Wasser, was Schwimmen kann. Und durch die Mittwochsregatta ergab sich vor Friedrichshafen ein wildes Getümmel von Booten. Dazwischen noch Ruderboote, SUPs und ein paar Schwimmer habe ich auch gesehen. Aber wer kann es verdenken. Die Sonne lachte, der Wind war recht konstant und das Wasser hatte eine herrliche Färbung. With the beautiful weather yesterday, however, everything that can swim came onto the water. And due to the Wednesday regatta, there was a wild turmoil of boats in front of Friedrichshafen. In between still rowing boats, SUPs and a few swimmers I have also seen. But who can blame it.
