The Listener, Christopher Lawrence 2023 oil on paper 29.5 x 25 cm #portiageach2023 #shervingallery #portraitpainting @lawrence.christopher Christopher Lawrence is well known as a broadcaster whose encyclopaedic expertise in classical music is matched by infectious passion. His programmes on ABC Classic FM have kept many a painter company during the long hours alone in their studio, while also serving as a constant reminder of what artistic quality is. And because the performance of great music requires the musician to enter the ultimate state of flow, it is an invaluable way to prepare the mind for creative work. After hearing Christopher’s familiar voice for many years, we became friends on an art and music Rhine cruise. He introduced live performances as we floated down the river while I painted a demonstration copy of the beautiful Rembrandt self portrait we would see in the Rijksmuseum. It was then, in 2018, that I thought of painting his portrait, but it wasn’t until this year that I was able to arrange for him to come to the studio. The angle and scale of the head are reminiscent of the Rembrandt, but I was careful not to shroud the ear in shadow, wanting to evoke that sense of alert listening which is the basis of his rare insight and sensitivity to music.

Congratulations to Kate Stevens, winner of the 2023 Portia Geach Memorial Award, the pre-eminent portraiture prize for women in Australia. Kate receives the $30,000 prize for her work The Whistleblower - a moving portrait of David McBride, a military lawyer who served in Afghanistan with Australia’s Special Forces. The winning portrait was one of 374 entries received from female artists across Australia. Kate’s two-panelled work won over the judging panel. They said: “the painting confidently demonstrates the artists painterly skills as well as evident empathy with her subject.” See the winning portrait plus the 56 finalists’ works at S.H. This incredible exhibition will be held at the @shervingallery Sydney from 3rd November until 17th December 2023. Midori Furze is a Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist. Born in Japan, her early years were immersed in the traditions of Japanese culture. She draws Sumi-ink drawings on Japanese paper but Midori is known mostly for her unique origami projects within the community and her incredible installations. Her time is dedicated to teaching adults and children origami which is how I first met Midori many years ago in a paper crane origami workshop. A highly respected teacher, she has been invited to run origami workshops and projects in many places including for the Japanese Embassy. In 2022, she was one of 197 people in the world to be awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation for her contribution towards origami in Sydney and Australia-Japan cultural exchange. She was also awarded by the Consulate General of Japan, Sydney in 2016. Although Midori has made hundreds of thousands of paper cranes I wanted to feature her with just one crane crafted with deep care and respect emerging from the protective palms of the creator awaiting release into the world to symbolise hope and peace. I am super mega thrilled to be selected for the second year in a row in Australia’s most prestigious portraiture prize for female artists: The Portia Geach Memorial Award. My painting of the artist @karleerawkins is near life size at 180cm x 120cm. Her son @raj_zebedee_model , features in the doorway and her faithful dog, Esme, always by her side. My decision to paint the artist Karlee Rawkins was driven by a unique convergence of time and place. Over two decades ago, we embarked on our undergraduate journey together, forging the foundations of our artistic paths. While life led us down different roads, fate has brought us back to the same community once more. In creating this portrait, I sought to capture the essence of Karlee's world—a world illuminated by the gentle, dappled light streaming through the windows of her home in the lush hinterlands of the mid-north coast. This play of light and nature serves as a symbolic representation of her work, which delves into the profound connections between wildlife, nature, and the human psyche. Karlee's life is a harmonious juxtaposition of intelligence, thoughtfulness, and the responsibilities of motherhood. Absolutely thrilled to be selected as a finalist in this years prestigious Portia Geach Memorial Award with my portrait of artist Midori Furze, titled The Paper Crane. This incredible exhibition will be held at the @shervingallery Sydney from 3rd November until 17th December 2023. Midori Furze is a Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist. Born in Japan, her early years were immersed in the traditions of Japanese culture. She draws Sumi-ink drawings on Japanese paper but Midori is known mostly for her unique origami projects within the community and her incredible installations. Her time is dedicated to teaching adults and children origami which is how I first met Midori many years ago in a paper crane origami workshop. A highly respected teacher, she has been invited to run origami workshops and projects in many places including for the Japanese Embassy. In 2022, she was one of 197 people in the world to be awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation for her contribution towards origami in Sydney and Australia-Japan cultural exchange. She was also awarded by the Consulate General of Japan, Sydney in 2016. Although Midori has made hundreds of thousands of paper cranes I wanted to feature her with just one crane crafted with deep care and respect emerging from the protective palms of the creator awaiting release into the world to symbolise hope and peace. Works by Daniel Boyd and Robert Campbell Jnr are included in the touring exhibition 'Art in Conflict' from the collection of the Australian War Memorial opening this Saturday, 29 July at SH Ervin Gallery. Bringing together works from many prominent Australian artists, the exhibition reveals stories both past and present of each artists' response to conflict. Included in the exhibition is this print by Daniel Boyd. Here, Boyd's distinctive 'lenses' are revealed beneath a re-appropriated battle-field drawing by Otho Hewett.
