Rare and beautiful, they're made from painted porcelain cased in 15 carat gold The pendants depict two of the 7 lucky gods of Japan or 'Shichi Fukujin' ('Shichi' meaning seven, 'fuku' meaning luck and 'jin' meaning god) who's origins stem from Indian, Chinese and Japanese folklore. Meiji era, circa 1880. "Hotei is the god of fortune, guardian of children, patron of diviners and barmen, and also the god of popularity. He carries a bag on his shoulders which is loaded with fortunes for those who believe in his virtues. Hotei's traits and virtues are contentment, magnanimity, and happiness. Bishamonten is the god of fortune in war and battles, also associated with authority and dignity. He is the protector of those who follow the rules and behave appropriately. I visited a popular cutlet skewers bar “Shichifukujin” on the B2F of the Osaka-Ekimae Bldg., Umeda. I’ve sometimes visited here since it was in other location. It’s always so busy bcoz it offers various cutlet skewers and appetizers and it’s also comfortable for solo to have those. First, I ordered a mega sized whisky soda and assorted skewers, which is beef, shrimp, garfish, quail egg, lotus root and shishito pepper, and is a better price than ordering those one by one, so it’s suitable for people who try cutlet skewers for the first time. Next, I did oyster and potato. The oyster has a good original richness, and its season is almost over, so u should eat it while u can. The potato used are a variety called “Awakening of the Incas”, which has a so soft and flaky texture and full of sweetness and flavor, so I ordered another one. Next, I ordered mini tomato which is a unique one and tastes good, but if u aren’t careful when eating it, the pulp will burst and burn ur mouth. And I had tuna, croquette and garlic. Eating tuna with ponzu vinegar gave it a refreshing taste, and it was good to have a different taste. The garlic has a good flavor without too strong. And I did onion, rice ball (dried curry taste) and minced meat cutlet. FYI, u can also choose ketchup rice instead of the curry for the rice ball. It has a unique texture and the curry flavor tastes good. Lastly, I had cinnamon sugar apple as a dessert and young corn. The apple will make u happy by spending its sweetness in ur mouth. And the corn has a good crispness. It offers various menus, so it’s difficult to narrow down the menu to just one. The Seven Lucky Gods on a Treasure Ship Doodle that I drew on Mar. 13, 2024 *** I liked the composition of the "Gonin Bayashi" (five musical performers) that I drew last time. I wanted to draw another picture of multiple people gathered together. So I decided drawing the Seven Lucky Gods. In the post about "Gonin Bayashi", I mentioned a characteristics of Japanese culture. It's manifested in the fusion and reconfiguration of different type of things. As an example, I pointed out that "Hina dolls" for the Doll's Festival are culturally jumbled. The Seven Lucky Gods are even more jumbled than that. It's just an assortment of deities that look auspicious. Religiously, they are the deities of Shinto, Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism. It includes not only deities but also a human Zen monk. Their origins vary from Japan, China, and India. The only Japanese deity among them is Ebisu, who holds a sea bream. This is despite the fact that the combination was conceived in Japan. ** It took me some time to draw the seven deities. I had to make several adjustments to composition and coloring before I finished. It might have taken only a moment if the trendy generative AI had drawn them. But for me, the process of drawing is also a pleasure. 👹 Setsubun (節分) 👹 🗣“Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (鬼は外、福は内) - "Demons out! Good fortune in!". This past Saturday we went out looking for Setsubun celebrations! We visited 2 shrines and 1 temples in Fukuoka city, but there were many others that were also having events for this day. During Setsubun, "mamemaki - scattering of soy beans" ceremonies are held; roasted soy beans and mochi are scattered and the participants try to catch them! It is said to bring you good luck, so everyone was really excited. 😆 On the first pictures, you can also see the attendance of Shichifukujin, or the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, at one of the temples! How could RYYG have forgotten to post Benzaiten yesterday?! The only female in the Seven Lucky Gods; again by Iga’s Atarashi Kanji. She’s surrounded by five of Yamada Kazu’s ultra-cool and thoroughly original ‘Dancing Fire’ Shino guinomi new to the gallery today. Each is quite spooky/fabulous and what a treat to drink sake—or anything— out of one. We waited many many months to get these and we also have five yunomi/tea cups that will be posted tomorrow. Sushi Roll Ehō-maki Demons out, Good Fortune in!” For today is Setsubun no Hi (節分の日) February 3rd. Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (鬼は外、福は内). Setsubun is the day before we start again through the journey of the “Nijushisekki (24 solar terms)” or sekki of Japan when we welcome in Risshun 立春 the beginning of Spring. Let’s enjoy Setsubun with Ehō-maki 恵方巻き, On this day there are a few customs in Japan one of them is to eat an uncut makizushi called Ehō-maki 恵方巻, “lucky direction sushi roll” while you sit in silence facing the years lucky direction. The “lucky direction” (恵方) of this year 2024 is east-north-east (東北東). The Ehō-maki must have seven ingredients, these relate to the Seven Lucky Gods (七福神, Shichi Fukujin) from local folklore who are in charge of bringing prosperity in business and good health. As one of my seven ingredients I decided this year I wanted to add the new Organic Marinated Tofu from @dragonfly_foods Their latest tofu is marinated in a blend of tamari, garlic, and ginger. Just remove from the packet and pan fry or oven bake and allow to cool. Slice ready to add some flavour and texture to your sushi roll. Remember to not cut your sushi roll but eat it whole in silence facing the lucky direction of this year east-north-east. Otherwise the good fortune will be lost. Cette année SETSUBUN 節分 👹 est fêté le 3 février au Japon, on célèbre la fin de l’hiver et l’arrivée du printemps (Risshun) selon l’ancien calendrier lunaire 👹 C’est une sorte de nouvelle année des temps anciens, accompagnée de rituels pour purifier le mal de l’année précédente et chasser les mauvais esprits de l’année qui est sur le point de commencer. Depuis des siècles les Japonais pratiquent des rituels afin de chasser les mauvais esprits hors de leur maison. On se rend dans les temples pour prier et souhaiter bonne chance à ses proches et on achète des haricots pour procéder à la cérémonie de Mamemaki, le lancer de haricots. Mamemaki peut se dérouler aussi bien dans les temples qu’à la maison. On choisit le Toshiotoko, la personne dont le signe du zodiaque correspond à celui de l’année en cours ou bien le chef de famille qui va porter un masque de démon 👹 Toute la famille va lui jeter des haricots en criant «oni wa soto ! Fuku wa uchi !» «Dehors les démons ! Dedans la chance !» 🫘 Les haricots qui sont grillés sont ensuite mangés pour apporter de la chance, les enfants mangent le nombre de haricots qui correspond à leur âge, comme souhait de bonne année 🫘 On déguste aussi le eho maki, un Maki à 7 ingrédients, représentant les 7 Divinités de la bonne fortune (Shichifukujin) Ces 7 divinités sont habituellement représentées sur un navire chargé de trésors qui traverse la mer pour apporter bonne fortune et prospérité à tous. On est censé manger le Maki entier sans qu’il soit coupé et sans parler tout en faisant face à la direction chanceuse de l’année. A seven gods walk where it was hard to find the enshrined deities in Meguro. 1) Kakurinji-Bishamonten 2-3) Zuishoji- Hotei. The grounds had a beautiful new building as well, well groomed. But that’s a Jizo. 4-5) Myoenji-Jurojin and Fukurokuju. A funky little spot at the bottom of a hill. 6) Daienji-Daikokushin. On the side of the Meguro hill, love that melting buddha. 7-9) Banryuji -Benzaiten. Across the river. With a little cave. 10) Ryusenji-Ebisu! Shichifukujin七福神 Tal y como indican los kanjis que conforman el nombre, “shichi” significa siete, número muy presente en la tradición japonesa (virtudes del samurai, dia en el que se celebran los nacimientos, etc); “fuku” hace referencia a la suerte o buena fortuna y el kanji de “jin” es el de Dios/Diosa, por lo que juntos significan “los siete dioses de la buena suerte”. El número de integrantes se fijó en el s.XVII y está compuesto por deidades de distintos orígenes. La única deidad típicamente japonesa sintoísta es Ebisu. Las eeidades Hotei, Jurōjin y Fukurokuju provienen de las tradiciones budistas y taoístas chinas, mientras que Daikokuten, Bishamonten y Benzaiten tienen sus orígenes en la tradición hindú. Let’s meet the Seven Lucky Gods!! God Number Seven. Name: Jurojin. 寿老人 Virtue: Longevity. Origin: Buddhism and Taoism. China. Occupation: God of longevity and good health. Patron of the elderly. Cures illnesses. Promotes peaches. Super senior. Jurojin is the oldest god out of the group. He is sometimes confused with Fukurokuju. Some accounts say Jurojin is Fukurokuju’s grandfather; other accounts say they are twins. The two deities are similar in that they both have bald, elongated heads; long white beards; walk with staffs and carry scrolls. In Jurojin’s case, his scroll contains the lifespan of all living things. The older god is also accompanied by animals representing long life such as the crane, tortoise, and especially the deer which he is fond of riding. Jurojin is often seen holding a peach or sitting under a peach tree. According to Chinese Taoist beliefs, the juicy delicious peach - fruit of the gods - helps with longevity.
