Sus paladas, precisas y fluídas como el agua. El río, su lugar de comfort. Alberto Demiddi nació un día como hoy, en 1944, en la Capital Federal (Buenos Aires). A los cuatro años se mudó con sus padres a Rosario (provincia de Santa Fe), en la márgen derecha del río Paraná. En su infancia, probó varios deportes como la natación. Sin embargo, en su adolescencia, agarró los palos de remo para más nunca soltarlos. Bajo la bandera del "Club de Regatas Rosario", el Paraná vio a Demiddi forjar su historia. Se especializó en la modalidad "single scull" (bote de competición manejado por un solo remero) y fue el mejor de su época. Ganó el campeonato argentino de forma consecutiva entre 1962 y 1973; cuatro Sudamericanos (1964, 1965, 1968 y 1970); dos Panamericanos (Canadá 1967 y Colombia 1971) campeón europeo (1969 y 1971), primer puesto en la Real Regata de Henley en 1971 y el Campeonato Mundial de 1970 en territorio canadiense. Logró casi todo, a excepción de su título más buscado: la medalla de oro de los Juegos Olímpicos. Tokio 1964 fue su primer Juego, donde quedó cuarto, luego mejoró en México 1968, obteniendo la medalla de bronce. Su último intento fue Munich 1972. Era el favorito de la prueba, pero Yury Malishev de la Unión Soviética hizo pedazos su sueño olímpico. Un frustrado Demiddi se tuvo que conformar con la presea de plata. "Tu debiste haber ganado" le dijo el soviético. Dos años después de este sabor amargo de su vida, "La Máquina" abandonó el remo para ser entrenador del "Club Regatas La Marina", en la localidad bonaerense de Tigre. El 25 de octubre de 2000, producto de un cáncer de estómago, el gran Alberto Demiddi falleció a los 56 años en San Fernando (Buenos Aires). En noviembre de 2003, la Cámara de Diputados declaró el 11 de abril como "Día del Remero" en nuestro país. Merecido reconocimiento para el máximo símbolo de este deporte.

Obviously we are an ‘oars width’ from the worlds most famous stretch of boating heritage but this belongs to the grandfather of two of our wonderful team. Sadly Oscar and Archie’s grandfather passed away last year and had his crown jewel mounted at home. After speaking to his daughter Claire, she thought that it would be perfect to add to the Little Angel, his favourite pub for many years. Not only that, Claire’s Grandfather had his final drink at that very spot 35 years ago before passing away after a heart attack.
