“Big Blue.” The Blue Whale is notably the largest animal to ever grace our earth, including dinosaurs! These gentle giants are gigantic, generally ranging in length from 80 to 100 feet (24 to 30 meters). They can also weigh as much as 30 African Elephants! Their average weight is 200,000 to 300,000 pounds or about 100 to 150?tons! . The blue whale’s heart is huge weighing about 400 pounds (180 kilograms). This weight can be compared to a gorilla and roughly the size of a bumper car! As these whales dive to feed, its heart may only beat twice per minute. They also have incredibly large tongues (the size of an elephant). . Blue Whales are also very loud! In fact, they are the loudest animals on the planet. “A jet engine registers at 140 decibels; the call of a blue whale reaches 180. Ravens and crows are part of the corvid bird family though Ravens are found to be more intelligent. The corvid family have been known to “craft and use tools, plan for the future, barter, and even play games like hide-and-seek.” . Ravens are excellent hunters known to kill prey twice their size and they play hide-and-seek with their food if another raven may be watching! . Ravens are able to mimic human voices as well as other animal and bird noises. Found in the tropical and temperate waters of the world’s oceans, octopus are considered the most intelligent of all invertebrates! Growing to about 4.3 feet in length and weighing up to 22 pounds (although averages are much smaller), they will prey on crabs, crayfish, and mollusks. They may use an ink to disorient their victims before attacking or to thwart off predators. . They can propel themselves quickly by using their “mantles” and their super-soft bodies allow them to fit through the tiniest of cracks! They have beaks which are the only hard part of their bodies which can yield nasty bites, but are typically used to subdue their prey! (Source: National Geographic) . It’s been my privilege this year to work on so many beautiful animals. Being able to show my work and receive recognition more fully completes my mission of extending awareness about so many fragile creatures in this world. . Next year I am going to further vest my time with an organization called @artistsforconservation and continue my plight of striking deeper connections between the animals I create and those who see them. I will continue to raise awareness, educate and support various conservation efforts. I will also be working on a series of 8” x 8’s reflecting 50 small portraits of endangered animals, one representing each state in the US. I’m also hoping to book Gallery Showings in both (NY & Chicago) and very exciting news, will be working on illustrating my first set of children’s books! . In between, I teach and will be accepting commissions! I’m trying to find a balance managing so much social media and have thought about starting a blog for all my followers!
