Seeing the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit at the @royalbcmuseum was so much more powerful than looking at the images online. I spent literally hours reading the captions and looking deeply at each image. Last weekend was “Slow Art Day” where everyone is encouraged to spend at least 10 minutes enjoying and thinking about one piece of art. It’s something we don’t do very often in our fast paced, scroll-happy world. I had a brilliant day and really felt the impact of all of the images in the collection. Thank you to everyone who participated in Slow Art Day! 🐢🐌 Did you know the average person spends just 27 seconds looking at a work of art? This past Saturday, we challenged participants to spend a leisurely 10 minutes with three artworks to experience the pleasure of observing and appreciating art for themselves. Surprisingly, this act of slowing down didn't just allow for seeing more; it also brought the joy of uncovering more. What may seem like a potentially dull activity actually has quite the opposite effect. Interestingly, we found that once people slow down and begin to look, it triggers a curiosity to want to learn more. Preparing material for carpet weaving takes a lot of time and effort. I like to feel a certain "emptiness" in my head during the monotonous work of cutting strips of clothes. When is the last time you have really engaged with art? Maybe you stopped to stare at a public mural in your city, visited a museum or took the time to sit quietly with a painting on the wall of your own home (I do this regularly). Too often we see art as simply an enhancement or “finishing touch” that completes the decor of a room. While that is a partial reality, I believe there is so much more we can glean. “Art invites audiences to consider the spirituality and transformative power of images. Engaging art offers respite, contemplation, even as it shares powerful, inspiring, or difficult stories. Art images are real and alive and have the power to change us and cause change.… They can shift our perspective on what we thought we knew and understood about a subject. Too often, art is considered decorative, and it is significantly more than that. Engaging with art means we have to slow down to allow a new experience to enter which perhaps cannot be accessed in another way. It can be an expansive experience.” (- Lourdes Bernard, folk artist) On Saturday, I had the great pleasure of being invited to participate in NC’s first (and only, so far) recognition of International Slow Art Day, an event that began in 2010 in Europe. It has crossed the pond into the U.S., and seems to be spreading slooooowly, probably because of our American propensity toward speed and efficiency. And my hesitancy to join in is evidence of my own indoctrination into this mindset. The group sat with 4 paintings (mine being one of them) for 10 minutes each and that time did NOT fly by for me, which was an interesting personal observation in and of itself. After the viewings, we gathered so each artist could talk a little bit about their own painting and the open up the floor for a short discussion/Q & A time. I came away with more than I gave, to be sure. Thanks to DBDA Design Committee for sponsoring, Jeanine Dibble for opening up her studio space (Art by J) and moderating the discussions, @pamelaunderwoodart and @mart704 for co-chairing. Also, for the other accomplished artists pictured, @carolsnne03 and James Norman, whose work is simply beautiful.

E’ stato un viaggio, come lo era in passato, tra arte e vissuti personali, dove le trame di ognuno si sono tessute con quelle degli altri in un continuo rimando di letture. E da qui si riparte! On April 13th, The Gorgas House Museum hosted The Blue Bead Project for this year's @SlowArtDay! University of Alabama (@univofalabama) students in Dr. Sharony Green's History classes were inspired by a blue bead (dating back to the antebellum period) that was excavated behind the @GorgasHouse and created art projects that were on display inside the museum. Blue beads, and others like them, are often associated with enslaved people. The Blue Bead Project offered visitors the opportunity to make their own art, in the form of a bead bracelet, and encouraged them to think about the person who owned a bead found behind this dwelling before the Civil War.

The process involved acrylic paints and several cyanotype sessions in the sun including making a painted glue stencil piece to create a stormy lightning effect throughout the background. Met some great people including archaeologist who believes the bohemian blue bead entered States via Pacific Northwest & ended up in Tuscaloosa via an indigenous trade network. Amazingly, another scholar & I both saw 1840s & post 1840s as arrival time. We want 2 do some collaborative work. Great seeing a former student whose embroidered work was on display. Meanwhile, new coach has some supporters alright. PS So, how the bead —that likely came to campus via an indigenous person who participating in a trade network — ended up in the outdoor cooking area by Gorgas House remains a mystery. From the initial pencil sketches to the final art piece, let’s explore the transition from conception to creation. — #VarleyCloseUp - 🖼️F. H. Varley, 𝙎𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚, c. 1929 🖼️F. H. Varley, 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙎𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚, c. 1929 - | About the Artwork | In 1926, Varley began teaching at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts (now Emily Carr University of Art + Design). Immersed in the captivating landscapes of British Columbia, his art underwent a profound transformation. - On his arrival, Varley was immediately struck by the dramatic landscape of western Canada. He worked outdoors, hiking and camping in the mountains in search of inspiration. This new engagement with the land radically changed Varley’s approach to depicting the landscape. - He began to experiment and sketch. The rivers and mountains in his work became more abstract and fluid. He moved away from representing the landscape in its entirety, focusing instead on specific elements, such as a rocky outcrop or mist-covered line of trees. - 𝙎𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 is a mesmerizing depiction of a wintry scene, likely inspired by Grouse Mountain, a place “full of fantastic forms, wind carved & polished, where one can bathe in prismatic colours, incredibly pure” (Varley, 1929). Using shades of blue, lilac, and jade, he brought to life the soft, organic forms of snow accumulating after a flurry. - When examining the sketch 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙎𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚, we can see that Varley imposes anthropomorphic qualities onto the landscape; the mantle of snow has been made to resemble human forms. While somewhat ambiguous in the watercolour, these forms and features are more distinct in the sketch.

It’s Slow Art Day! A day focused on making time for ourselves to observe and reflect with intention. Slow Art Day celebrates slow looking in an expanded way - and can include places and spaces outside museum contexts, whether they are, say a tree, a flower, or a garden. These pages are from a Field Trip guide we created with @monument_lab and focus on slowing down looking with intention at a public monument. They are design for ANY kind of monument you may encounter - whether that’s a traditional sculpture, or perhaps a mural, an ephemeral work of political art, or something else entirely. Slow looking can reward us with a sense of calm, a deeper understanding of what we are observing; it can inspire curiosity and foster creativity; it can make us more attuned and alert. These pages focus on getting to know the chosen monument through a process of reflection and drawing - and invite both introspective and extrospective observations - to encourage understanding our own positions in connection to the work, our own biases, and a place based understanding of how this monument shapes and is shaped by its surroundings. These pages are part of a longer set of exercises that expand from these observations- exploring histories, commissioning and labor, power, and ways to envision the monument anew after digging deep and thinking about what we are looking at. Slow looking and slow art can be the beginning of profound discovery.
