My anticipation for @belgianwaffleride Arizona was preeetty flippin high! I had registered for the race back in October, bought flights in November, even planned a little vacation around it (Thanks @av723 & @_derekjs for being so cool with me setting up shop down here) and while the North Dakota winter has been admittedly mild, it was hard to not get excited about visiting Arizona in Feb/March. I was in somewhat new territory, ramping the winter training volume up quite a bit for such a big race so early in the year, and I didn't fully know what I was even getting myself into. Maybe it's just my relative inexperience with bike racing, or just long, lonely weeks on the indoor trainer leading to delusion, but personally I find grand expectations tend to creep their way in, getting the wild idea that I'm somehow going to be fighting for a top result. (through sheer willpower perhaps?) Well, this race was a proper slap to the face (and legs, lower back, neck, arms, shoulders, lungs, etc.) getting dropped only 3 miles in and like so many others on the day, failing to keep the rubber side down. I had a ton of fun catching people on the trails/singletrack though, and interacting with a few pros before and during the race, and riding through some gorgeous landscapes. I definitely came away having learned a lot, and reminding myself I'm still just doing this for fun and to stop comparing myself to those getting paid to do it!
