I interrupt my regularly scheduled PNW love fest in order to bring you this spectacular VIEW!!!! Please be patient as I gush about this beautiful spot for a moment. Though I hail from Cali originally, I am by far a lover of the Pacific Northwest. There are places all over this world that must be enjoyed and highlighted though, and this is one of them!!! Stinson Beach, and the hairpin road that you take to get there, is an amazing little slice of Northern California!!!! I am certain I have been here before, likely riding in the motor home over these insane hills and through these concerning turns, but I do not remember it. Venturing there this weekend felt like a fresh exploration. I loved it, I loved it, I loved it! Not only were the people (my amazing family, @meg_horrigan) delightful, but the scenery was spectacular, the waves were splendid, the ocean water was warm-ish, and the sun was streaming allllll weekend! When we asked the boys what they wanted to do first when we got to California, they immediately said, "Go to the beach!" Donovan remembered finding shells and crab parts at Stinson Beach, so that's where we went. We didn't realize it was spring break in the area! 🤣🤦🏼♀️ Even though we weren't expecting a crowd on a Thursday, we still had a great time ❤️ Grandma was prepared for the trip with buckets and sand toys. The boys also loved just standing in the waves. It was a great start to our visit. I'm so grateful that I've been able to show my boys where I grew up and to watch their relationship with my parents grow stronger.
The @marinhistorymuseum just shared an old look at our old building from 1940! In 1870, the first road to Stinson Beach was built along the Pacific coast from the town of Sausalito. With the road access, tent camps were built along the willow trees at the beach and named Willow Camp, the town’s original name. When the Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway opened in 1896, tourists could ride the train to West Point Inn and then walk or rent a stagecoach to take them down to the beach. The San Francisco earthquake in 1906 brought refugees to the area and some of the area’s first businesses sprung up including the Airey’s Hotel. In 1916, the town became officially Stinson Beach in honor of Nathan Stinson, the largest landowner, who first purchased land in 1866. The opening of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937 brought more tourists taking day trips from the Bay Area. The beach was sold in 1939 to Marin County and ownership was transferred to the State of California in 1950. After World War II, the area saw an increase of full-time residents who moved there after developers built subdivisions. In 1977, the beach was transferred to the National Park Service. Join us in the continued fight to protect the California Coastal Act! The good news is that great progress has been made in protecting the Coastal Act thanks to coastal advocacy by EAC, Surfrider, and many other NGOs. SB 951, SB 1077, and SB 1092 have had each of their Coastal Act weakening provisions removed in committee. But we are still watching the bills. One more bill unnecessarily exempts development from the Coastal Act: AB 2560. https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB2560 EAC is leading the fight to oppose this bill. We submitted a sign-on letter to the Housing Committee opposing this bill unless it is amended. EAC’s Legislative Fellow, Chris Mouawad, spoke in opposition at the hearing on the 10th. Unfortunately, the bill was moved out of the housing committee. On April 16th, we submitted another sign-on letter with 30 NGOs to the Assembly Natural Resources Committee. This trend of curtailing the Coastal Commission’s regulatory power (and pushing for deregulation) could have significant consequences, like increased costs, delays, and reduced proposals for housing development due to regulatory constraints. It’s essential to recognize the delicate balance between housing initiatives and coastal preservation efforts, as blanket exemptions to the Coastal Act harm the environment, public access guarantees, and infrastructure. The Coastal Commission is an ally, not an obstacle. The Coastal Commission generally supports affordable housing, coastal.ca.gov/Housing We would like to see more effective solutions for housing in CA’s coastal zone that uphold our bedrock coastal access and resource protection law. A better approach to these issues would be to restore the Commission’s previous authority to enact affordable housing policy, which was previously stripped. One way to ensure our watersheds are clean and healthy is to collect water quality samples.
