Nr. #2 The first time I heard of the layering technique I was in India on my first street photography trip with 7 amazing photographers and I was in awe what one can create in a picture. Really this blew my mind. It is also know that the layering technique is the most challenging art to master. During our first assignment around the Hoàn Kiếm Lake (Sword Lake) where we walk up and down to explored scenes, moments, people, color, etc. that’s when I notices the corner of portrait artists. 👨🎨 In this picture I played with the layering technique. I felt somewhat comfortable with this scene as I knew what I wanted to capture and I had time to explore different angles to capture how one portrait is being create in real time. Yesterday I took a massive step outside my comfort zone by attending @streetwithmatt's Dublin Street Photography workshop. We took things back to basic and just played on some of the busiest streets of Dublin. Play is something that often gets forgotten in the midst of a busy wedding day so it's good to shoot with no expectations and just have fun with the camera. I used to organise street photography travel trips. There’d be 8-12 of us, a lot of the same people but always some new faces too, and we’ve been to India, Colombia, Barcelona, Milan. The Power of Waiting - Cartagena, Colombia 2018 One of my best tips for street photography is to 'slow down'. This photo is one of my best examples of where slowing down and being patience really paid off! During a wander south of the historic walled city of Cartagena, we came across the little square with streets filled with colour. Down one of these streets, was a red house with blue shutters that I was instantly drawn too. The light on the pavement and shadow on the wall was a great opportunity for an interesting subject to be lit against the darker background. I had my composition ready and so I waited. After 20 minutes I had dozens of photos of different people passing by and I thought maybe it was time to move on. BUT as I was walking away I saw this red balloon slowly blowing along the street in the breeze in the opposite direction, the direction of the red house! Might it happen?? I rushed back to my spot and waited. As the balloon approached, I saw this woman, who had been selling hats to tourists, heading our way. Might they arrive at the same time??!! I waited in anticipation. The Kindness of Strangers - Medellin, Colombia 2018. While wandering the streets of Communa 1 in Medellin we were caught in a rainstorm. As we tried to figure out where the nearest cafe was, up the street this lady started waving and shouting us over. She kindly invited us to shelter on her porch where her family were playing the board game Parqués (very popular in Colombia). During our street photography trip, we encounter Colombian hospitality on numerous occasions. It's a fantastic country if you ever get the chance to visit. Waiting for the rain to stop I was able to practice my layering skills. Sunrise overlooking the Himalayas in Nepal (2019) One of the many things that makes Nepal special is its stunning landscape, from its jungles in the south to the snow covered peaks of the Himalayas in the North. While in Pokhara, @streetwithcori and I got the opportunity to witness one of the most incredible sunrises in the world. As we reached the top of the hill, a short journey from Pokhara, I was a little disappointed at the size of the crowd that had gathered. It turns out it’s a popular spot at 5:30am. It was soon revealed to us why. At first all we could see was a dark mist, but then the enormous outlines of the mountains began to appear out of the gloom. Then, before we could see the sun, its light strikes the highest peak. At this moment there’s an excited wooooo from the crowd. But this is followed by a long silence as we’re all hit by the sheer beauty and magnificence of what we’re witnessing. It felt like time slowed down. You may notice that none of these photos illustrate what I have described with the sun sticking the tip of the peak and then moving down its slopes. This is because at the time my camera was not in my hands but instead resting by my side. Cameras are a powerful tool for capturing moments, which you can enjoy in the future, but they also to some extent separate you from that moment. I’d decided that this moment - standing with my fiancé on top of the world, I wanted to enjoy to its fullest. A Meat Market in Kolkata, India (2017) This was probably my proudest layering photo from our India trip. Layering is a great technique for showing multiple stories in a single frame. After several micro tweaks to my composition, I was able to line everyone up and this was the result. When shooting street in markets I'm always aware that this is people's place of work and so my priority is always to ensure I don't get in their way (no matter how great a photo I might be missing). This is partly why I was focused on these men who were on their break. It is believed to bring together estranged relatives and improve fortunes. We found out about the festival thanks to local photographer Bhishma Thapa - check out his amazing work at @street_people_art @streetwithcori and I arrived at 5 AM to witness people offering prayers by bathing in the freezing cold Hanumante River. The dedication was impressive. During the festival, some women fast for the entire month having only one meal a day and families read daily stories from the religious book 'Swasthani' including mythical tales about the creation of the world, Hindu deities, and demons. After taking a holy bath in the freezing river, people warm themselves and dry their clothes on big hay bonfires. Behind the Scenes of our 2017 India Street Adventure This morning Facebook memories reminded me of the amazing experience I had 3 years ago in India. After a little time reminiscing I wanted to give a shoutout to my awesome travel buddies. I’ve always been a big believer that when it comes to positive experiences, although locations can have an impact, it’s really people that make it. So when Anna and I met up to plan the India street photography trip, one of the biggest challenges was who to invite. We knew the experience would be intense and we’d spend a lot of time crammed together (from bunk beds in hostels to night train cabins and rickety tuk-tuks). So we needed people who would see the funny side of the ridiculous as well as get on with everyone else and share in our passion for travel and photography. Looking back, I couldn’t have asked for a better group – a range of different characters that gelled together so well @annapumerphotography @anjap @alexbeckettphoto @carlabancphotography @alakija @johnnydent @andrew_hellmich One of the best parts of doing these trips as a group is what you stand to learn from each other. With such a talented set of photographers, with different experiences and skillsets, there was a ton to share and learn from. During lunch and evening breaks we routinely swap around cameras to see how others had seen things differently. We also ran some mini critiques on how photos could be improved next time. These exercises were gold. Looking back through how my work developed from New Delhi, through Jodhpur, Kolkata and finally Varanasi I can clearly see the impact the group had on my work. The train tracks running into New Delhi are bustling with so much life, colours and stories. I have dozens of frames from this scene and it took me ages to pick a favourite.
