It's my first official Mother's Day! Hooray! It can be a challenge having this little guy at work with me all the time, but it's so worth it to share that time together. I don't know what I'm doing today, as I scheduled this post in advance, and don't usually do them on weekends, but it felt appropriate to celebrate since it was such a major life change affecting the business. It also felt right to share this 100+ year old print we got to remat and clean up recently titled "The Young Mother." I'm so fortunate to have my own mother volunteer to come to the shop with me most days and we take turns holding Damian, but the day I was working on this mother piece, I was alone, baby in the wrap, just as you see pictured, pondering this grand new role I saw reflected in the artwork before me. Oh man, was framing this photo a treat! My customer had this old photo saved of her dad when he was serving in the south pacific during WW2. They were very limited on what they could say and share regarding where and what they were doing, so everything they mailed out had to be approved. This was just vague enough to get the stamp of approval, as seen on the back. We wanted to be able to see both sides and stand it up rather than hang it, so we picked out matting based on the front as well as the back, did a nonadhesive mount sandwiched between the mat windows with a paper thin spacer, and then glazed both sides. I cleaned up the back with a black mat to match the frame, and installed our favorite metal standup hardware to the bottom rail for visibility and durability. @803labs_printing did a great job digitally restoring and reprinting this old WW1 era military photo. My client brought the original photograph along with the reproduction in for preservation. We decided to put the original between rag mats behind the new one so it is flat and safe.
