Surfactants are a broad group of ingredients which essentially alter the way oil and water molecules interact. In cosmetics, surfactants are responsible for the foam and bubbles in products, as well as emulsifying oil and water-based ingredients together! (Emulsify is a fancy word for making a mixture that won’t separate) You will see sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI) on our body scrub and shampoo ingredient labels, but don’t worry; this isn’t a scary ingredient. Sodium cocoyl isethionate is a surfactant made from all vegetable-based and renewable resources, primarily coconuts. Solid Hair Shampoo Bars: A Love-Hate Relationship, a short story from the Midnight Garden; They are irritating to make with expensive ingredients and it’s my opinion that more than a normal amount goes down the drain during the process. The bars consist of three separate mixtures: a gentle surfactant (SCI) & a bubble booster (CAPB); a conditioner (BTMS) & Cocoa Butter; and aloe extract, DL-Panthenol (aka Vitamin B5), & sodium lactate (a salt compound). Finally essential oils or fragrance is added, and a preservative (I use Leucidal Liquid, a natural compound that originates from mushrooms). The first mixture is heated in a double boiler until it becomes a waxy-feeling paste which never fully melts. Then the next mixtures are added. Once it begins cooling, it turns to a crumbly texture that you must press or smush into a mold. That is all the very irritating, quirky, persnickety part of it. Now for the love: all ingredients are plant-derived and there’s no waste of a plastic bottle. I choose to go with the all-natural preservative. Since I have fine, thin hair that is medium length, the bars can potentially last me on the order of months. You only need to barely touch the bar to wet hair around the scalp, and it will gently cleanse without damaging the hair. There is no chemical residue. They are just a fantastic invention that makes me never want to go back to commercial shampoo. It’s Ingredient Talk Tuesday!! ✨ Today’s ingredient feature is all about micas! We use a wide variety of colorants here at Green Daisy, but our most used colorant is called mica. Most mica used in cosmetics and soap, begins with the naturally occurring mineral that is ground to a fine powder. (It’s basically rock powder!) This mica powder is usually grayish in color until it is then coated with pigments. So, the colored micas that we use are comprised of mica (directly from the ground) blended with lab-created pigments. Lab-created pigments are used to avoid the unhealthy levels of lead, arsenic and mercury that mined pigments contain.🌍 They’re healthier for you and the Earth! The micas we use come from a supplier (Heyy Mad Micas! ❤️) that has strong commitment to social responsibility and ethical business practices. So I’ve been wanting to share a little side hustle of mine when I’m not at work. I make soaps! Yup and I sell them at my shop!
