Malabar pit viper (Craspedocephalus malabaricus) Having photographed a bunch of pit vipers now, I always try and find a new angle to show a different side of these creatures. These snakes are passive hunters, latching on to a branch and waiting for prey to pass by. The roots of a tree on a dried up river make the perfect spot to bask and wait for food. If you get closer, you see why they're called pit vipers. Heat sensing pits near their eyes help them generate a thermal image of their environment, picking up temperature differences to about 0.001°C sometimes. Do you know how to tell the difference between a Cane Toad (Rhinella marina) and a native frog? What about a tadpole and a ‘toadpole’? Cane toads: 🚨 Cane toads begin their life in long, jelly-like strings called clutches (see picture 1). Each clutch can contain between 8,000 and 35,000 eggs and females may lay up to 2 clutches per year – that’s up to 70,000 baby toads per breeding female, per year 🤯. 🚨 Cane toad tadpoles are shiny black on top and have an opaque dark bluish grey or black sheen to their belly. They have an oval shaped body, are pointed at the snout and are often broad across the gills. They have opaque nostrils and a short tail that appears thin due to a transparent frill with no spots, patterns, or colour. They are approximately 30mm in length. Native frogs: 🐸 There are over 240 species of native frog in Australia, and many begin life in lumps of jelly or foam in water among vegetation, but some prefer to lay their eggs in trees or on land. Frog egg clutches are typically much smaller than that of toads, ranging from just 16 eggs for the Corroboree Frog to nearly 4000 for the Bleating Tree Frog, for example. 🐸 Eggs and tadpoles vary in appearance depending on the species, as do incubation/hatching times. Native frog tadpoles are a variety of shapes and sizes, often larger than Cane toad tadpoles. Some species, such as the Spotted Marsh Frog tadpole, can look similar to Cane Toad tadpoles, so please don’t ID on colour alone. Standing behind waterfalls — Silver Falls State Park in the rain 🌧️💧🌲 What I thought was going to be a 15-30 minute walk through the park actually turned out to be more than 3 hours, 8 mile hike up and down hills. All while getting blasted by the rain. Which was worth it because when it’s raining, no one is really here and I got this popular park to myself for the most part. This another hike that has been in my list for years and finally gone to it but what makes this place special is that this place has multiple huge waterfalls you can behind. You won’t be dry standing behind some of them though. Then, they are all in one big loop. Meaning that, you could just keep hiking straight on the trail the entire time and you would end up at the parking lot again without ever turning around. As a matter of fact, the previous post’s Rufous Tailed Jacamar was taken in this area.
