Antique early-19th Century Exceptional Swiss 18k gold & enamel snuff box, of rectangular form with canted corners, the cover is set with a finely painted panel depicting a queen (possibly Dido Queen of Carthage), wearing a laurel crown in a sumptuous ermine cloak with a dagger in her hand. The story was probably written between 1587 and 1593, and was first published in 1594. The story focuses on the classical figure of Dido, the Queen of Carthage. It tells an intense dramatic tale of Dido and her fanatical love for Aeneas (induced by Cupid), Aeneas’ betrayal of her and her eventual suicide on his departure for Italy. The enamel plaque is within a leaf and frame, bottom decorated with translucent blue enamel over hexogon shaped engine-turning, the side with similar lozenge shaped enamel panels. Hallmarked with a makers mark for Rémond, Lamy & Cie, (active in Geneva, 1801-1804, very important Swiss goldsmiths), with later Russian and French import marks. Jean-Georges Rémond was born in France on July 27, 1752. Forced into exile by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, his family took refuge in the German city of Hanau which soon became one of the largest production centers of goldsmithery in Europe in the second half of the 18th century. Accessoire très « prisé » de l’aristocratie de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, la fonction première de la tabatière est de conserver le tabac mais aussi d’être admirée. C’est en effet un véritable marqueur social attestant de la richesse et du raffinement de son propriétaire. Ces artefacts précieux sont réalisés par des orfèvres spécialisés dans la création de menus objets, les plus recherchés étant les artisans parisiens comme Adrien Vachette, Jean Ducrollay, Louis Roucel, Etienne Nitot ou Joseph Etienne Blerzy. Installé sur le Pont au Change à l’enseigne «A la ville de Leipzig, le bijou d’or », ce dernier est considéré comme l’un des meilleurs orfèvres de son temps. En témoigne sa présence de l’Almanach Dauphin de 1776 répertoriant les meilleurs artisans, artistes et commerçants du royaume. Notre écrin porte deux fois son poinçon de Maître. Chef d’œuvre de technique, il associe l’excellence de l’orfèvrerie, des émaux et de la joaillerie avec l’adjonction de perles fines délicatement serties. A la fois tabatière et boîte à portrait, la préciosité de l’objet tient aussi à la finesse de la miniature qui orne son couvercle. Elle porte la signature du peintre suédois Pierre Adolphe Hall, surnommé par Diderot « le Van Dyck de miniature ». Parti à Paris pour parfaire son art sous la protection d’Alexandre Roslin, il devient agréé à l’Académie Royale en 1769 avant d’être nommé peintre du Cabinet du roi et des enfants de France. Antique late-18th Century Exceptional German 18k gold & enamel snuff box, of oval shape, the lid inset with an oval beautifully hand painted miniature depicting Marie Antoinette (born Maria Antonia Josepha Joanna von Österreich-Lothringen; November 2, 1755 – October 16, 1793) was the queen of France, executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. She is most known for supposedly saying “Let them eat cake”, She was reviled by the French public for her lavish spending. Until her death, she supported the monarchy against reforms and against the French Revolution. The rare miniature is surrounded by a intertwining green boarder inset with white beads, the lids rim set with pearls. The ground enamelled in translucent radiant blue over engine turned ground, sides engraved and enamelled. Our client’s important and rare, French Louis XVI period 22K gold snuff box encrusted with 250 diamonds features grisaille work attributed to Charles-Jacques de Mailly (1740-1817). 8.7 x 5.7 x 4.1 cm, 3.4 x 2.25 x 1.6 in. (Price upon request.) This rectangular box with beveled corners is painted on all sides with polychrome bouquets of blooming flowers on a green ground, with oval cartouches with fine miniature en grisaille paintings in the manner of François Boucher (1703-1770). The lid depicts “L’Amour sacrifiant à l’Amitié”, a scene from “Suite d’estampes”, from the suite of prints engraved by Madame la Marquise de Pompadour after the engravings by Jacques Guay, engraver to the King. Putti playing instruments and forging love arrows decorate the sides. Flanges depict putti in allegories of the four seasons. The base with a scene at the altar of love. Finely crafted from two-color gold with volutes, garlands and rocailles, with fluted pilasters on the beveled corners. Exquisite diamonds are arranged in wavy gold bands across the lid. Charles-Jacques de Mailly exhibited in Paris as early as 1771 and is known to have worked in Saint Petersburg. In 1793 he exhibited at the Paris Salon. Das Wort Miniatur „kleines Bild“ kam im 17. Jahrhundert aus dem Italienischen ins Deutsche. Das italienische Wort miniatura bedeutete ursprünglich „mit Zinnoberrot Gemaltes“ und geht zurück auf mittellateinisch miniāre „mit Zinnoberrot schreiben“, das sich von lateinisch minium „Zinnober“ ableitet. Im Mittelalter war es üblich, in Handschriften, die überwiegend in Klöstern hergestellt wurden, den ersten Buchstaben eines Satzes oder Absatzes in Zinnoberrot zu schreiben. Zusätzlich wurden oft rund um die Initialen Ornamente und kleine Bilder gemalt. Auch als der Buchdruck die Handschriften ablöste, hielt sich diese farbliche Gestaltung von Texten noch einige Jahrzehnte. Mit der Zeit verschob sich so die Bedeutung von italienisch miniare „mit Zinnoberrot malen“ hin zu „kleine Bilder malen“. Auch beförderte die Ähnlichkeit zwischen den beiden italienischen Worten miniare und minore „kleiner“ diese Entwicklung. Und natürlich veränderte dies auch die Bedeutung von miniatura hin zu „kleines gemaltes Bild“. Als sich das Mittelalter dem Ende zuneigte, finden sich Miniaturen nicht mehr nur in Handschriften und Büchern. Im 16. Jahrhundert wird es modern, kleine Porträts auf Elfenbein malen zu lassen. Diese Porträts nannten die Menschen ebenfalls Miniatur „kleines Bild“. Durch das handliche Format war es nun möglich, Bilder in Taschen oder Medaillons mitzuführen. In einer Zeit, in der es noch keine Fotos gab, war dies die einzige Möglichkeit, von einem geliebten Menschen oder von der Familie auch unterwegs ein Bild bei sich zu haben. Als die Maler die Technik verfeinerten, waren es nicht mehr nur Porträts, die als Miniatur gemalt wurden. Nun erhielten auch Gegenstände wie Dosen, Tabatieren, Ringe oder Uhrendeckel als Dekor eine Miniaturmalerei. Die Beliebtheit der Miniaturen war über Jahrhunderte ungebrochen. Erst als Mitte des 19. Let’s take a closer look at our snuffbox today! The decoration of its sides, executed in finest miniature painting, is dedicated to courtly spheres. The monochrome rendering of the social scenes in a park in purple camaieu contrasts charmingly with the exceptionally high-quality polychrome painting of the inner side of the lid. The groups of people depicted, captured in conversation or while making music, are quotations from the gallant world of French artists such as Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) or Nicolas Lancret (1690–1743) as well as their successors. While most of the figures cannot be clearly assigned to a graphic source, the scenery on the front side with three converging persons is clearly inspired by the print ‘Le midi’ after Lancret. I think this snuffbox is Scottish - for no more reason than it is made of pressed horn and laburnum, which was used quite a bit in Scottish furniture at the time.
