Matisse: L’Atelier Rouge is one of two temporary exhibitions that opened recently at the @fondationLV, chapter 60 of “111 Museums in Paris That You Shouldn’t Miss”. The exhibition brings the 1911 masterpiece back to Paris from @themuseumofmodernart for the first time in 30 years alongside several pieces depicted in that foundational work. Its origins and evolution are explored further in a video in which MoMA staff explain how they used modern technology to strip back the layers of L’Atelier rouge to uncover the story behind the addition of Venetian red over the majority of the painting. The exhibit also features Le Grand Intérieur Rouge (Large Red Interior), on loan from the @museedartmodernedeparis . The exhibition is on display through September. In 1725, when Sir William Blackett married Lady Barbara Villiers, this was filled with wine for a 'drink maddened crowd' who partied the night away. The family continued on this theme for Thomas Wentworth Blackett's 21st birthday on 5th Nov 1813. The family owned extensive lead mines in #Weardale and #Allendale, and the miners were provided with copious amounts of free beer for the occasion. The event became known as 'The Great Drink'. CHANA ORLOFF – Visiting Chana Orloff’s studio in Villa Seurat, a quiet artists studios' street in Montparnasse, is a moving experience. This renowned Russian Jewish sculptor emigrated to France in 1910. She was part of the vibrant artistic community in Paris, particularly in Montparnasse, where she developed her artistic career alongside many other notable artists of the time. Orloff embodies in her work a profound resilience and a palpable gentleness that appear to be drawn from her own life’s narrative. As a woman who navigated the tumultous times of the early 20th century, including war, displacement, Orloff interpreted her personal challenges into her art creating works that are both intimate and relatable. Her work touches me, stirring a sense of solidarity and admiration for the quiet power that emanates. One of the townhouses on the Place des Vosges built by Henry IV in the early 17th century houses the former apartment of the novelist and politician Victor Hugo. maisonsdevictorhugo is chapter 107 of “111 Museums in Paris That You Shouldn’t Miss.” Hugo lived in this apartment from 1832 to 1848, and the museum features several rooms of distinctly different furnishing and art representing the periods before, during and after his exile to Guernsey. A particularly flampoyant room is the Chinese room with lacquered walls, Asian ceramics, and furnishings designed by Hugo himself and used in the Hauteville II house at Guernsey. The red bedroom recreates the bedroom at avenue d’Eylau where Hugo died in 1885. On this last day of Black History Month, 2024, and the eve of the first day of Women's History month, I wanted to take the time to honor someone who deserves recognition in both of those months. Mrs. Virginia Ali, founder of Ben's Chili Bowl. Her husband Ben is in the photo on the wall, top left. Mrs. Ali has been a constant force in the community, and she attributes her notoriety and that of the iconic Ben's Chili Bowl to the golden rule: treating everyone as you would want to be treated. This has allowed her to serve everyone from United States Presidents to those suffering from drug addiction since the restaurant was founded in 1958. I am honored to have been able to interview Mrs. Ali for my book, 111 Places in Black Culture in Washington, DC that you Must Not Miss, and to celebrate an important part of D.C. history. The book will be available in bookstores on June 19, 2024 and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.
