Another striped lizard with a blue tail, but not one you see every day. The Dwarf Plated Lizard (Cordylosaurus subtesselatus) has a wide distribution from the Little Karoo through western Namibia to southern Angola, where it occurs in rocky habitats dotted with succulent vegetation. They shed their tails extremely easily, so we were thrilled to find this intact subadult. I love gerrhosaurids, and ticking another species from this African endemic family was an unexpected win. The ancient Germans celebrated the same night as Walpurgis Night - the kind of the witches' Sabbath, the night of evil spirits, during which the most famous rituals took place on Mount Brocken in honor of Hel - goddess of death. Speaking of the Mount Brocken, the name Brocken spectre is still used today, denoting an optical illusion that appears in the mountains in specific conditions and, according to superstition, means death for the person who saw it. In Slavic tribes tradition it was time of spring Dziady celebrations also referring to the spirits of dead ancestors and holiday of Vesna, goddess of youth and springtime. In numerous slavic languages the word spring is originated from Vesna - e.g. polish wiosna. Anyway, May 1 in European pagan traditions is the time of the Sun's triumph over the darkness, and I need to say this year the Sun really triumphed. In Poland, the temperature reached almost 30 degrees Celsius for the first time this year. Meet the Table Mountain Ghost Frog (Heleophryne rosei). I was not prepared for how truly alien these frogs are. Unlike other Ghost Frogs, these guys have a strange thumb-like projection on each forelimb, sport a more mottled pattern, and hypnotise with golden galaxies in their eyes. There is some evidence to suggest that these frogs should be placed in their own genus, distinct from Heleophryne. Unfortunately, the Table Mountain Ghost Frog is listed as Critically Endangered. They occur exclusively in a handful of ravines on a small section of Table Mountain, where their tadpoles have a prolonged development period in the cold, fast-flowing streams. These tadpoles may take over a year to develop into fully formed little frogs, whereafter they take up residence in damp microhabitats around the streams, such as mossy rock cracks and even hollow trees. Choking of these fragile stream habitats by damming and invasive plants has driven this range-restricted species to the brink of extinction. Clumsy hikers may also have a negative impact by disturbing rocks and sediment when crossing the streams. Fortunately, conservation efforts to protect this emblematic species have been well supported, including population monitoring and habitat restoration.

A zippy little lifer in the form of a juvenile Cape Sand Snake (Psammophis leightoni). The species occurs in three distinct forms that were, until quite recently, considered separate species. As such, this particular individual was once known as a Fork-marked Sand Snake (P. trinasalis), in lieu of the unique patterns on the head. Like all Psammophis, they are mildly venomous and extremely fast, feeding primarily on the various lizards that share their arid habitat.
