It will all be moved around a hundred times until I’m happy with it all 😂 ! Yesterday I planted my summer hanging baskets for by the front door & they are in the greenhouse to establish. I know I have already told you I love this time of year and some of the reasons why. But this has to be one of my biggest reasons and that’s uncovering my very long and winding Dahlia flower bed and boarder that’s sweeps up and around our garden hillside pathway. Last week I spent a day and half allowing them to wake up from their long winter sleep. This involved taking off the fleece and then pushing the thick layer of compost/manure over the bed which in turn will help to feed them. I then had to dig the brick edge back in and replace the bricks. The excitement grew as I spotted tiny signs of life re emerging and I started dreaming about all my beautiful colourful jewels again as that’s just how I see them. Some women love diamonds just give me a dahlia to add to my huge collection and you will have made my day. The mole hills all around the garden within the rest of my flower boarders were also uncovered ( well not really mole hills as there are more dahlias underneath those ) if you ask me how many dahlias I have and the answer is I don’t actually know but it’s in the 100s. This year I have decided to start off a cutting flower dahlia bed within my kitchen garden consisting only though of cactus and Pom Pom variety’s. I have started these off from seed and have 56 going well. Along with 8 new varieties but in tuber form these i potted up and they are in my small greenhouse. For you see I find it extremely hard to cut them they give me huge pleasure seeing them where they are. I have every hope that they will again be putting on the most amazing, dancing and colourful show very soon. 🩷💜🩷 Good morning 🩷💜🩷 I've got a tiny jar of prettiness cheering up my desk this morning, snipped from my garden yesterday. My Olivia Rose is bursting with buds but this wee flower was right down near the ground on a very bendy stem so I snipped her off before she landed face down in the mud! Wasn't it wonderful to have some sunshine yesterday 🌞 I get so much more done (and eat so much less 🤣) when the sun is out. Spent most of the day popping my dahlias into their specially built bed, moving my seedlings around to soak up as much sunshine as possible and snapping photos. Perfect day 🩷 Now - work to do! No rest for the wicked 🤣 Have a marvellous Monday folks. 🌺 PLANTS FOR SHADY AREAS 🌸 The possibilities are endless & you don’t have to have a boring shady area. For a long time I was always stuck as to what to plant that wasn’t the typical different shades of green, I love to break the rules and try different plants in these areas. First of all here’s a list of the plants I grow in my garden that will tolerate partial, light dappled & full shade ~ Rudbeckia Acer’s Bergamot Honeysuckle Busy Lizzie Acer’s Hydrangea Rhododendron Azalea Digitalis Lupins Pansies Hollyhock Achillea Calendula Carnation Petunia Strawflower Bluebells Agapanthus Aquilegia Asters Viola Bellis & many more plants. I’ve trialed & tested a lot of plants over the years and some of these plants do better in partial shade than they do in full sun, meaning you also have your blooms for longer and the colours are more vibrant than those that are in full sun as they do t have the sun bleaching the colour of the flowers. You need to make sure you choose the right plant for the area, think about what type of shade & soil you have so your plant is getting what it needs to enable it to thrive. I think it’s important to think about colours, some people make the mistake of just growing different shades of green which can make an area look too dark. I like to use yellow plants as they act as a secondary source of light but if yellows not your thing then pastel colours and also white flowers or plants with variegated leaves too which will enhance those shady areas of your garden. I have some newbie plants to the garden this year which are Astilbe, Astrantia & Viburnum which I can’t wait for these to bloom this year, my shady areas are going to be a riot of colour.
