When creating a taxidermy form from a carcass, it’s important to keep in mind that the musculature of a living animal is far more pronounced than in a deceased specimen. In the absence of blood flow muscles aren’t as prominent. As this cat is posed so it’s hunting I’ve sculpted some of the larger muscles “pumped”. Early in the sculpting process for the body of the #feralcat commission for @landcare_tasmania (minus head which is cast separately). I hand sculpt the forms of all my beasts from detailed carcass tracings and measurements and carcass photographs I take of each (if anyone ever flicked through the photos on my phone they’d be in for a shock). The process takes longer than using a commercial form but I have complete freedom regarding pose and expression which (imo) honours the uniqueness of each animal. Allowing for drying time and size each sculpt takes about 1-2 weeks. Getting ready to mould the jaws of the feral cat. This time I needed yo do both a head mould and jaw mould. The 3rd photo shows the 2 part silicone moulding material in place. And yes I know it’s easier to mould if the jaws are separated. But I always feel bad when I have to remove an animal’s head to make a mould so cutting the lower jaw off too just was never going to happen. Well this is the last meal of the feral cat I am preparing for @landcare_tasmania It’s a bird. Not a whole bird mind. But that is an entire wing swallowed whole. All the carcass measurements and drawings are complete. I’ve returned his head to the freezer so I can made a jaw mould once it’s frozen in a suitable position. I am currently waiting for the cast head to set. Then I can start hand building the armature before sculpting the body form. His body was rested on a rocky undercut on my property at home. It’s a known pathway for our resident quolls. SOLD Introducing Mossbit Taxidermy rabbit that came to me with a huge amount of moth eggs and larvae. Unfortunately the damage had been done and was too late for skin and hair, which had been used by the moths. I removed the areas affected after processing, and after investigating, there wasn't much I could do to replace it, so instead I decided to embrace it and emphasise the areas with reindeer moss. One of the paws is now completely eaten, and the skeleton remains showing; which I found a lovely surprise. I did add the moss to the paw, but to not completely obscure it. Available for purchase in condition shown, also now has been treated with taxidermy spray for a final touch to keep the moths deterred from coming back. This uni-lope is looking for a new home! SOLD . This was my first go at mounting a real pelt as taxidermy. The anatomy is off in a lot of places and the pelt was craft grade and was not really meant to be used for taxidermy. I made it work though! He had some small slipped spots behind his ears which you can’t really see unless you look for them and he came to me with a very large slip that happened during the tanning process but it’s on his wall facing side so you don’t see that at all when he’s hung up. His ears have separated from the plastic I used as liners and they have a little bit of drumming going on but not bad for my first try at mounting a pelt. . He has a cast resin horn that was molded from an original sculpt I did that is painted pink with a pearl finish. His eyes are also hand painted glass and feature rectangle pupils since I was thinking about features unicorn-jackalopes would have when I was working on him. The form inside is hand carved from foam and his limbs have wire and clay through each.
