🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 🦋 This week we discussed topics and brainstormed ideas for outreach and programming. 🌶️ We also blended our fermented veggies and taste tested our hot sauces. 💻 We zoomed Judy, our prior Cook Fresh Coordinator, who now lives in Vietnam. Thank you for waking up early to spend time with us despite the 13-hour time difference! We enjoyed hearing what you’ve been up to and talking about cultural differences, diaspora, indigeneity, traveling and food. 🎨 While zooming Judy, youth painted, folded origami, made pipe cleaner crafts, and of course we had face/eye masks for self-care. 🌱🐦‍⬛ On Saturday, we had fun engaging with community at Freeze/Thaw Fest at Lake Phalen. We led a seed sowing activity and youth who are participating in MN DNR’s Bird by Bird program led a bird-related activity. 🦅 Today, the crew went to Carpenter Nature Center for the Masters of the Sky live bird programming, where they met and learned about an African Gray Parrot, 3 varieties of Hawks, Peregrine Falcon, American Kestrel, 3 types of Owls, and a Harpy Eagle. World Bird Sanctuary from St. Louis, Missouri, put on an amazing show. 👏🏼

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 We’ve taken over winter youth shifts!!! 😁 This week we… 🦠 Learned about bacteria through taking swabs of random things around the office— we’ll see what starts to grow in the coming days! We also picked out and cut ingredients to start the fermentation process to make hot sauce. 🐟 Made a pit stop in Lake City and found some interesting things along the shorelines of Lake Pepin. 🦅 Then we visited @nationaleaglecenter to learn more about both Bald and Golden Eagles. Our interns acquired identification skills that would help them distinguish the two types of Eagles in both their juvenile and adult forms before heading out on a birdwatching tour with their binoculars in hand. Shout out to MN DNR’s Bird by Bird program for helping us organize and plan this fun field trip!

What a weekend at the Huckabee Show in Hendersonville, TN ! ( @huckabeeontbn ). Here are several production photos from our segment. It was an absolute blast being invited as a guest on a production of this magnitude. We so appreciate the hospitality of the staff, and of Governor Mike Huckabee. (PS: Awesome raptor colleague, Emily Duke, and myself made this segment look extremely easy. It is Not! In the future I'll write more about this and how our birds are able to be in this kind of setting and be outstanding representatives of their wild cousins) All photos property, and courtesy of: Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN)

It was an honor be invited by Governor Mike Huckabee ( @huckabeeontbn ) for the Huckabee Show (airing Jan 27, 2024) to be featured on his program. Governor Huckabee and staff were wonderful, and it was such a honor to be able to meet fellow guest, the one and only Gov. Sarah Palin @sarahpalin97 - who also had a blast meeting Maximus! Also, fellow guest and a super human, hero Dr. Lois Lee Children of the Night Inc. ( @childrenofthenightinc ) who rescues children for the clutches of incredible evil. (Please check out and consider supporting her efforts). So wonderful to meet @junebugcomedy, June Colson, who was outstanding in comedy. Many thanks to Emily Duke for helping. It would not have been possible without her ! Thank You! @ekduke65

Euer Markus 🇬🇧May I introduce? AHMED is an orphan and lives in Kenya. His mother died in Tsavo National Park. Ahmed stayed with his dead mother for days. The only way the little baby elephant had a chance of life was through rescue. 🚑 The Kenya Wildlife Service intervened when the rangers reported that the family had long since moved on. Ahmed found a home and a new family with other orphans at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi. Raised by elephant keepers in the sanctuary, Ahmed feels well again despite his trauma. When the time is right, the little elephant will find his way back to Tsavo where he will be gently released into the wild with other elephants. Ahmed is one of our many sponsored children, through whom we have been supporting the Kenya Wildlife Service and the work of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust since 2018, making it 5 years this year. 🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 Some outdoor shenanigans before we take a 3-week break from youth shifts. 😁 🥾🍂🌅 This week we went on “winter” adventures and enjoyed sunset hikes at Crosby Farm and Battle Creek Regional Parks. We had so much fun outside exploring in this season and watching the sunset together. 🖌️🎨 We also continued channeling our inner artists and made a lot of progress with sign painting. 😁 Just for laughs - Sometimes we have impromptu fashion shows trying on clothes donated to our youth closet. 💅🏼✨

12/15/2023, 4:57:31 PM

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 This week was super eventful and collaborative. Here’s what we did— 🖼️ Stopped by @indigeroots to see the Rooted Legacy exhibit in person. 🫶🏼 🎨 Started painting signs for some of our worksites. 👒 Had a casual day in the office working while wearing Hmong hats + mini impromptu staff photoshoot. 😆 🧹Cleaned our office,🎈Decorated, 🥘 and cooked, to prep for our first Hmong New Year celebration organized by youth. 🎉 Had a blast sharing culture, traditions, narratives, food, laughter, dance, games, and well wishes with all our peers, staff, and board members who were able to spend time with us this xyoo tshiab.

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 🪵⛄️ Earlier this week, we worked with Garden staff and interns to harvest willow for future weaving projects. We also spent creative time together making winter/holiday inspired plant pots to take home or decorate the office. 🍵🫖 Over the summer and fall, we harvested Yarrow, Bergamot, wild Thyme, Mullein root, Dandelions, and Anise Hyssop that we’ve planted and grown from seeds (with the exception of Mullein, Thyme and Dandelion). They’ve been hanging up to dry for several months, so we decided it was time to have some fun mortar and pestling our medicinal plants into a tea blend. Everyone enjoyed the aroma and taste of our trial run tea blend. It was soothing and delicious, perfect for this time of year!

We are growing! 😍🎉 Thanks to years of dedicated work and a successful 2023, we were able to acquire the neighbouring property to our Centro IDEAL in Pilar! We’re looking to start a visitor centre in our current living room, moving the common areas to the new house with an outside patio for our staff and interns to enjoy the sun ☀ The extra space will also allow us to expand our museum and open an exhibition of our collection for Pilarenses and tourists 🏛🦋 Since the house has been empty for some time, there is still lots of cleaning and renovation work to be done before we can move in but we’re excited to take on the work and have already started to clean up the garden area! 🪓🍃💪🏼 Swipe for some before/ after impressions 👉🏻 ——————————————————————————— ¡Estamos creciendo! Euer Markus 🇬🇧She is the future of a species that is on the verge of extinction. At over a year old, the little black rhinoceros is far too small. Let me introduce you: Raha. She is an orphan and was found completely starved and abandoned. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust took the baby rhino in and has been caring for it as best they can ever since. It has recovered, grown fond of its two foster fathers as a mummy substitute and is gaining weight. Raha will probably always remain smaller than her black rhino family. She is in good hands and is being professionally cared for until she can slowly get used to the wild. Follow the wilderness... this time to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. Of course, I continue to support the Trust so that I can do even more good. For example, the Sheldrick Trust also maintains the vehicles of the Kenya Wildlife Service rangers and does not give poachers a chance. 🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 🌅 We enjoyed this week’s warm weather by letting out energy, running around Thompson County Park. We watched the sunset together and it was magnificent! ✍🏼 We’ve been thinking a lot about signage for our worksites and used inspiration from our visit to the park to sketch out ideas for some painting projects this winter. 🍯 Honey bottling has begun! They can be purchased in the…nearish future. Stay tuned! 😁 🌱 Folx from the Metropolitan Council came out and facilitated engaging conversations around environmental justice. We got to share about the work we do, as well as discuss environmental policies we’d like to implement. Thanks for spending an evening with us!

11/17/2023, 11:49:00 PM

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 🦅 We had the privilege of sitting down with @shawnhayesfalconry to ask questions and have conversations about his life and pathway to falconry. We’re all so inspired by your passion for birds and conservation! Also want to shout out the MN DNR’s Bird by Bird program and @urbanbirdcollective for their collaborative efforts that allowed us to bring youth to meet Shawn and view his amazing documentary, Game Hawker (Patagonia Films). 🌿 Market Garden youth joined us for an evening to explore Frogtown Farm and Park. We shared what we found inspiring about this space and…also had fun spending a lot of energy running around, climbing, swinging, and sliding. 😁 🧹 Daylight hours are no longer on our side. We’ve been cleaning after sunset to prep our spaces for their winter hibernation. 🥾 We toured Pig’s Eye Regional Park with Katie from @greatriverpassage to learn more about St. Paul’s largest, yet most polluted park, to start dreaming about what this place could become and which communities it can serve, as the early stages of planning begins for restoration.

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 🍁🎃 We had our annual Harvest Party, where staff and interns gathered to enjoy some apple cider pressing (and tasting!), honey extraction (more tasting!), soup and bread (we just keep eating 😆). There was also arts & crafts, music & dancing, and a lot of great conversations & laughs shared. 🌱 Huge thank you to United Healthcare Volunteers who helped us weed, mulch, & plant at Rivoli. We achieved a lot with your support! 🍂🍃 Interns teamed up with Garden and community to harvest sesame seeds, as well as continued working on the multiple projects occurring simultaneously at Rivoli. 🍬 We ended our week participating in the annual community Trunk r Treat. Youth from across programs were invited to celebrate and pass out candy & veggies in their costumes. Swipe to the end if you want to see a T-Rex doing jumping jacks. 🦖🤣

Everyday we remember our founder, David Shepherd - his dedication to wildlife conservation and of course, his fantastic artistic skills. 💕🎨 But today #InternationalArtistsDay, we’d like to honour all the incredible artists we work with and all those that contribute to our vital fundraising work. Set on the birthday of Pablo Picasso (born 1881), International Artists Day reminds us that the creative spark can be expressed in so many ways – as Picasso himself was not just a painter, but also sculptor, ceramicist, poet, and playwright! So, a huge thank you to you all – we know how hard you work, adding beauty to the world around us and enabling us to put the spotlight on key environmental messages as we creatively prompt the conversation about conservation! 🐘🙌 Happy #internationalartistsday 🎉 #artist #TheArtOfSurvival #FightProtectEngage #Conservation #WildlifeConservation #EndangeredSpecies #WorkingTogether #TeamConservation #WildlifeMovement #artforconservation #teamart

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 Earlier this week, we visited Willowbrook to tackle Buckthorn and found that they were incredibly stubborn and refused to uproot. After some lopper action, interns managed to build a Buckthorn wall and…had fun tumbling through it. 😁 On Thursday, we invited Urban Roots staff and interns from across all programs to join us on a fun, outdoor adventure to the Arb. Thank you to @mn_arb for making this trip possible! We had a wonderful time exploring within the beautiful colors of autumn.

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 This week, interns spent an afternoon collecting seeds from native plants, like Mountain Mint, a variety of Milkweeds, Black-eyed Susan, and more. We found a little, fuzzy friend in one of our seed bags afterwards. Swipe to find out who we found! 😁 Later in the week, we had our annual seed cleaning event with @mnhort It’s a fun process every year, getting together to sort through what we’ve collected, and learn how to separate and prepare seeds for the next part of their journey.

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 We’re still planting! We’ve been continuously working on the hillside restoration at Rivoli with hopes to see it flourish as a community space where we can learn and forage together. We’ve also been planting at our Harvest Park location to continue growing our native plants seed garden, and have been collecting seeds in the midst of all this. Join us next Thursday, Oct. 12th from 3:30-6:30 for our seed cleaning workshop! Bring your own seeds or come help us clean ours. 😊 For more information, email David Woods at [email protected].

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 Fall youth shifts have begun! This season’s focus will be seed collection, planting, & weeding. Here’s what we’ve been working on: 🌳 We started collecting Bur and Red oak tree seeds (more varieties to come!) through a partnership with @nature_mn to help contribute toward their initiative of reforesting 1 million acres in Minnesota. 🌱 We’re hoping to plant 2,500 native trees, shrubs, flowers & grasses. We started working toward this goal by weeding and planting at our pocket park on Jessamine. This is a public, community space, so please come forage when the plants are ready! 🎉 Interns enjoyed food, hay rides, and sharing their stories at our fall fundraiser. We are so grateful to be part of this community— thank you! We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without all of you. 🫶🏼

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 We had fun meeting folx and sharing community space this past weekend at @mnwaterfest Hopefully you were able to attend & stop by to chat with our team, made a 🐸 or 🐢 crown, or took home a spinning wheel prize. Don’t worry— we also got to enjoy the event through food, exploring other booths, fishing, some weight lifting, watching performances, and even canoeing! Until next year✨

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 Shout out to our Crew Lead for delivering his first curriculum in the field! 👏🏼 Thanks for teaching the team about something you love doing. We talked about the history of fishing in Minnesota, the gifts of our waters, shared fishing (and cooking) stories, and held meaningful conversations about what sustainable fishing means to us. The crew got to do a little fishing as well. It was a good time even though luck wasn’t on our side today! #urbanrootsmn #nonprofit #minnesota #conservation #youthwork #fishing

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 Sweaty & sunshine kinda week 😁 On Tuesday, we started laying sod for a new project we’ll be working on at Battle Creek Regional Park. Today, we dug trenches in our gravel bed where the bare root trees will live until they’re ready to be given away to community members. Stay tuned for that if you’re interested in getting one for your yard!✨ #urbanrootsmn #nonprofit #minnesota #conservation #youthwork #mysaintpaul

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 Experiential & place-based learning in urban green spaces is a priority in our program. We visited @dodgenaturecenter today and shared spring memories, likes (or dislikes!), and places we enjoy visiting in this season. Then we explored the grounds while surveying the flora and fauna— there were geese, turkeys, violets, a gigantic fungi, and even a Green Heron. It was a lot of fun! 🎉

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 We’ve been busy this spring! Here’s what our last few weeks have looked like: 🪚 Continued park and trail maintenance at Willowbrook. 🏫 Visited the History Center to learn more about Mni Sóta Maḳoce & community narratives. 🎨 Painted our bike shed & beehives. We’re gearing up for summer! 🧑🏻‍🌾 Spent quality time with our friends at @wakantipi during Awakening the Garden last weekend. 🌎 Had loads of fun at the @sciencemuseummn Youth Action for Earth event! 🌳 Explored the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom (CWOC) for spring blooms & helped take out tree tubes. 🔖 Shout out to Maricella from @capitolregionwatershed for coming out to lead a handmade paper session. We appreciate you✨ 👏🏼 And lastly, welcomed our new Program Coordinator, Alex, who will be spending spring-fall with us. So glad to have you here!

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 We’re back outside — rain or shine! Here’s what the crew has been up to these past 2 weeks: 🌱 Checked in on the work we started last summer/fall at Rivoli Bluff Farm and Restoration Site to see how they’re doing. 🦉 Dissected owl pellets and discovered what our friends have been eating — rodents, lots of rodents! 🌿 Transplanted native plants that’ll be available for purchase soon. 🎨 We learned about the ways public art impacts and changes community and painted our own pieces to contribute to a future mural. Thanks for inviting us to your home/studio and sharing your artwork and career journey! @kaoleethao 🦫🌳 Took out tree tubes, continued our tree tagging project, explored in the rain, and saw how busy beavers have been at Willowbrook! #NativePlants #PublicArt

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 Despite only catching one fish, we had a fun time out on the lake trying our hand at ice fishing this past weekend. Shout out to @leadoutmn for educating youth about the importance of using lead free tackle. They’re excited to use the tackle you all gave them! Thanks @urbaniceanglers for lending ice fishing poles to help make this program possible!

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 Youth across all programs got a taste of Conservation through a charcuterie board inspired by edible plants we work with during restoration projects. They sampled braised burdock roots, elderberry, rose hips, and stinging nettle tea, raw pine nuts and hazelnuts, local-made honey and maple syrup, and even bee pollen! The crew had fun tasting many flavors beyond these, doing some self-care with face masks, creating mini terrariums, food color painting in the snow and much more— well deserved variety of festivities following finals. 👏🏼

🌿 #TeamConservation Updates🌿 This week, interns challenged their creativity through experimenting with various art mediums, such as assemblage with plants pressed from prior seasons, painting, and drawing, to create nature inspired cards. Check out their awesome designs! 👏🏼
