MADRID - Thursday, March 7, 2024 Part 3 of 3 It was almost 4 pm and drizzling when we’d had enough of Reina Sophia. And we were starving. The Atocha train station is across the street and I really wanted to see this huge glass and wrought iron building. We walked through the drizzle and since it’s under renovation, we entered through the side. There’s an enormous palm garden inside, but the huge glass front is covered in scaffolding and the jackhammers never stopped - but we were so hungry we split a cheese sandwich and a bowl of olives and just looked at each other and laughed. (There used to be a turtle pond in the center of the palm garden, but folks kept abandoning their pet turtles and other fish in the pond so they had to make arrangements with a rescue group to look after them and moved over 300 turtles to a refuge and filled in the pond!) Took a taxi back to the hotel to refresh. I put my rain hat on and set out for pastry to bring back to the room, then took a 15 minute disco nap. The funny thing about Madrid is how LATE folks eat dinner, some restaurants don’t even open until after 7 pm. We found a Moroccan restaurant in our neighborhood which had a glorious interior and other than two fat fellows on the other side of the room, licking their fingers, we were the only ones there. (Eventually other tables filled) What I’ve been missing in Madrid is VEGETABLES. I’m craving salad. We ordered tabouli, hummus, and a salad. The server brought the tabouli - delicious! Then he brought the hummus - also delicious! And we waited and waited…no salad. After a long while we decided we’d had enough food, so we finished our wine and got the check. No salad for me. Good thing I get half an avocado every morning with breakfast, right?! #sallyandamyworldtourMADRID #thatsallfortoday
MADRID - Wednesday March 6, 2024 Part 4 of 4 The Alba family has been powerful in Spain since forever - they’ve amassed wealth and art since forever - Goya painted the portrait of the Duchess of Alba. They built the Palacio de Liria in the 1700s but there was a fire in the 1940s or 50s so the palace is VERY restored. (luckily most of their priceless art was at the Prado or other palaces, so they didn’t lose it to the fire) They only let 15 people in at a time and you are required to be with a guide (who spoke no English). We got the audio guide and the actual guide would do a flight attendant impersonation pointing out the paintings as the audio guide gave us excruciating detail. The whole thing was a bit painful - especially when the guide would go rogue - stopping the audio and talk in our ears for a while IN SPANISH. The upside is, the palace is very elegant and chock full of Velazquez, El Greco, Rubens, Rembrandt, Goya, and even Titian!!! The library has a beautifully illuminated bible - the first bible translated into Spanish, as well as a big collection of papers from Christopher Columbus and hand drawn maps of the new world. Afterwards we walked allllll the way back to the hotel to relax a bit - it was after 6 pm and we’d been walking pretty much non-stop since 10 am. (Which is all part of the adventure) This evening - after we’d recharged for a bit - we walked over to the Palacio de Comunicaciones - a VERY ornate former turn of the century post office that is now Madrid’s city hall. There’s a rooftop bar with views over the fountain at Cibeles (some chick riding in a carriage pulled by two lions). I have enjoyed a few Malayalam movies from Kerala and praised their actors for playing convincing roles. It has always been an impressive experience when it comes to storyline, acting and direction. But recently, under the spotlight from different locations of the world thanks to OTTs, the Kerala movie industry lost its charm. It has been many years since I last watched a movie and these days, I just chill out on @netflix with my list of animes. Yesterday I watched @2018.themovie with my husband on @sonylivindia after quite the hype on social media as we couldn’t catch it in a theatre. It was about the 2018 Kerala floods that ravaged the state and how the people united despite the adversity and managed to make it through such difficult experiences. But the focus was lesser on the story, characters or acting and more on the crores worth of visual effect and ominous music. @tovinothomas seems to have typecasted himself into characters that don't need to be a tropey hero so they almost always die in the end to remove the so called glamour but ends up enhancing the trope more. This is probably his 3rd or 4th movie where he plays such predictable characters. 🙄 it seems like he wants to be a hero without being one and ends up as one. The acting was alright, editing was bad, music was a little loud and visual effects were worth the money. I think they captured pretty realistic flood scenes and that part did impress me. Overall, I will give it 4/10 for visual effects and somewhat acting. As there was literally no story or character development, most points are deducted for that. They say knowledge is power. But i wouldn’t feel as powerful if i didn’t feel like i had physical strength as well. There’s been many times in the emergency department that my knowledge wasn’t needed but my strength was.. whether it was to pick a patient off the floor, give appropriate CPR on a large individual, roll a heavy patient, defend myself while being attacked.. all my knowledge meant nothing during those times. My strength has given me confidence… in myself and my abilities. I owe everything to what lifting weights has given me. It’s built me, it’s protected me, and it’s uplifted me. I just wish more people felt what I feel. Idc your starting point, i don’t care how uncomfortable you are, and I definitely don’t care how embarrassed you may feel. Just start. #ThatsAllForToday
