There are so many beautiful recipes including saffron, but the absolute staple is saffron rice. Did anyone else grow up with that big burlap sack of Basmati somewhere near their kitchen? Years ago my grandmother gave me a rice cooker that has gotten me through college, apartments, houses, multiple moves, and it’s still going strong. I love using it because it gives me perfect rice (and other grains) every time, but also some part of her is there making dinner with me. SUNDAY SONGS • “Ik heb héél veel zin in wijn”, riep ik vrijdag vroeg in de avond toen ik de deur en het weekend opende voor Kerstin. Ons voorgenomen sportplan paste niet in de dag, of, nou ja, vooral niet in míjn dag. De stuiverwissel naar knoflookspaghetti en wijn slurpen is dan zo gemaakt. Ergens in mijn culinaire tijdbalk is mijn pasta-traditie als een ongeplande estafette overgenomen door Svenmyman. Daarmee zijn de champignons als bijlage uit het menu geëlimineerd en krijg ik er salade met burrata voor terug en ook vaak gasten aan tafel. Maar vooral die kokende man op vrijdag en dat is een zegening die ik elke week weer kwadrateer. Damast-mes (van zijn hand) slijpen, de geur van knoflook die minstens 24 uur in huis en om ons heen blijft hangen en altijd een goeie wijn in de koelkast, ditmaal eentje van mijn kaasbuurtjes op Geerstraat 3 (DomPeynac Reserve chardonnay, voor wie ook van boterige, diepgele, droge witte wijn houdt). Het weekend was welkom. De werkmodus uitzetten blijft mijn grootste uitdaging, want er is altijd wel wat moois te maken en de administratie houdt nooit op. En toch is al het jarigs op zaterdag gevierd. Wijntje bij jobje Monique en vervolgens door naar ’t Kroegje voor een biertje op de koning en de kick van het voorbijtrekkende muziekkorps KTK. Met vrolijkheid in de achterzak op tijd naar huis. Soep. Broodje. Bank. Bed. Tot dwars door de kerkklokken. Ik leer het wel, dat weekend vieren... . Vandaag even wat rammelarij in de playlist, want altijd maar die singer-songwriter folky toestand. Interpol komt naar Nederland en ik had even lichte twijfel of ik kaartjes zou regelen, maar het is wel even prima allemaal, er staat nog genoeg in de agenda. Today I wrote my final @tallahasseememorial Rehabilitation Center white board! I have my last shift with TMRC this week and before I left for Jacksonville I knew I had to update our white board one last time. It was fun to get to look back on some of the designs I’ve done (greatly inspired by scrolling on Pinterest) and remember all the good times I’ve had in my last 2.5 years working here! A special shout out to one of my all time favorite coworkers who both inspired (re:told 😂) me to start updating our white board as well as bought me a pack of colored expo markers so I could make our signs extra pretty!

I am lucky to have a collection of old cast iron skillets, mostly gifted and thrifted, with incredible seasoning built over decades of use by people who are long gone. However it’s not just the seasoning that makes them great, it was the smoothing process after they were cast in sand that took away their rough surface. That doesn’t happen anymore. During 2020 I made a project out of this newer pan and sanded it down to a (nearly) mirror finish, then built the seasoning back up from bare iron. I did have a couple “oh shit, what have I done?” moments, but it’s a trust the process sort of thing. It’s taken hours of polymerization in the oven and years of cooking to get it to the point where it is my go-to breakfast pan, she’s pretty slick. What I didn’t anticipate about this process is how much I needed to learn not only about “editing” cast iron, but how to better maintain the precious old pieces that I already have. If you’re thinking about taking the plunge and getting crafty with some sort of power tool, do it! Everything will be ok. For my first attempt, I decided to replicate what I consider the simplest work: the 'Spiral Cake,' primarily made up of drills (I learned this name today from dear @mirandasonger I am grateful to her. 🧡) This way, it provided me with a great opportunity for practice. Swipe to zoom 🔎 What do you think of this impossible number 1? ✨For this edition of the 36 Days of Type, I've chosen a space themed term that involves each number as inspiration for it's design! Today's term for number 1 is First Light! As much of a moon lover as I am, I also am quite obsessed with sunset and sunrise. So I decided to let that beautiful moment of dawn inspire my number 1! ✨Honestly the number one is kind of boring since it's mostly just a straight line 😂 So I wanted to go a little outside of the box and created this impossible style diamond shape to serve as my 1! I used a dark purple to light pink gradient to represent the gorgeous colors in the sky as the light breaks through the darkness. I also added these chromatic rays onto the background to represent the suns rays peeking over the horizon. ✨ What do you think of my take on number 1? Un film che amo molto dice «quando soffri di insonnia non sei mai realmente addormentato e non sei mai realmente sveglio». E secondo me il protagonista di Fight Club aveva proprio ragione. Quando soffro di insonnia la sensazione che ho io è come di guardare attraverso un vetro satinato: tutti i contorni attorno a me sono confusi e i miei sensi perdono lucidità, in compenso però i nervi sono scoperti e pronti a irrigidirsi al minimo raggio di luce. . Nelle ultime settimane mi è venuta a trovare questa vecchia conoscenza che periodicamente si fa viva, soprattutto in estate. Arriva come un'ospite scomoda e inattesa, e se resta molti giorni alla fine logora l'umore e contamina la percezione di ogni cosa. Non ho mai avuto un rapporto facile e lineare col sonno, ma stavolta sono passata attraverso uno dei periodi di insonnia più lunghi da che ne ho memoria, e alla fine ha vinto lei. Ora il problema sembra arginato, ma mi ha lasciato in regalo un po' di febbre e una manciata di afte nervose in bocca. E in tutto questo il mio letto milanese mi manca terribilmente.
L'estate è già cominciata da un po', soprattutto la mia, quindi è anche ora di iniziare a farvi vedere lei, la mia Ragazza Estate 🐚
Sono giorni di testa strapiena di progetti da far sbocciare e a volte non è semplice stare dietro a tutto ciò che vorrei mostrarvi e raccontarvi, forse perché io per prima fatico a starmi al passo e sento che se rallento un attimo - anche solo per fare un post o una foto in più - potrei perdere il ritmo. E a proposito di cose che sbocciano in testa, se avete visto le mie stories di oggi saprete già che ho lavorato alla mia ragazza Primavera: nel frattempo la corona di fiori è terminata, ma ho deciso di tenervi ancora un po' sulle spine.. giusto per allungare la lista di cose arretrate da farvi vedere! Scherzi a parte, so già perfettamente come finirla, ma sto ragionando su fin dove spingermi a disegnare sull'originale che poi sarà in vendita e quanto lavorare di grafica per la versione digitale delle stampe. Non escludo di lasciarla molto minimale nella sua forma cartacea e sbizzarrirmi con Photoshop.
