As part of the recent @atypi_org conference in Brisbane, @typism hosted a retrospective poster exhibition celebrating 10 years of their Typism books. 36 pieces were selected for the posters and I was honoured to be included amongst some incredible lettering artists. My ‘F’ design was originally created for @36daysoftype as a guest artist entry, and later featured in Typism book 8. Arimado is my interpretation of a neo-grotesk with geometric and humanist tinges. I was enthralled by some of the newer interpretations of the genre, and decided to reference several of those items. Infuse that with whatever I liked and one thing led into another. Features included the triangular characters “A”, “V” having aesthetic traps, narrow joins for the “n”, “b”, “d” and of course, not being too “engineered” to give it that more organic feel. As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to share my story to help raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health… I first experienced feelings of anxiety in my teens. It started with subtle symptoms like feeling sick in the pit of my stomach or excessive sweating in social situations. However, it eventually grew into something much more severe when I was in my early 20s. I would often experience feelings of panic and stress days or even weeks before a big occasion. My anxiety affected my life on a day-to-day basis, especially when I had to take public transport to get to work or events. I would often feel a crippling sensation that stopped me from boarding buses or tubes, which meant I would often turn around halfway and go back home or arrive hours late. While I was lucky to have understanding employers, friends and family who allowed me extra time and took the pressure off me, not everyone has that kind of support. Friends, family, and employers may not understand what you’re going through or offer any help. Eventually, in my mid-20s, I decided to seek professional help. Thanks to Greenwich Time to Talk, I received the therapy needed to learn to live with my anxiety and not let it affect me every day. Although I still have feelings of anxiety, and it does affect my life today, it has become a lot easier for me to manage since I had therapy. If you’re feeling anxious or experiencing panic and it’s stopping you from achieving what you want to achieve or doing the things you want to do in life, I highly recommend seeking professional help. Reach out and be honest with those around you. Remember, people can be a lot more understanding than you may think. Mental health issues are nothing to be ashamed of, and it’s okay to seek help. N140 “reminding” “The more I peer into the darkness, the brighter life gets, the quieter the world becomes, and the less unconscious resistance I feel to, well, anything.” The Book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” by Mark Manson. I rarely read this kind of literature, but according to the rules of the challenge, I had to read this book. First of all, I am grateful to the author for his straightforwardness, the lack of roundabout thoughts on the page, and secondly, for the questions that are important and useful for me in one way or another. I spent an indecently long time reading this book, precisely because it touched upon my feelings and thoughts that I really didn’t want to bring to the surface. Am I ready to fight for my goals? Will I have enough brains and will to get rid of the garbage that hinders me? What are my values? Do I even have any?
