We also went to FAO Schwarz & of course, Build-A-Bear/Friends 2b Made on Fifth Avenue. Then we visited The Plaza where Eloise lives. More character art fun from The Lion King, celebrating the film’s 30th Anniversary. As I’ve described in previous posts, much of the custom character art we developed at The Disney Store was designed in layout for application to specific products. We were doing a lot of embroidered apparel for kids AND adults in those days. Shown here is a vertical layout for application to the placket of a henley tee-shirt. I always enjoy seeing the rough concepts, often marked up with comments from one of our Character Art Managers. You gain an appreciation of the creative process for the character artists developing what are essentially one-panel comics. The concept needs to tell a story AND be funny! Or evoke some other positive emotional reaction from the store’s “guests.” (Disney terminology for customers!) The Character Artists have to understand the personalities of each character, establish what action is occurring, how do the characters interact with each other? This rough sketch plays on the large and weird assortment of bugs that make-up Pumba and Timon’s diet, and then young Simba’s reaction to the idea of eating bugs. The notes or feedback to the character artist are intended to guide changes to improve the concept: “(You need) different sized & shaped bugs.” “(Show) Simba really reacting to bugs!” “Pumba (should) look up more.” “(Make them) Big Bad Bugs!” All of this work is done with a positive collaborative approach. It’s never to criticize the character artists’ work but to improve and make the concepts as strong and funny as possible. Alice in Wonderland, the whimsical and enchanting animated film, was released in 1951 by Walt Disney Productions and distributed by RKO Radio Pictures. It draws inspiration from Lewis Carroll's timeless literary works: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass (1871). Initially conceived in the 1930s, the idea of adapting Alice into a feature-length animated film was shelved in favor of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The film concept was revived in the 1940s, following the critical and box office success of Snow White. Ultimately, Alice in Wonderland became a fully animated feature film. The film follows a young Alice who falls down a mysterious rabbit hole to enter the fantastic world of Wonderland. This nonsensical land is ruled by the Queen of Hearts, while Alice encounters many funny and strange characters, including Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and others. An amazingly talented female background artist at the studio, Mary Blair submitted some concept drawings for Alice in Wonderland. Blair's paintings incorporated an incredibly fresh and modernist style, using bold, unreal colors, stark shapes, and fluid forms. Walt saw the promise of Blair's stunning design direction and had the script re-written to focus on comedy, music, and the whimsical side of Carroll's books. The film premiered on July 26, 1951. Initially considered a disappointment, it gained popularity during its 1974 re-release, and is now regarded as one of Disney's best-animated films. At The Disney Store, we frequently made use of the Alice in Wonderland characters and story for new merchandise for kids and adults. Continuing our celebration of Disney’s The Little Mermaid 35th Anniversary. Its original theatrical release was November 17, 1989 from Walt Disney Feature Animation. The film received critical acclaim for its animation, music, and characters. It was a huge commercial success at that time, earning $84 million at the domestic box office during its initial release and a total lifetime gross of $235 million worldwide. These numbers do NOT include the consumer products merchandising revenue, which was also big hit with audiences. Along with other successful Disney films like The Great Mouse Detective and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid is credited with revitalizing Disney's animated feature films after a period of struggle and set-off what is considered Disney’s second “Animation Renaissance.” The film is loosely based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The film was written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and produced by Musker and Howard Ashman, who also wrote the film's songs with Alan Menken. Menken also composed the film's score. This larger panel character art with background shown here, was developed by the in-house creative team at The Disney Store. I don’t remember it’s final application but these kinds of illustrations were typically done for housewares, like children’s melamine plates or beach towels. The film is still a favorite of Disney fans and the supporting products continue to sell. Happy Collegiate Basketball Season! Disney standard characters (Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto and Goofy) are very popular and the range of stories and activities that they can perform is virtually unlimited. At the Disney Store, our brand creative team (and freelance outside artists) were constantly developing and drawing an on-going stream of new character art gags and creative concepts to fill the demands of new products in our merchandising pipeline. Sports of practically every variety were illustrated and Goofy is famous for his slapstick “goofs” on the field and on the court. Shown today is a funny gag with Goofy stuck upside down in a basketball net. For those with an interest in classical hand-drawn animation, you will notice the unusual three-hole punch down the right side of the full sheet, shown in second image. This is based on the Acme system of metal pegs a standard in Hollywood animation studios since the early 1900’s. Originally invented in Germany the system uses a couple of different variations of equally spaced and alternating round and flat metal pegs that correspond to pre-punched holes in the animator’s drawing paper. The extra space at either end of the slot allows the paper to be lifted easily without tearing the holes. The Disney Studio created their own preferred version of size and spacing of these pegs, which allowed for proper registration across multiple animation drawings. Took a trip down memory lane last night when I discovered my pink caboodle (purple handle) in the cupboard above the washer and dryer. Pins from before the days of pin trading. There is a lot of discussion in the news and social media about post-apocalyptical AI becoming a threat to humankind. I prefer the kinder and peaceful Pixar version of that narrative as told in the story of WALL-E, both the character himself and the film. I’m talking, of course, about the 2008 American animated science fiction film "WALL-E" produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Andrew Stanton with a screenplay by Andrew Stanton and Jim Reardon, the film had a very lengthy development process but at release, became an instant classic, blending environmental themes with Pixar's signature emotional depth. The film is set in the distant future, where Earth has become uninhabitable due to excessive garbage. The last remaining robot, WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class), is left to clean up the planet. WALL-E is curious, inquisitive, and a little lonely. One day, he encounters a sleek robot named EVE (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator) sent from the starship Axiom. WALL-E falls in love with EVE and embarks on a galactic adventure to follow her across the galaxy. The mix of themes in this story is incredibly powerful. To begin with, WALL-E’s connection with EVE demonstrates the importance of companionship, love, and shared experiences. Despite the bleak setting, WALL-E remains hopeful and determined. Continuing our celebration of The Lion King 30th Anniversary. We did a very high-volume of Lion King merchandise at The Disney store for several years after the film’s release. Our merchants would track sales of items and continually evaluate which characters emerged as the most popular. Therefore, we needed to continually develop new creative concepts for our evolving merchandise assortment. The delightful duo of Timon and Pumbaa turned out to be a big surprise hit with our customers. In a story I heard from Don Hahn, the producer of The Lion King, that while in initial casting for the film they were having trouble identifying the right voice talent for Timon and Pumbaa. Apparently, Nathan Lane received an audition call for a new Disney film titled “King of the Jungle” to play some crazy villainous hyenas. Curious and a bit skeptical, Nathan invited Ernie Sabella (whom he had previously appeared with on Broadway in the musical comedy “Guys & Dolls”) to accompany him to the audition. Inside the recording booth, Lane suggested that Sabella join him. Having someone to play off of during the dialogue scene seemed like a good idea. As two naturally funny guys, they went off-script, goofing around and improvising. Don and the film's directors, Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, were knocked out by their unexpected humor and high-energy chemistry.
