SPOTLIGHT by @otimo_archive Sergio Larraín Sergio Larraín Echeñique (1931-2012) was a truly extraordinary photographer, a master of light who found fleeting moments of beauty within everyday life. Born in Santiago, Larrain’s early photographic output often depicted street children on the streets of the Chilean capital. In 1958, he travelled to London to photograph the city for the British Council and later moved to Paris after Henri Cartier-Bresson invited him to join the Magnum agency. In the early 1960s, he returned to Chile and began his seminal project on the city of Valparaiso, which was published in the eponymous photo book in the early 1990s. However, at the end of the 1960s, following an encounter with Bolivian mystic Oscar Ichazo, he abandoned his camera completely, moving to the remote Chilean countryside and dedicating himself to a reclusive life of meditative and spiritual practice. SPOTLIGHT by @otimo_archive Tina Modotti Workers Parade, 1926 Though born in Italy, it is Mexico with which Tina Modotti (1896–1942) is most synonymous. The photographer relocated to the country from the US in 1923 with her mentor and lover Edward Weston, the pair establishing a studio and immersing themselves in political and cultural circles with influential figures like Leon Trotsky, Frida Kahlo, and Diego Rivera. While Modotti also trained her lens on the country’s industrial and natural landscapes, resulting in striking, almost abstract images that display her distinct modernist language, it is her portrayals with more humanist themes that remain most memorable (such as this striking image). Her depictions of Mexico’s working classes and symbols of their movements not only showcase her artistry but also reflect the principled leftist beliefs that ultimately led to her exile in 1930. #thentherewasus #otimoarchive

With Sorrow Is All The Pain of Love, Oliver Raschka reveals a deeper psychogram based on an unintentional and unconscious documentation of various states of mind. All photographs are from the archive (2010-2024). By using photographs that he took unintentionally and unconsciously, he gain authentic and deep access to what he really concerns. The work provides insights into how negative feelings, burnout, mental or physical injuries can manifest photographically.
