We were VERY busy for Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month! Ethan and I presented to SIX different grades this year! We have been going into our school district every year in April and presenting to students since he was in kindergarten. He’s now in 7th grade! Every year our presentation grows and Ethan gets more comfortable participating. This year we had the privilege to speak to kindergarten, first, second, third, seventh and eighth grade. We created a brand new presentation for the seventh and graders based off of questions they answered on a questionnaire we sent out earlier in the month. I loved talking with the middle schoolers because those are Ethan’s peers currently. And Ethan’s twin brother gets to join us for those and answer questions from a sibling perspective at the end! I am so incredibly proud of these boys. Another very successful Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month in the books!

April is Autism Acceptance Month, and this month is a very important time of the year for me. I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at age 3. For my entire life, I’ve struggled to concentrate and interact with other people, even to this day. I was often misunderstood for my words, actions, expressions, and body language. I fell in denial at age 12 due to being bullied by my peers and underestimated by faculty. It wasn’t until halfway through college at age 22 when I finally learned to love and ACCEPT myself for who I am. It lifted a huge weight off of my shoulders, and I’ve never felt so refreshed. Going to public university has exposed me to the joys of neurodiversity like I’ve never seen before. It made me realize how different autism truly is for everyone who has it. Some of us have more support needs than others to live the lives that we want to lead. Times have changed for the better. ✨PURE HAPPINESS✨ I don’t know if any of you knew this about me or not, but I LOVE snakes!!! More specifically, ball pythons like the one pictured here. Snakes in general are actually a special interest of mine too!! We went to a reptile & exotics expo today!! The point of going there was to pick up my sister’s future class pet, a hedgehog named Sable. And she’s adorable too of course, but I was just so ecstatic to get to hold some snakes again!! Especially ball pythons. Because I hadn’t held one of them since middle school lol. My dream is to someday be able to own a ball python of my own. I spent my whole life not knowing I was autistic–because accurate autistic representation is severely lacking. It was only when I started hearing stories of other late-diagnosed autistic women that I began to wonder. It’s pretty common for us to diminish our own experiences, especially if our experiences seem “normal” to us. But knowing I’m autistic, and embracing it, and looking after my sensory needs, has had such an enormous impact on my life. And I don’t see why society views us as a deficit; something to be fixed, or hidden. Disability is a natural part of human life. We need to see more diverse stories represented–not just women, but LGBTQIA+ people and people of colour. Hello to you, I was late diagnosed as AUTISTIC in 2023 when I was 61-years-old. I am now 62. I have documented my journey on here since turning over my Instagram page to all things AUTISTIC. Although my page goes way back to 2013 my first autism post was dated 8 May 2022. Since then I have shared my thoughts, my fears, my opinions, the process leading up to my NHS autism diagnosis, the diagnostic experience itself and the sometimes painful deconstruction of my lived experience following it and which is still ongoing. My posts are often quite lengthy and meandering but I put my heart and soul into them. Unfortunately they seldom get much traffic and only a smattering of likes. “Intensely preoccupied with the movement of the spinning coin or lid, I saw nothing or heard nothing. People around me were transparent, and no sound intruded on my fixation. It was as if I was deaf. Even a sudden loud noise didn’t startle me from my world. But when I was in the world of people, I was extremely sensitive to noise” - Grandin and Scariano 1986. Temple Grandin did not speak until she was three and a half years old. In her autobiography, she explained her coping strategy for being overwhelmed by sensory and social experiences as a very young child. She used repetitive behaviour or ‘stimming’ to effectively ‘block’ such events. This behaviour reduced her auditory and visual sensitivity and the effects of social intrusion on her enjoyment of solitude. Non-speaking autistic children often use this behaviour as a coping strategy. When such actions occur, they indicate the need for environmental rather than behavioural modification. Autistic April Day 29: Accessibility I think it's very important to make as many venues as accessible to disabled people as possible because it isn't fun missing out on things because they arn't accessible. I miss being able to do things that I used to be able to do but can no longer do because my Agoraphobia has gotten bad. However if some places became more accessible to me I would be able to do those things again. One thing I miss is being able to travel but unfortunately airports arnt accessible to me so I can't fly even though I am fine on planes. I believe the sunflower lanyard is great when helping people with airports and I think that all staff at every airport in the world should learn about what the sunflower lanyard means and how to help disabled passengers. I have also seen pictures of quiet areas set up in different airports which is fantastic. I think these should be in every airport. I also think there should be an alternative way of going through Airport security for some passengers because airport security is what myself and many other people struggle with. I would prefer to take the option if I could get strip searched by a female guard in a private room instead of having a panic attack and breaching airport security again. I understand that we have to keep our airports and planes safe and that option should be available. Listening to the autistic community and using preferred language is what it means to be neuro affirming. Of course some autistic people have grown up with and may prefer person first language (ie. person with autism) and that is their prerogative completely. It is preferable in the autistic community to use identity first language (autistic person) due to autism being an intrinsic part of a persons genetic make up. Autism is not something that can be detached from a person, nor should there ever be an implication to detach it!
