WEB / I Spider ウェブ / 妖獣 （1970 UK） Design: #PicturePost ヴィブラフォンが陰鬱な印象を与えるジャズ風味のプログレッシヴ・ロック名盤。 インパクトが大きいジャケット・デザインは前回のBRAINCHILDと同じPicture Post。PolydorとA&Mとレコード会社やマネージメント会社も異なり、メンバーの交流もない。BRAINCHILDの発売月は分からないが、こちらは11月なのでWEBの関係者がBRAINCHILDのジャケットを見て発注をした可能性がある。Picture Postはこれら2枚以外のアルバムデザインを担当した記録がないので、このようなモンタージュを得意としたデザイナーまたはアーティストなのかもしれない。 見開きジャケットの外面にはキウイ（鳥）と鳥の頭の形の指を作ったヒトの手のモンタージュ。2匹の4ツ足動物とヒトの手のモンタージュ。これら3匹の“妖獣”は無造作に水平線の背景に置かれている。よく見るとジャケット裏の1匹は水平線が透過している。何か適当。“妖獣”の境界にボケた黒い輪郭が残っているのは動物の毛を上手に切り抜けないからだろう。これは現在Photoshopで加工したとしても手間がかかる。グループ名「蜘蛛の巣」、タイトル「私は蜘蛛」。そしてこのアートワーク。まったく関係ない。 後にDEEP PURPLEに参加するIan GillanとRoger Gloverが在籍していたEPISODE 6。イギリスのジャズ・ミュージシャンStan Traceyにピアノを師事したDave Lawsonも在籍していた。EPISODE 6がTHE WEBとステージを共にすることがあり、ちょうどヴォーカルのJohn L. Watsonがソロ活動を始めるため脱退し、バンドも新たな展開を模索している時期でありその縁で引き抜かれた。このWEBの3作目では全曲の作詞作曲とメインヴォーカルをDaveが行っているためDaveがグループをリードし方向性まで決めたように思われるがDaveの意志ではなかったという。 Instagramに登録されている音源はなし。 This is a acclaimed progressive rock album with a somber, jazz-influenced sound accentuated by the melancholic vibraphone. The impactful album artwork is once again handled by the design company Picture Post, although the record label (Polydor), management, and band members are different from the previous BRAINCHILD release. The release month for this album is November, so it’s possible the BRAINCHILD artwork caught the attention of those involved and inspired the commission. The front cover features a surreal composition of a kiwi (the bird), a bird-headed humanoid hand, and two quadrupedal “cryptid” creatures laid out against a hazy horizon. This band, EPISODE 6, featured Ian Gillan and Roger Glover before they joined DEEP PURPLE, as well as Dave Lawson, who had studied piano under British jazz musician Stan Tracey. EPISODE 6 had shared the stage with THE WEB, and it was during a period when their vocalist John L.
