Had a conversation about punk rock with a friend recently and have to get this off my chest. TL;DR you better thank Black women & femmes for this entire genre!!!! Anyways, we talked on the merits/radical politics of authentic punk rock versus the self described “punks” who maybe dye their hair green and get a bunch of tattoos, listen to the Sex Pistols (🤢), and ultimately don’t care to engage with politics or act on injustice because their inherent privilege means that they can opt out of being impacted from any oppression in society… like I know that last point describes soooo many (usually white) apathetic people, but I want to narrow the focus and call in the folks essentially cosplaying as punk rockers and “punk princesses” because their ignorant worldviews run rampant both online & offline in the music scene and it’s a major eye roll. So to be clear: Punk rock means giving a $*€% about the world around you & wanting to change things. It’s recognizing that this genre actually comes from the labour and talent of Black women who sang about social and racial injustice; it’s a musical call to arms for rebels willing to fight for human rights, not for those who Tweet about how sad they are that the queen died (aka your punk idol Johnny Rotten 🤮). Punk is anti-colonial and anti-racist, and it sure as hell isn’t defined by how you dress; it’s more than music in that it’s an attitude and lives in how you treat people and how you fight to change our material conditions for the better. THIS WAS THE BLUEPRINT OF PUNK ROCK PALS - just look at the actual OGs- not the the Vivienne Westwood wannabes 🥴- but the incredibly talented Poly Styrene, Rosetta Tharpe & more - all who sang about patriarchy, exploitation, racial capitalism, & the list goes on! PUNK IS REALIZING THAT THE ACTIVE WHITEWASHING OF HISTORY HAS ERASED RACIALIZED VOICES FROM ITS ORIGINS - and that we must honour their legacy and support current BIPOC punks too! … If you mourned the queen you ARENT PUNK!!! Tour is over and what a crazy trip it was.🫠 19 shows in 20 days across the US (1 in Canada). Over 8,000 miles driven. Saw so many friends and made some new friends along the way. Ate some great food and some not so great food. Made some spectacular drives (PNW) and some less than spectacular drives (Kansas. Do we even need Kansas?). I came down with something in Akron OH and got so sick I thought I might miss several shows but fortunately pulled through (shout-out to Mucinex DM). We played a lot of incredible shows and had an amazing trip! I couldn't have asked for better company to spend 3 weeks on the road with. So grateful for my bandmates and friends, road warriors and sonic accomplices, Audrey, Thomas, and Jordan @pleasurevenom .
